DFS only replicating one way

Just set up DFS in test environment but it will only replicate one way. It sometimes does but not reliably.

From Server 1 --> server 2. Files are updated and modified almost instantly

From Server 2 --> Server 1 I did see some updates happen but on the whole it doesn't sync. Not to the point that is not going to cause issues in a production environment

No errors in event log to point me in the right direction

The only clue i have is that there are backlogged transactions that never clear on server 2

Check dfs management to make sure there are two connections. from each system to the other.

does the DFS event log indicate the connection to the other is failing. i.e. it can not connect RPC error, or no path.

What is the replication schedule on each connection, staging area, bandwidth??

Arnold,

Thanks for chiming in. There are connectors going in each direction. I don't have a single log entry in the DFS replication event log. We have 10MB site 2 site link between Malaysia and Baku. The staging area is set to default however at this stage I'm just trying to verify all works with just a handful of text files. Nothing bigger than 50KB. Overnight it seems to have sorted it self out however it makes me nervous when these systems seem to need time to get it together. I'm still not 100% satisfied with how it is working. From Server1 --> Server 2 it is almost instant. I mean within 2-3 seconds the change is reflected. However the other direction seems to take closer to 10 seconds

MCurrently we are hosting all of Bakus data in Malaysia. We have now deployed a local server for F&P I plan to use DFS to replicate the data accross. initially Malaysia will be the primary. Once its fuly synched I will then point all Baku users to the DFS share. Then Baku really will be the primary although users will still access data from Malaysia when using our roaming VPN. We will only back up in Malaysia so it is important that synch is working

thanks for your comments again

Check, scheduling on dfs-replication.
It sounds as though the scheduler lets replication occur overnight.

Do you monitor the link use. Look at the stats to gauge when utilization kicks up.

You may have schedule for one direction to be 24hours, while the other is set to a time ....

If they are synced, you could try to use dfs management to test.

Check the topology you defined for the replication group.

I have checked the sheduler and it is set to default which is all the time. the fact that it is now replicating both ways within 10 seconds confirms that

When u say link do you mean the site 2 site link utilisation?

Sheduler is all fine, have checked

Im really not getting confident in using this, i can see production issues occuring as it just seems to be eratic.

Just now i tried to create another namesapce. I server i was creating it on is the namespace server. I then attempted to add the foreign server and i get inconsistent errors. If i persist trying it eventually works

First error was verifying server
Next was  Checking the DFS service status

Both server temporarily have firewall disabled

Between the Server subnets in both locations, all traffic is passed across the S2S link

Another error

It seems i have to keep trying and each time it gets a little further as the third time i tried, success

I'm starting to suspect we have some network issue here. The other issue Ive just observed is although i have added both servers to the namespace, the foreign server does not show the namespace listed

Server i created the namespace on, I added the foreign server as second step

View on foreign server

User generated imageYou can see only one namespace. I don't know why that one is visible. With the last one I created (Demo2) i unchecked the 2008 mode as i don't have any 2008 servers in my domain.

As i said not building confidence when it seems so erratic.

Default-first-site-name?
Are you not breaking up your ad to reflect different sites, sites and services.

Your issue might related to delay in talking to a remote DC versus the local one.

I.e. ServerA in location A us talking to a DC at location B.

The site definition, would direct serverA in locationA to use DCA as long as it is up, if it is not, then the query will go to the remote.

Sites and services is also where you specify which IPs are at which location.

Name space gor DFS can be added to the view.

we figured out we have a network issue.

Network traffic is fine from server 2 -->1 but is degradegoing the other way. Network team is on it

Thanks for your hep

Issue was due to slow network issue for RPC port 135
