How to insert a 'Tick' character into a textbox. 
You can't do that in normal textbox control.

What best you could try is to add a separate checkbox control aside of that textbox.

A couple of options are use an altenative font e.g. Wingdings (but then the box won't accept 'normal' characters).
Alternatively if the underlying field text format is 'Rich Text' it seems to accept unicode characters, see below.User generated image= U+2713 



A checkbox nicely placed should be more elegant and less error prone.
