Windows 10 OS fails to start

User generated imageUser generated imageHi,

I have a Windows 10 computer (named "TM1") that fails to start. This afternoon, this computer was not responsive to mouse clicks on the desktop screen, so I had not choice but to power off the computer. When I powered it on, it failed to take me to the logon screen.

I tried a few things - automatic startup repair, safe mode start ..., but no luck so far.

I think that the hard drive is ok and in the worst senario, I can get the data files off the hard drive, but this computer has a business software that is difficult to re-install, so if possible, I would love to get current "corrupted OS" fixed so that I can get to the login screen. Then I can think about cloning current HD to a new HD.

On this computer,  I had set up Windows Backup on an external USB HD and I can see that backup has been running until this morning. So this is a good news.

Is there anyway that I can fix this OS utilizing the backup informtion from the external USB HD?

I do have a generic WIndows 10 DVD on hand as well.

Thanks.

I got a call from the user around 10:30am, so they could not have entered a lot of data. There is only one user who enters data into the system.
I like to restore from this morning's backup and make sure that I can bring the computer back to the way it was last night.
I have a new SSD that I purchased this afternoon and like to perform system restore from the backup first.
Depending on the outcome of system restore, I will explore other options.
You can put the new SSD and try and restore from backup onto the new SSD preserving whatever there might be added...

Based on the description, it sounds as though an update was being applied that triggered a reboot......

I am performing a system restore from external usb HD to an temporary SSD.
It should not take long because the previous HD with corrupted OS is only 250GB.

I will keep you posted.

I succesfully restored the system (as of 10/6/2021) from the external USB backup drive to the temporary SSD for testing.
So I restored the same OS to a new permanent SSD HD.
Then I hooked up an original HD (with corrupted OS) to the computer and set it to "online" from disk management.
Now the old hard drive is showing up as D drive.
I should be able to copy the most recent files (since 10/6/21) from the original HD into new HD by asking the user.

Thanks for your help!
