Issue parsing xml using mandrill.. weird characters showing up

We are receiving ADF Formatted XML and parsing it using Mandrill. We seem to be having a bunch of additional characters introduced so when receive it into our crm it fails. Getting things like "3/d\ and =0A

Any idea?? we are stumped:
