Hi,
I'm looking for help with Microsoft licensing, I am looking to purchase a new HP host that will run HyperV 2019 core, on the host I will be running 6 VMs
- DC, DNS, DHCP
- File + Print
- NPS
- App Server
- Backup
- RDS
How do I calculate the licensing, am I correct to say the host running HyperV core is free?
Do I need any CALs
We are using M365 E3 will this cover the CALs?

Microsoft doesn't give out Server Licenses with M365 only client OS and applications. you still need server licenses for each living breathing human and RDP licenses either by user or device

From what I read in the document I linked, if you have a M365 E3 license, you also have a client license to access the server (file shares, DHCP, DNS, etc.). The document is also clear (as are you) that this does not give you the Server license.

Rights to access any licensed on-premises servers OK so you don't need server cals but you will still require RDS CAL's
In every situation where you use Remote Desktop Services, you will need to purchase RDS CAL, which is not included in E5. But VDA CAL is included in E5.
