>>  My home Fuji Xerox CM305DF prints perfectly for hundreds of pages after it tells me that "toner will need replacing very soon".  <<  i don't print much - and it has been warning me for months now
very  good to know it will stop
It's not the same with all printers. Some just refuse to print even if the toner isn't yet empty. They just go by a counter in the Cartridge, that counts the number of pages. Many of those pages may have has very little printed on them, so in my point of view that is a bad measurement for how much toner was used up.

Also, when the print quality diminishes, you can often get it better again by just gently shaking the cartridge a little, so the toner gets distributed better in the cartridge.

Shaking still works to improve Print Quality, but of course it won't work to get it to print again if it has stopped. For that you either need a new chip for the cartridge, or if there is such an option available for your particular printer, a hack that prevents the printer to pass on the page count to the Cartridge's chip, or that bypasses the chip completely.

Since they sell refill ink and a tool to bore a hole for that particular cartridge can we assume there is no counter chip?
It depends. Many of those refill sets are for specific Printer models, & they often include replacement Chips within the Set for those Models. Or sometimes you can also get chips separately.
My bad, you get a new chip with the refill.
