How to prepare a server to receive WSUS updates

I have some servers that have not received Windows updates and I want to make sure I am preparing the servers correctly for WSUS. I see the WSUS Server located in teh registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

But when I execute: wuauclt /detectnow <enter> nothin happens.  What do I need to do to verify WSUS is ready to work?

expected behaviour

What do I need to do to verify WSUS is ready to work?

what happens when checking for updates?  does it show anything that is approved or does it throw an error?
have you looked at the console to see if it is reporting?
start with that

I get this error:  Windows Server 2012 R2 Update Fails error code 80072F8F
I found this web site:  https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/update/windows-update-resources

I will try turning off the services:
BITS service, the Windows Update service and the Cryptographic service.

Then deleting the contents in the c:\windows\software Distribution - folder

is the date/time and time zone correct?
are all the problem servers throwing that error code?
was it working before and suddenly stopped?  if so, did anything change?

It never worked on this server.

None of the servers in this segment are working with WSUS.

Yes the same error code: 80072F8F
ok...have you checked date/time and time zone?
is your GPO configured correctly?  are you manually moving to computer groups or using client-side targeting?
any firewall in between these serves and wsus?

1).  The date and Time are correct.
2).  We do not use GPO's at my work place.
3).  I am not sure how the wsus grouping is setup.
4).  We have a WSUS server for each location and there are no firewalls between the client and the correct WSUS server at that site.

The WSus.exe client ins installed manually; but I think I should try re-installing it.  The error may be related to a certificate error.  I wil vnestigate.  https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/317195-windows-update-error-80072f8f-wsus-over-ssl-certificate-is-imported
