Set the default printer using Item Level Targeting

I am trying to set Printer Preferences using a Group Policy and Item level targeting.

We would like all staff to get the staff_printer as default, unless they are in a specific security group AND at a computer named Science01, Science02, etc.

Each preference works on its own but how do I set the order so that if the science item level target is not met, then the staff_print will work and becomes the default?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Creat several gpos in certain order. Don't worry about the Order for now. You can arrange it at after the gpos are created

At top of list Number 1 is staff printer.  Set its Default Printer checkbox

Remaining gpos are for science01, science 02, ...

In those gpos, set its Default Printer checkbox

Then set its ILT and add 2 items:
- Security Group 1
- Computer science01

After both are added, it should show as AND.

Create another gpo for science02 with similar ILT structure as science01 . If you like, you can copy and paste the science 01 gpo instead of make from scratch

When the gpos are applied, it will first apply gpo 1, then 2, 3, etc, according to its Order

Thanks ever so much NVIT.

Great answer.

Can I just confirm that I need a separate gpo for each printer deployed in Print Managment?

I cannot have 1 gpo and set multiple printer preferences in that single gpo?

If I did have a single gpo would every user see all the printers? Printer preferences set the defaults but would not stop users seeing all the printers?

Many thanks again

Printer preferences set the defaults but would not stop users seeing all the printers?

You have answered my first question. One user gpo does, in fact, show ALL the printers to the users. I did not realise this. I think deploying the printers to computers in Print Management and then using Preferences to set the default to users is what I will do.

Many thanks for a comprehensive answer.
