We have an Office 365 E1 license.. (for email mainly) How does turning on MFA affect our client stations with Office 2016.

Trying to get Office 365 MFA going.  Question is, we use Office 2016 on our PC's and we are not sure how the change will effect our users.  For example if they start Outlook 2016, will it ask for the code each time or the first time or at all..

Enabling modern authentication in Office 365 needs to phase out the basic authentication methods.

  1. Open the Microsoft 365 Admin Center
  2. Expand Settings and click on Org Settings
  3. Select Modern authentication
  4. Turn on modern authentication for Outlook 2016 for Windows and later

Your users might need to remove the saved credential in Credential Manager for the Exchange account in Outlook 2016. Then, run Outlook 2016 again and they will be prompted for MFA after entering the password in the credential prompt. If the user checked the "remember my credentials" checkbox. when they enter the password, they will not be asked for password again unless they have not run Outlook 2016 for more than 90 days.
