Mixing Bronze and Silver processors on a S2600ST motherboard

A customer is using a MB Intel S2600ST with a Skylake Bronze 3106 processor. We ordered another "Refurb" processor but they only had a Silver 4108 processor. They assured us it will work fine in a mixed environment. We fitted this today but the server does not like it and does not boot. The processor supplier still says it will work.

What do you think please?

Personally I think this would only work in certain situations, but usually not. Your mainboard would have to support this to begin with. If it doesn't work, I'd at least make sure the BIOS is up-to-date. Also check the BIOS for any settings you could use to tweak the system so it is more forgiving, particularly in timing situations. It could also be more likely to work if you first use the lower spec CPU, so the server gets "used" to it, & and then add the higher rated CPU.

But generally I wouldn't keep up my hopes too much.

Thanks for the response, I have asked them to send out a matched processor. Waiting to here back from them. I do rate these guys as we have used the for a long time now so do have some trust in them. I suppose it could just be a faulty Processor but I do doubt that.

I will close the question now.

Brian,

Thanks for the comment but it all down to how much the customer wants to spend and how urgent it was. We tried to get a new one but firstly it was going to take a "Few Weeks" and the cost of the new one, well!!
