SharePoint 2016 On Premise - How to open a document library with Windows Explorer

Using IE 11 (and previous versions), it was possible to open a SharePoint document library with Windows Explorer. For two reasons that important functionality no longer works in our environment. The first reason is that on our main web app we are using multiple authentication providers. When that was enabled the 'Open with Windows Explorer' functionality stopped working. (In the same farm on other web apps with AD authentication 'Open in Windows Explorer' works with IE 11.) Btw, webdav does not work on the web app with multi auth providers but works on web apps with single auth providers.
But
Now with Edge becoming our default browser, 'Open in Windows Explorer' is not an option, it is not available.
So two questions here - any idea about a solution for the issue in the first paragraph. Second question - any recommendation about how to restore some type of 'Open in Windows Explorer' capability in Edge and/or chrome. A third party tool would be seriously considered.
