DR /BCP Solution for Big Size SQL VMs with Zero/Minimum RTO and RPO

Looking for Best solution to achieve Disaster Recovery  /BCP with minimal RTO and RPO

Specially for big size VM running SQL or heavy application

Which one would be cheap and best solution as mentioned below

  • SRM with vSphere Replication
  • Metro Cluster
  • Stretch Cluster

What should be best solution for SQL Replication with no impact to Performance ?

vSphere Replication works  with incremental backup  or VM Snapshots ? and will there be any impact on big size sql VMs ? specially for RTO and RPO ?

vSphere Replication creates a snapshot of the virtual machine, which means whilst the VM is being replicated/copied, the VM runs on a snapshot which can affect performance, which depends on the underlying storage system e.g. the datastore.

If you are using vSAN, Flash datastores, the performance issues, is not so much of a problem, BUT the snapshot (Creation and Deletion) can cause the database to Stutter!

I would test the current VM if you can, may be best to clone and check in Test and Dev, the effect of snapshotting.

OR look at a SAN solution where the replication is done at the LUN and the snapshot is done on the SAN, which does not affect the VM. (This is SRM)

But other solutions exist with SAN to SAN replication.

Thanks Andrew for the feedback here, so what should be best solution to use for SQL Running VMs

If we go with Array based Replication with SRM will that work here ?
do we need separate licencing to use Array for storage replication ?
and what if we have separate storage at primary and Dr Site ?
and if we go for Stretch Cluster this is manual Fail over ?
for Metro Node it will be much costly then other solutions ?

SQL Availability groups running on a stretched cluster?
SQL Prime, with Synchronous secondary at one site with asynchronous replication to remote site
This is the best money I have ever spent. I cannot not tell you how many times these folks have saved my bacon. I learn so much from the contributors.

Hello Gerald Connolly,

SQL Availability groups running on a stretched cluster? No
SQL Prime, with Synchronous secondary at one site with asynchronous replication to remote site :No
are you talking about Replication within SQL itself ? i.e. always on ?

Was looking for solution if we can achieve Zero RTO Zero RPO for Big Size SQL VM i.e. of 10-15 TB coming from Pure Store on vSphere 7 ?
This is not Metro node solution in Pure Store ?

Test and try VMware vSphere Replication, it will not cost you anything other than time, because it will be included with your licenses.

Data replication Pure Storage to Pure Storage is supported, if you have Pure devices at both DCs.
