Sync .local to .com azure AD / office 365

Hi. I've inherited a .local that also has a .com azure AD / office 365 setup. They are not synced. How can I sync them without issue? I'm looking to map .local users with their corresponding azure AD user and also sync passwords. I've Googled this but I guess I went to far down the Google rabbit hole and now I'm too confused to confidently move forward.

Any help is appreciated.

You can't sync a .local domain directly. You need to add a UPN suffix to the domain then configure the user accounts to use the new UPN suffix. A UPN suffix is a routable domain name, for example, a .com domain name. The domain you use for the UPN suffix will also need to be added to Azure AD as a custom domain.

Thanks, Daryl. I'll go about adding the additional UPN. From what I recall, I can then use AAD connect to sync based on the UPN. I'm guessing the new / additional UPN should match the user's email address in order to correctly map.
