Utility/process to change local administrator password on Server 2019 Hyper-V VM

I just restored an old Server 2019 Hyper-V VM.

Now when I power this VM up I am unable to remote desktop into this server and log on with the domain administrator username and password. I get an error message that the trust relationship has failed.

I've also tried logging on with the local administrator password but am unable to log on with the passwords that should be valid for this account.

So I'm looking for a utility or method that will allow me to reset the local administrator password on this Server 2019 Hyper-V virtual machine.

Please provide me with a list of utilities or methods that will allow me to do this.

I will be more than happy to purchase such a utility since it will take a very long time to reconfigure this server from scratch.

Lee,

I have already tried the process you have described but that hasn't worked.

So do you know of any software or utilities that will allow me to change the local administrator password on Server 2019 Hyper-V VM?
I get an error message that the trust relationship has failed.

login as the local administrator (use .\administrator) and remove from the domain
in AD, reset the computer account (no need to delete the computer object) then restart that vm and add to the domain again

Philip,

Will this Utilman.EXE method work even though I'm not able to log on to the Server 2019 Hyper-V virtual machine having this problem?

I just did it not too long ago and did not have any issues.

It still works as far as I know.

@Lee That linked article is talking about a Debugging structure. The boot to .ISO, repair, rename, copy, boot, reset password, boot, rename and copy back, and finally boot back into the OS just works.

Also, does anyone know of any utilities or other programs that will reset the local administrator password similar to the utilities on the old Hirens bootable CD that were able to do this?

As long as the issue is not with DC, only one way defender is not running and should be enough to change the password or add a new user and add it to the administrators group.
Odd the system does not complain that it lost trust which is usually where the issue with the login not re-syncing to the AD.
IT guy, you hope to use Dart.

As the standard process is simple (and described step by step here), allow the question why you are not preferring what you were given here?

Again, way1, exchange utilman.exe for a copy of CMD.exe, boot to safe mode, use the exchanged utilman to get a command prompt and type
Net user administrator newpassword /active
(you need to be quick if defender is active)

Way 2: edit the registry directly in WinPE (booted setup) as described by me. Here, you have all the time in the world.

Afterwards, use the Powershell command
Reset-Computermachinepassword to re-establish the trust (applies to both).

Both methods take less than 5 minutes and they are free.

I'm also interested in obtaining Dart in addition to what I need to do here.

Dart sounds like a good resource to have in the future.
There are a few utilities in MDOP that are still indispensable to us through to today. DaRT is one and Crash Analyzer is another.

Yes, that is why I want to obtain these utilities for when I need to use them.
