Updating Gigabyte bios - need HELP.

Updating Gigabyte bios - need HELP.  Z390 gaming X, Bios v.F7.  Does not have TPM settings to set for Win 11 upgrade.  I put the newer bios on a usb but how do you actually update the dang thing?  It's not intuitive.  Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Mark

Are you just updating the BIOS to v.10 or do you want to add TPM 2.0?

The Gaming X 1.1, as supplied, only has a TPM header. You need to purchase and install the additional Gigabyte GC-TPM2ww.0_S 2.0 TPM Module. (Gigabyte Motherboard Component P/N 4719331807504) to get hardware TPM 2.0 on this board.

The board supports @BIOS and Q-Flash for updating
I’d go for Q-Flash as it will also back up your current version.

Download the latest BIOS version for the board
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/Z390-GAMING-X-rev-11/support#support-dl-bios

Put the unzipped files on a USB stick (formatted as FAT32)
Boot the system, go to the BIOS setup screen, F8 will launch Q-Flash from there
Follow the on screen instructions

well I'd like to update the BIOS but I should probably buy the module too
can you assist me with getting this stupid bios updated?
Just upgrading the BIOS won't give you TPM 2.0. That is a hardware chip which you need to have. If you don't have that chip, you won't get TPM 2.0. But there is a way to install Windoze 11 without the need for TPM 2.0 (Older TPM versions should work with that hack). Besides that, your CPU will also have to support Windoze 11. On Systems that don't already have TPM 2.0, it is unlikely that your CPU will support Windoze 11, as it is probably too old (but again the hack should work).

The problem with the hack is that you can't be sure how long it will work (future updates/upgrades could fail). So rather than using the hack, if you can get the TPM 2.0 Module, & make sure your CPU supports Windoze 11, you should do that. The hack can be OK for testing purposes.

Windoze lol!  This is a new build it's only 2 years old I bought everything brand new from the bozos at micro center. Where does this chip plug into on the board anyway?
If you grab the manual it's the TPM header.

When you get the module it comes with full instructions.

TBH why would you want TPM 2.0 for a gaming rig?  Oh yes, it's because Microsoft have made it a minimum requirement of their new OS!
2 years is old in IT terms. You can get lucky & have a CPU that that supports Windoze 11, but chances are big that it doesn't. What is your CPU?
It's the new Intel whatever it is I have to look it up when I get home but it's a $400 processor

Can i5 processor support Windows 11?

January 14, 2022 by Helen Kurt
Yes, Intel i5 processors do support Windows 11. As per the list shared by Microsoft, there are 91 processors from the Intel i5 family of processors that support Windows 11. This also implies that not all i5 processors are compatible with Windows 11. The common denominator in all the supported i5 Intel processors is that they are at least 8th generation or higher generation processors. An Intel i5 generation processor that is below the 8th generation is considered incompatible for Windows 11 operating system.

According to the link below, your CPU is supported:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/minimum/supported/windows-11-supported-intel-processors

So you will just need the TPM2.0 module for your Mainboard.

@masq I cant enter bios with END.  I restart and hammer END and the computer goes right into Windows
Maybe found a workaround. I plugged in the USB finally got the computer to the BIOS and the cordless keyboard wouldn't work so I had to find a corded keyboard and that worked. So I'm at this screen now and it sees the USB but I have no idea how to navigate from hereUser generated image

No matter what I try once I get into this area and no matter where I put the file it says can't read file
Make sure it is formatted as FAT or FAT32, not NTFS. If it already is FAT or FAT32, reformat it. If it still won't work, download the file again. But again, before you don't have the TPM2.0 module, Windoze 11 won't install. Once you have installed the module, you probably won't really need to upgrade the BIOS anyway.

If your mainboard already has the TPM2.0 module installed, check the BIOS settings. normally you can switch the settings there from TPM1.2 (sometimes need for older OS's) to TPM2.0.
@rindi right now I'm just trying to step up from f7 to f8. Trying a different USB drive I reformatted it it is on 32. Here's what it looks like when I try to updateUser generated image

The USB drive is formatted as FAT32? If you go back to the "Task" tab you should see this:
User generated image
You should be able to back up your BIOS which is a check that the USB drive is recognized, and then choose update to point it at the unzipped v.10 files.

Either you downloaded the wrong file, or it is corrupt. Download it again.
It will back up should I choose to do so
That is always a good idea.
Okay I'll re download it please bear with me...
Is that error from saving or loading the image?

Do you just have the Z390GX.F10 file in the root of the USB drive?  (if not try this)
Nope same error invalid bios image
If you're wondering where I'm getting that error just look at the screenshot I sent you where it says status task file and so on and then system volume information and then I typed in e f i f l a s h.exe once I hit enter there then I get the error
I don't think you want to put the entire zip file on the root of the USB drive do you?

Okay please bear with me. I just put the exe on the stick
If you use efiflash the syntax is:
efiflash Z390GX.F10
You also need the BIOS file, not just the "exe".
Okay well that's wacky actually you do have to do the manual step by step extraction manually to the USB drive to make it work now I'm atUser generated image this screen
No idea what fast or intact means
You need the Microcode updated (part of the security fix the firmware is providing) so choose Intact.  They are two different modes for UEFI code flashing, Intact allows the Intel ME to be updated as well but "Fast" doesn't change it.

Handy that they've made that clear on the user interface(!)

Looks like you're there now though (provided you're not prone to power outages !!)
No power outages and my daughter did not knock the usb out of the computer :)  Im now updated to the latest Gigabyte wants me on.  Wow, that's not easy!  Im used to HP and Dell corporate updates!

At any rate, let me go to the store and see how much that tpm chip is.  Is MS giving me Win 11 if I have the tpm or will they then CHARGE me?
Part of that was me not explaining the flash process clearly enough at the outset though.
If you've got 10 it will upgrade free to 11 adding TPM isn't sufficient a change to trigger relicensing.
Ok
This might be useful once the module arrives
