What are the ramifications of someone creating a domain simply to redirect to a seperate site?

I have a client that just sent an email informing me that he has set up a URL for a video gallery page on his site. His video gallery's actual URL is 'uscareersonline.com/video-gallery.html' but he has set up the URL of 'videogallery.us' that apparently redirects to the actual. Not a clue as to how he accomplished this, he's a big Fiverr fan, so I'm sure someone there talked him into it.

My question is, what are the ramifications both security-wise and SEO-wise? I imagine that if it's a 301 redirect on the videogallery.us domain, then Google will treat it like any other shortened URL and pass Page Rank on. But does this provide an avenue for any type of hacking?

no security issue besides ssl setup which will require more work should it be needed. if the frontal domain hosts a reverse proxy such as what cloudflare provides, the security would actually be significantly improved.

nobody really knows the ever changing seo algorithms but most search engines won't currently penalise a 301 much but they probably will index the wrong url.
i doubt it is merely a 301 as the url would not be preserved in the address bar which defeats the purpoise of the second domain

I'm looking for ideas as to why would someone suggest doing this by creating a new domain when URL shorteners are freely available. I feel there's an ulterior motive.
Is there a method to show exactly what sort of redirect is being utilized?
Sorry...found several URL inspectors right after writing that. Looks to be a 301.
you can use the network pane of developpers tools or run the query manually using telnet, curl or whatever, you can sniff the traffic... many ways to view the redirection.

it is totally feasible to just have the other domain resolve to the same ips which would work without redirection. (and cause seo issues at least with google)

as to why, maybe they just want a nicer name. videogallery totally qualifies. also note that the domain name might help with google searches if the user types a keyword which is part of the name.
