asked on

active directory, vmdk, vmware

We have 4 recovery manager for active directory servers in  data center 1. This is regarding failover of RMAD servers to another data center lets say to data center 2

is there any  cross datacenter Vmotion  disaster recovery strategy that i can use?

The replica I’m talking about is another .vmdk file created  for vmdk file in data center 1on  another ESX in datacenter 2

Is there any  constant updates between the between the 2 data centers. Lets say  if we lose the production site, we can just start this replica on the other site. Can we  use the F5 appliances to constantly detect where the server is in order to dynamically provide the right DNS resolution depending on the instance online.

Virtual server instances are actually .vmdk files on the ESX’s (which are Linux servers).

The reason I am asking is I have 2 choices  ( one I mentioned above)

2)Other create new server instances in datacenter 2  by building new servers and enabling replication between them by installing RMAD software on the server. This option involves cost and takes time to build the replica servers.

which option should i go for?

yes but if i have  vmdk file  which is constantly replication to another datacenter

and if datacenter 1 is gone as u said then i get the servers from the replicated vmdk file on data cenetr2?
You cannot replicate a VM to two datacentres.

If Datacentre 1 is down and gone, then you start your VMs on Datacentre 2

You would need to use SAN to SAN replication.

Yes thanks for the info but I shared 2 options in my question

Which one is better option?

Getting vmdk replicated or create new instance in data center ?

I was referring to vmdk file replication to another data center?

i have to find  from my vmware team

so vmdk.file replication is different from vm replication as you mentioned above? or is it same
