If you want to unmerge anyway, just click the top left of the sheet to select all and click unmerge

Tried that. Merge button is dimmed, although it has the little dash line in the box next to it, indicating some cells are merged. Clicking on it does nothing.
a screenshot, please?

Is the worksheet protected?
The file requires a password to open. No other protections.
I can’t replicate the issue. The only time that box is disabled for me is if the sheet is protected.
Rory Archibald Just to be sure, are you using the Mac version?
User generated imageThis is what I see.
Yes, I'm using the Mac version.

Given that your protection options are disabled, is that a shared workbook? (you'll see " - Shared" after the workbook name in the application title bar). That would also disable the ability to unmerge cells.
It says Shared, but none of the sharing options I find provide a way to turn it off or indicate with whom it is shared. Clicking the Share button top right says to copy or upload it to the cloud to share. File > Share does not show any sharing in place, and the sharing flyout options are dimmed. I also found the merged cells but it does not give me the option to unmerge them. It is still dimmed when I select the shared cells.

Tracking options dimmed. So are the Protection options.

Disregard my last reply. When I clicked another cell, the options are there. I will try as you suggest.

That worked. What a convoluted way of doing things by the designers. How did you discover that? Thank you very much.
For the benefit of others, here are the specific steps I took based on your instructions:
Tools > Track Changes > Highlight changes > Select "Track changes while editing..." > Choose "All" and "Everyone" and select "Highlight changes on screen" Close, then....
Tools > Track Changes > Highlight changes > Deselect "Track changes while editing..." > Close

thanks for the feedback. it seems to be a defect caused by Track Changes.
