Cropping a portion of a picture in powerpoint

I need to crop out a bit of picture in powerpoint but I cannot figure out how to do it with crop to shape. Is there a way you can crop with a free hand drawing tool or maybe there is a way that someone on EE knows.  The picture is of a hand that has a bit on the top finger that I want smoothed out so it is not jagged. You could do this in one of two ways:

1. Use a freeform vector shape to create a mask and then the merge shapes tools to create an intersect.
2. Use the Remove Background tool in the Picture Format tab (this doesn't actually drop but makes the unwanted area of the picture transparent).

Method 1

  • From the Insert tab, create a mask by using the Freeform shape tool to click clicking around the perimeter of the area you want to keep:
  • User generated imageYou can adjust each node after the freeform has been created by right-clicking and using Edit Points. Each node comprises three handles which represent the Bezier curve. You can also change the type of each node by right clicking the black handle and choosing from Smooth / Straight / Corner point.
  • Then select the picture followed by the shape (use Shift+click to select both in that order).
  • Click the Shape Format tab and use the Merge Shapes tool to create an Intersect:

I don't know how to do it in PowerPoint. Here's a quick crack at it using other imaging tools:

That is what I need But I need to send you the picture without the background. Can you do that and send it back through EE with the same pic quality? There is a little bit more on the left side of the finger that needs to be taken out as well.

Sorry. I meant I will send the pic without the background

Thanks!  Looks great.

Given the title of the question was "Cropping a portion of a picture in powerpoint" I'm a little surprised you awarded the points this way @mkramer77

You're very welcome. When I first saw your question, I wasn't sure if doing it in PowerPoint was important or if it was just the result that was important. I assumed the latter and am glad that works for you. Regards, Joe

I somehow did not see your comment until I awarded the points. I did not scroll up. When the solution from Joe came  in I clicked on it and saw that it was finished and awarded the points.  I do believe your (Jamie Garroch) solution would have worked.
