Android: Can't share common file types like *.pdf or *.mp3 any more

Since a while I cannot share common file types like *.pdf or *.mp3 on my Xiaomi Redmi 8 Pro phone with MIUI 12.5.8. A short popup opens that says (translated from German): "not supported file". In the past that worked flawlessly. I am not aware that I changed any options related to this.

I am not an expert in this area, but I will try to assist to the best of my ability. Are you opening the PDF then sharing? Do you have Adobe Reader installed on your Android, if not try installing that and see if you can share via the app.

Thank you very much for your quick reply! As I have also problems with mp3 file format I assume that Adobe Reader cannot solve the problem. It does not matter, if I share the PDF directly from my email client or if I open it before (Xodo Reader) and then share it.

When was this last working for you?  MTP file sharing has been disabled in MIUI 12.

How do you normally share the files?

Have you enabled Developer options?

If yes, go to Settings->Additional settings-> Developer options->Reset to default values

@MASQ: I usually share files (for example from a recording app) by pressing the share symbol with the three dots, then choose for example WhatsApp and the respective chat.

@Jackie Man: This might be the right path, but even with disabled develper options the problem remains. If I activate them, I cannot find a specific optiion to reset the developer options to their default values...

Thanks for the explanation I was looking at a different issue. This is a known bug in MIUI 12.5.8.

Jackie Man was on the right track you need to enable Developer Optimisation  AND enable Force Allow apps to write to external storage

Ignore my previous comments which aren't related to the issue you have.

This might be the right path, but even with disabled develper options the problem remains. If I activate them, I cannot find a specific optiion to reset the developer options to their default values.

You need to enable developer options and within developer options, scroll down to the bottom and you will see "reset to default values".

@Jackie Man:

You wrote "You need to enable developer options and within developer options, scroll down to the bottom and you will see "reset to default values".

I can now see this option at the bottom, but the problem is that it is greyed out. What can I do to activate it?

Try this...

  • 1 Go to "Settings"
  • 2 Tap "About device" or "About phone"
  • 3 Tap “Software information”
  • 4 Tap “Build number” seven times. ...
  • 5 Enter your pattern, PIN or password to enable the Developer options menu.
  • 6 The "Developer options" menu will now appear in your Settings menu.

No, sorry I was a bit vague in my words.

I have successfully activated the developer options, but at the bottom of the (very long) developer options screen at the bottom (almost at the bottom) "reset to default values" is greyed out.
