RemoteApp and Desktop Connections Won't Save Credentials

Hello All,

I have users that connect to a cloud service for their accounting via the RemoteApp and Desktop Connections.  Unfortunately Windows 11 is not playing nice and their credentials will not save.  This only happens to domain users and not local accounts.  I can login as a local account and create the connection and everything is fine.  But once I login as a domain user the connection will ask for the password every time the connection is made.  There was a registry "fix" that added a new registry key called RDGClientTransport with a value of 1  in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client.  This only works the initial time and the credentials show up.  But when the system is rebooted the connection fails with a security warning.  If I remove the credentials for the remote connection it will allow the user to connect but the password needs to be added manually and there is no option to remember credentials.

Has anyone heard of a Windows update causing this or anything else that might have broken the RemoteApp connections?

Regards,

Rob

That's a good thing. One should never have saved credentials for a RemoteApp or RD Session Host Desktop connection.

There are Group Policies that can configure the farm to block saved credentials.

Where is the RD Farm or RDS setup? Is it local or some cloud vendor?

Rob, ask your admin. This might be intended.

My recommendation: enforce the feature "remote credential guard" anywhere. That will not need credentials to be saved but still allows single sign on! It's secure and comfortable!

@McKnife - I am the administrator and unfortunately this vendor does not have the option for a single sign on.  They have provided the login name and password for each user connecting to their remote desktop.

@Philip - Not true about saving credentials for RemoteApp sessions.  This is a common practice when connecting to RemoteApps.  I agree that users should not save credentials for things like VPN or Remote Desktop sessions.  But RemoteApp connections are encrypted and secure while some Remote Desktop and VPN protocols are not.   I have looked at the GP for our domain and none of them are blocking credential saving.  If that was the case there would be no credentials saved including Dropbox, Box, O365 etc.  Those are all being saved in Credential Manager.  It is only the RemoteApp credentials that won't save - and only for some Windows 11 systems.  This seems to be a hit or miss issue.

I was putting this question out to the group to see if I missed something that MS might have done with an update on specific types of domain connected systems in Windows 11 that could have caused this.

Two things:

1: Internally, setting up Single Sign-On takes care of any credentials needs. No prompts.

2: Externally, no saved passwords should ever be allowed. That's anathema.

A desktop computer is a personal computer designed for use at a single location due to its size and power requirements, usually by one person. The most common configuration has a case that houses the power supply, motherboard, disk storage (usually one or more hard disk drives and optical disc drives); a keyboard and mouse for input; and computer monitor and printer for output. The case may be oriented horizontally and placed atop a desk or vertically and placed underneath or beside a desk.
