AWS EC2 Instance running Windows Server 2019 - reboot/stop/start - will MAC address change?

Hi Experts,

I have an AWS EC2 Instance running Windows Server 2019.

It has a Elastic Network Interface (ENI) assigned to it.

We use a very important application for which the licence is locked to the MAC address.

AWS has just notified us: “Amazon EC2 has detected degradation of the underlying hardware hosting your EC2 instance”.
“This instance is scheduled for maintenance and will be rebooted any time between 2023-01-09 02:00:00 UTC and 2023-01-09 04:00:00 UTC.”

It appears I have 2 options:

  1. Sit back and let the scheduled reboot go ahead

“During maintenance, the instance will be rebooted. The reboot generally takes a few minutes to complete. After the reboot, your instance retains its IP address, DNS name, and any data on local instance-store volumes.”

2.   Stop and start the instance at any time before the scheduled reboot

“You can stop and start the instance at any time before the scheduled start time of the scheduled reboot event. This will migrate the instance to a new host and the instance will not have to undergo the scheduled maintenance. *Please note that the data on any local instance-store volumes will not be preserved when you stop and start your instance.* “

My worry is that the MAC address may change?

My preference is for Option 2.

Will the MAC address change as a result of Option 1 and/or Option 2?

Regards,

Leigh

Thanks, Am P.

So just to be clear - in my case ENI is already associated with EC2.

Are you sure the MAC address will not change with reboot or stop/start activity?

Please refer https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/using-eni.html about ENI.

If possible, you can give it a try by setting up similar environment (with different lower-end EC2 instance with associated ENI) temporarily and perform some tests of reboot/stop/start.

Apologies with such suggestion. This is an infrastructure activity and I am being a developer I am not allow to make such changes in our environment to get you concrete answer. Please dont mind.
