Can I add a 2022 Domain Controller to an Existing Domain with a 2008 DC?

Hi experts!

The SBS 2011 network only has 1 DC running on a Windows 2008 R2 server. We want to add another DC running on a newer Windows Server OS.

How "new" can we go? Can we go with Windows 2022 or something lower  (2012)?

Thanks!

Migration of NTFRS to DFSR is one step, the other one is extend AD schema. Here you have whole procedure of domain migration - How to migrate Active Directory from Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2022 (microsoft.com) .
Of course you should have new licenses - Windows Server license and Windows Servers CALs for all users. SBS works in one DC configuration so you should plan migration of all services to newer ones - including DHCP, DNS, Exchange and Sharepoint. And of course file resources.

Note that extension of schéma is automatically done during the promotion of the new DC.

Another condition probably already filed is to have 2008 R2 level of functionality.
