Upgrade server 2019 to 2022 that has not been activated

Can slmgr be used to provide a temporary activation while 2019 std is upgraded to 2022 std?  I do not want to burn a 2019 license key (already installed by previous MSP) that never provided or activated the key.  I now want to take the server to 2022 and the upgrade process states it cannot upgrade an installation that is not activated.  If so, may I ask what the best cmdlet option would be to use?

slmgr /rearm may work from an elevated CMD.

The MSP was probably using SPLA (Service Provider License Agreement) keys to activate Microsoft products. That key belongs to them.

If you're working with a new MSP they can activate once the contract has been signed.

If not, you can use the server it's not going to spontaneously combust on you until such time as you either sign with an MSP or buy the required license(s).

Installation is the act of making a computer program program ready for execution. Because the process varies programs often come with a specialized program responsible for doing whatever is needed for their installation. Installation may be part of a larger software deployment process. Cross platform installer builders that produce installers for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux include InstallAnywhere, InstallBuilder and Install4J. Installers for Microsoft Windows include Windows Installer, InstallShield, and Wise Installation Studio; free installer-authoring tools include NSIS, IzPack, Clickteam, InnoSetup, InstallSimple and WiX. Mac OS X includes Installer, and also includes a separate software updating application.
