Dell Optiplex Running Hdd Continually
Dell Optiplex (more than one) seems to have an issue with constant Hdd activity slowing down response. I've tuned, scanned with Housecall, disable non essential startup items and indexing but it persists...
If found some old articles related but no solutions posted so having another shot at it here, has anyone else come across it and any fixes found?
Many thanks

Anti malware svc the most regular but 1 mb/sec, top 5 are otherwise currently running software..
It's definitely Optiplex all form factors, only other thing I can see so far is that they have AVG and Support Assist loaded..
Other models don't seem so affected..
Wondering if there is a way to adjust without disabling defender anti malware or reinstalling W10..

test on one system with only Defender activated (uninstall 3rd party AV)
How much RAM do those systems have? Is the disk close to full? If yes, cleanup some space. You can also test by disabling the pagefile, if you have enough RAM it often isn't necessary. Are the disks conventional disks or SSD's? If conventional, what is their speed?
If it is an option, I'd suggest adding an SSD for the OS. Depending on the Optiplex model it may already include an M.2 socket where you could install a fast NVMe SSD.

Best guess in OneDrive background syncs are tripping the defender anti malware service executable..
It's nothing more obvious that I can see, but I guess that particular folder could be excluded from realtime scanning..

It is also getting to the point with Windows that anything less than 8GB of ram can start triggering swap...
did you test with only defender active? what are the results then?

actually, you can use Windows Resource Monitor to monitor disk activities and sort the related processes by Read or Write performance in order to quickly determine the wrongdoer.
from task manager bring up the performance monitor and go to the disk tab to see what is causing the disk activity.
