looking for book cover repair tools
i want to "repair" my book flaps as well as possible, and acap (as cheap as possible ) too; in short free or low cost solutions are what i'm after for fonts repair in picture
an example :
if you think you can guide me through something like gimp - that's also welcome!
i have a good print shop to get the result printed

Paul, thanks for the suggestion; i've used the font finder, but fail to use it in the image i posted; maybe you have some some tips?
Joe, no, your first answer is excellent - the font repair is only one step, i should have been more clear in my post
can you post how you started? i simply don't see how to start...
and here's an additional Q, i have scanned a second part of the cover, and want to stitch it to the first; how can i do that?
ASKER
Paul, i meant i find the font easily; but fail to use it to repair the image; maybe you have tips on that procedure?

>> I took your question to mean that you want to scan in the book flaps and fix the images <<< correct
and tx hor the how to ! i'll try it out and let you know
Let me know if you have problems with my written steps...I'll do a video for you.

excellent support from both of you !
Paul i noticed you mentioned scribus - a free publishing tool; is it any better than the MS publisher?
and i came across another problem: i thought if i printed it on an A4 format i would have the flap printed ok, but the dimension is 47x 21,7 cm and an A3 is only 42 cm long; so how would you try to solve that? any ideas ?
if need be i can print both F+ B separately and glue the spine (black)
as Joe said, it's easy enough to stitch images together.
i usually use (in Windows 10/11) GIMP or paint.net - both use layers. with these apps, it's easy enough to select the specific canvas size for each individual cover.
the trick is to use any desktop publisher to get your final image in the correct image size and format for your print shop. you should be able to import image parts and set them up correctly
i generally use Scribus or Inkscape free desktop publishing apps. i just recently purchased a lifetime subscription for MS Office Pro Plus 2021 which includes MS Publisher, but i haven't used it in a very long time (late 1990's)

Paul i think you misread, i'm looking for how to print a format length of 47 cm on a "normal" printer joe stitched it already
i was even thinking of printing on the old chain paper ( i still have a stack ) - would that work ?
you're right - i misread the question...
what app are you using to print from? or are you using: Right-click on image ―> Print?
Based on this thread (and others we've been on together), you must be an IrfanView user, so you may as well do it in that. In the Print Preview dialog, click Printer setup and select A3 paper size. Then select these options:
Landscape
Best fit to page (aspect ratio)
cm (in Units) [not needed unless you do 'custom' and/or 'position']
With my printer, it looks like this:
But my question for you is: Why are you printing it? I would put the file on a flash drive for your good print shop...they can certainly handle that...or do you have some other reason for printing it?
Btw, another approach is to reduce the size of the image (proportionally) to 42 cm wide (which makes it 18.47 cm high) via Image>Resize/Resample:
You may want to make it a bit smaller, maybe 38-40 cm wide, as some printers won't print right to the edge of the page, i.e., they require at least a certain size margin. Regards, Joe

@Paul: well, i mostly put the image in a word doc file, so i can measure the dimensions with the ruler- but i'm open for other suggestions
@Joe, ok i don't see the size selection; and A3 is just too small
both : i am only looking into the chain paper - because it's there- unused - and i thought : can i use it for these flap printings? or is it not possible with my printer Hp laserjet pro 200 m251nw - plan to test that out and let you know
First, I corrected my last post...you need to do the printer setup first so that IrfanView knows the paper size (I fixed the order of events in the text and updated the screenshot).
> i don't see the size selection
Very surprising...nearly all printers have a size selection (Letter, Legal, A4, A3, etc.).
> A3 is just too small
I understand that it's too small to fit on the book, but I thought that your good print shop would take care of printing it at the right size on paper suitable for a book jacket. I was not thinking that the final product would be done on your personal printer.
> can i use it for these flap printings? or is it not possible with my printer Hp laserjet pro 200 m251nw
I can't help on that one...I'm not familiar with your printer.
> plan to test that out and let you know
OK, looking forward to your test results.
Cheers, Joe

when i said i don't see the size selection, i meant on your picture above in irfanview
it seems my laserjet handles max 42 cm long
so it will be the print shop, or any other solution (printing 2 x A4 and gluing them)
i'm still thinking about printing the front and back separately on the chain form opposite so they fit together like this
it's a hobby you know....
i see -
what is the exact size of the original book cover - this will help in giving you an approach to print.
also, i notice that the maximum paper size for your printer is US Legal (216 x 356 mm or 8.5 x 14 in) https://www.manua.ls/hp/laserjet-pro-200-m251nw/manual?p=24:
Table 2-1 Supported paper and print media sizes
Size Dimensions
Letter 216 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 in) Legal 216 x 356 mm (8.5 x 14 in) Executive 184 x 267 mm (7.24 x 10.51 in) 8.5 x 13 216 x 330 mm (8.5 x 13 in) 4 x 6 102 x 152 mm (4 x 6 in) 5 x 8 127 x 203 mm (5 x 8 in) A4 210 x 297 mm (8.27 x 11.69 in) A5 148 x 210 mm (5.83 x 8.27 in) A6 105 x 148 mm (4.13 x 5.83 in) B5 (JIS) 182 x 257 mm (7.17 x 10.12 in) 10 x 15 cm 100 x 150 mm (3.9 x 5.9 in) 16k 184 x 260 mm (7.24 x 10.23 in) 195 x 270 mm (7.68 x 10.62 in) 197 x 273 mm (7.75 x 10.75 in) Custom Minimum: 76 x 127 mm (3 x 5 in) Maximum: 216 x 356 mm (8.5 x 14.0 in)
i seems that the maximum paper length for your printer is, in fact, 356 mm...

Paul i posted ,it a day ago " but the dimension is 47x 21,7 cm "
but when i go in the printing options, i can get up ro 42 cm - but that's not enough....
Ah, OK, that's because the size selection occurs in the printer's dialog (when clicking the Printer setup button), not IrfanView's dialog. Looks like this with my printer:
> it seems my laserjet handles max 42 cm long
That makes sense, because A3 is 29.7x42 cm.
> so it will be the print shop, or any other solution (printing 2 x A4 and gluing them)
Yep!
> i'm still thinking about printing the front and back separately on the chain form
Should work...let us know how it turns out.
> it's a hobby you know
Have fun! :)
Based on Paul's excellent post, I realize that I may have misunderstood your question. You do say in your initial post "what i'm after for fonts repair" and that's obviously what Paul focused on. I interpreted the question as looking for a more general image repair, such as removing the large white spot on the big letter S, removing the small white spot after the "A" in BRUNA, making the light black areas into dark black (so the blacks match better), fixing the thin purple line, making the light blue area in the text on the right side into a darker blue (so the blues match better), etc. Regards, Joe
Edit: Note that the image I posted is only 600x446, because that's the low-res image that the free MagicEraser created (your original image is 2270x1691).
