Dear Experts,
We currently have four divisions, each managing its own projects that involve software-driven products or solutions. I have been asked to take ownership of the following areas:
- Driving software development aligned with the SDLC framework
- Implementing and managing DevOps processes and infrastructure
- Ensuring product cybersecurity
While I am happy to take this up, I would like to understand on the following:
- Do all of these responsibilities typically fall under the scope of the IT Head
- Or is software development (aligned with SDLC) usually driven by a different resource, such as a Software Project Manager/ Software Program Manager
- DevOps will be handled by DevOps engineer and reporting to IT head /CTO
- Product cybersecurity will be handled by cybersecurity professional and reporting to IT head /CTO
Understanding this would help me get clarity about the structure typically followed in the industry and ensure responsibilities are appropriately aligned, Please advice

Software is any set of instructions that directs a computer to perform specific tasks or operations. Computer software consists of programs, libraries and related non-executable data (such as documentation). Computer software is non-tangible, contrasted with computer hardware, which is the physical component of computers. Software written in a machine language is known as "machine code". However, in practice, software is usually written in high-level programming languages than machine language. High-level languages are translated into machine language using a compiler or interpreter or a combination of the two.
