About PathExplorer

This tool was created because I got frustrated with trying to find CSS paths for elements on webpages while developing UI automation as part of my job. I often found myself hopping between Firefox and Chrome tools because neither had all of what I was looking for. I just wanted to click on the element and see the shortest CSS path for UI automation.

Launching the downloadable jar file will open the Path Explorer interface. Enter the URL of the webpage you'd like to inspect and once it is done loading, the path read out section will display "Page ready".

Clicking on an element will then display its CSS path, the path shown will be the shortest CSS path that can be found.

By default selected elements will be outlined in red and clicking on a navigational element will provide the CSS path rather than following the link. These defaults can be adjusted in Settings.

In those cases, the application will navigate back to the page you where on.  When not active, clicking on such elements direct to linked page.
  • Show path on hover: When activate the path for the element will be displayed as soon as you hover over it. Best used for elements that trigger asynchronous actions on click.
  • Show Logs: Toggles display of the explorer log, easily scroll through previously highlighted elements for quick reference.
  • Element highlight color: Determines what outline color is used when highlighting a page element. Choose from red, green and, blue.
