I need to find out how often a user has been rebooting or shutting down her Mac laptop.

How can I query the Mac logs to determine the dates and times when a Mac OS X computer has been rebooted or shut down?

Hi

A brand new 13" MacBook Air has a keyboard problem
The following sets of keys don't work :
789,  uio,   jkl,   ?/

I reset the NVRAM ans SMC but that didn't make the slightest bit of difference

The funny thing is that when I type these keys while at the login screen (for the password field)
dots appear thus proving that the keyboard is actually sending a signal

Any ideas ?

What are the costs of converting back to Windows?

I love my Mac, but have how two bad buying experiences in the past couple weeks. I am now considering NOT spending a bunch of money getting some new PAC and just going back to Windows.

I have an iPhone and use iCloud for data sharing, but even that has had technical troubles, to be honest.  Apple ID has let me down with log in problems, even the Apple Care seems to have trouble getting to work.

Any advice on dumping the whole platform and just saving a lot of money?

I have an iPhone 7, and intend to keep that. But I am not a power user at all.

I really dislike Windows 10, though. At least when it shows me all this flashing junk in all these different windows.

The new MacBook I bought for $2,400, where I would need to spend another $375 for Apple Care, has this problem where the machine hangs on me. As I use Chrome, the whole machine freezes. That is an ugly issue where I would rather return the machine that try and debug it. Also, it's got all these fancy keyboard option, BUT only three hours of battery life. Just like I told the sales rep, those bells and whistles use up all the juice.

So, I am losing faith in the Mac brand. Anyone want to try and restore it?

Or, what brand and model of Windows machine might be interesting to consider as an alternative?

What kinds of file issues might I have? I have all my data on Time Machine backups. I also use Carbonite.

How do I get my 450 GB of files over to…

Brand New MacBook "Hangs" on web browsing

This was supposed to be a fast computer, but while I browse (Chrome) it hangs and the round Google Tab stops, with the whole machine completely unresponsive to any input from the keyboard or mouse. Then , about a minute later, all is forgotten and it works fine.

I got this machine days ago and it's happened at least 15 times over about 25 hours of use.

If I do not find an answer, this machine is going back to the store where I bought it.

It was on discount since the box was opened.

I really do not know what my next move would be.

Attached are the specs...

What processes could be used to identify either unused smartphone or tablet devices which have not communicated or synched with corporate systems and what tools can be used to enforce security controls on such devices.

We have a process for identifying stale laptpps which have no recent login in Ad but want sinilar from smartphones / tablets to ensure they havent been lost or stolen or that when an employee leaves the company they return devices and they are added to the stock room and redistributed as possible.

Also - what security controls do you enforce on mobile devices such as smartphone or tablet and how do you prevent users amending the security controls.

Easy question and just making sure they are 100% correct.
A visitor who will be here awhile has an Apple notebook and Apple phone.
They say wi-fi is only for their laptop and they use wi-fi for music and no internet with their phone. They are implying that their Apple phone can not access the internet. We do not believe them.

They use their laptop to transfer music to their phone and then use the phone to listen to music outside the home. The problem is they are using internet to all hours of the night. They think they can stop using the laptop at a certain hour per "rules" and only use their phone. Talking loudly on a laptop or phone is the same thing to us.

Every time I attempt to highlight text using my Magic Mouse, the mouse looses connection. Otherwise it acts normally (though is inclined to disconnect from time to time). This is a new problem.

Thanks.

Helping a friend that has mobility problems.

They have an HP OfficeJet 3830 (relatively new All in one printer).  They want to scan 8 1/2 x 11 pages and have them accessible on their ipad for viewing. I am most familiar with Dropbox.

A couple ways I came up with, but not the best - the first because of limited mobility problems, the 2nd because there's several steps and more likely something stops working?

1) the dropbox app on ipad lets you take pictures / scans of papers and makes PDFs.  But again, with the mobility issues, this would be too much for them.

2) set up a computer with the HP software and dropbox running on it.  They scan from the printer, it goes to the laptop. The folder that the scans go to would also be the dropbox folder, the files go up to the cloud, then back down to the ipad.  They do have a 'spare' laptop, but that would have to stay on all the time / on the LAN with the printer.  Doable, but a nuisance to have a PC dedicated just for this and inevitably, witih patches, reboots, etc.  something in the process will break at some point... am I jaded or a realist <g>?

Are there other ideas?  Looking for simple (in process and for mobility issues) and relatively low cost.

Are there other printers or even this one with scan to cloud capabilities?  IS there a way to scan from HP all in one to an ipad directly?

THANKS!

What are the shortcut keys or method that can be used on Mac OS X  High Sierra v. 10.13.3 computer to switch from displaying the standard Mac login screen (which displays the usernames & their icons as a list of users to logging on using a User Name and password (so a user can login with an Active Directory account)?

This is something that needs to be done before logging onto the Mac.

The option to display the login windows as: Name and password (instead of list of users) has already been selected (see the screenshot).

For whatever reason when this computer powers up it displays the logins as the list of users. These users are local administrator accounts that only IT should have access to; we don't want the users using or accessing local accounts. The users should only login using their Active Directory usernames and passwords.

So what are the shortcut keys or method that can be used on Mac OS X  High Sierra v. 10.13.3 computer to switch from displaying the standard Mac login screen (which displays the usernames & their icons as a list of users to logging on using a User Name and password (so a user can login with an Active Directory account)?

Let me know if any further information is needed.

setting up AirPort Time Capsule to only work as backup disk (and not as wifi router)

I want to use my Apple Time Capsule just as a network attached backup drive and not a router.

This what I have done:

(I got the following instructions off of apple.stackexchange.com)

To prevent the Time Capsule from acting as a WiFi access point or router, and use it only as a backup disk, just open the AirPort Utility app on a Mac (Applications -> Utilities -> AirPort Utility) and do the following:

1. Select your Time Capsule and hit Edit.
2. Go to the tab labeled Wireless
3. From the Network Mode pop-up menu, choose Off.
4. Click Update, and the base station will restart and load the new settings.

-  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -

OK. So I did all that. The AirPort Time Capsule restarted. But now the computer cannot find it when I go in to the AirPort Utility.

See screenshot:

Oh boy. So now what did I do?

I think that the instructions that I got from that website lead me on the wrong path.

Restoring from external drive onto different MacBook.

I replacing an old MacBook with a newer one, and expect to use TimeMachine to move my system.  Both machines have SSD's, the old one has a 500 GB and the newer one has a 1T SDD.

I assume I could:

1) Start a full backup
2) Got to bed
3) Begin restoring to the newer MacBook
4) Go to work

When I come home, I should be 100% up and running on the new Mac.

Does this make sense?

What do I need to know to restore the system onto the new MacBook?

Are there are reboots needed during installation? Might the unattended new machine go to sleep in the middle of this process?

What commands to I need to execute on the new machine?

Thanks.

What info needed to show on Ebay when I sell my MacBook?

How do I get the required information besides what is available in the Apple > About window?

I need info on my 500 GB SSD, since it is an older drive, purchased in 2012.

I also need to show the battery's ability to hold a load. How do I do that?

Thanks

How to move from MacBook 1 SDD to MacBook 2 SDD

I guess I cold make a fresh backup from MB1 and restore that drive to MB2. But I need to carefully track any changes on MB1 while that drive is restoring to MB2.

Is this the best way, though?

I can repeat the process, I presume...

What do you suggest?

Can I use a cable connecting the machines?

Thanks

Considering a Replacement MacBook

I may purchase a used MacBook Pro that I will use for Sales activities, and maybe some development.

I want the display to be goof for presentations and like the 1T disk of this machine:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-MacBook-Pro-15-INTEL-Core-PRE-RETINA-MacOS-2016-8GB-RAM-1TB-SSD-HYBRID/263448657297?hash=item3d56c37d91:g:Vd8AAOSwnlFabTq7

I need to port over data from my 500GB MacBook SSD, so how exactly do I do that? I back up my disk to four different external hard disks, so I presume I need to just restore from a current backup to the new machine. Is that the best way?

I also need to run Windows, which I do with Parallels, and sometimes may do some Windows development with Visual Studio. I presume this hardware cold do this reasonably?

Aside form this, are there any reasons you can suggest me getting a better machine? Can I upgrade the RAM to 16GB, for example?

Currently, I survive with a 13" MacBook from Mid-2012 and 8GB RAM, but it seems slow and often pops up the multi-colored wagon wheel icon as the processor can not keep up wth the request.

Thanks.

I'm having a lot of problems with both PCs and Macs being able to display their computers to the projector.

I'm looking for a simple solution that ALWAYS works, whether a MAC or A PC, where I can connect both via wireless/physical connection to a projector, or large screen TV, we currently have a projector, but I can replace it if necessary with a full 1080P, as it only support 720p.

Any ideas of the different products I would need to configure a rock solid system?

Currently I'm using an Aten VS-0202 switcher, with an apple TV, and the projector, and people constantly are having issues.

How can I replace all these with something that actually works?

I'm using Skype For Business 16.13.184 on Mac OS 10.13.2

We are testing out Skype for Business with our Office 365 Business Premium license and the first thing I noticed is I cannot paste an Image from the clipboard into the chat. I can Attach an Image, but thats more work if I'm sending screen shots.   Seems to work on Windows.

I will buy used on Ebay, for one. But I am not sure what memory/CPU speed options to consider.

I mostly use if for email, web browsing, but also program sometimes in Angular and even load Windows on Parallels. Sometimes, I do C#.NET development on Visual Studio on Windows.

So, I want a machine that can perform, but have been living with much older MacBook processors without terrible difficulty.

What do you suggest for value and performance?

Thanks

Hello guys, so I have this MacBook Air 11" (Early 2015) in my lab and the main user account is completely inaccessible.

Here's what happens: you input the password, the wheel starts turning and it never stops. After many minutes the password input interface reappears and it's a loop.

Now, I'm not a Mac expert, mostly because here in Italy they're very rare, so I get less than 10 of them a year. But I've always been able to fix them.

This time I've tried all the usual stuff: boot in safe mode, repair system drive, reset PRAM and the like.

Nothing seems to work. I have the option of making a clean reinstall, but the customer would like to recover her files first.

I usually remove the drive and insert it into a PC able to read Mac formatted drives, but this time it's an M.2 drive with proprietary connector and I have no adapter right now.

So can anybody suggest anything more? Thanks guys.
