Apple's early computers ran on a variety of operating systems, including a Pascal version and one based on CP/M, before releasing its ProDOS with the advent of its 16-bit computer. With the release of the Lisa, which had its own OS, Apple and computing entered the graphical age; it was followed by the Macintosh, which offered a series of "System" operating systems. Other Mac operating systems included PowerPC until Apple acquired NeXT and folded it into the Mac OS. Current operating systems for Apple devices are Mac OS-X and iOS.

What are the costs of converting back to Windows?

I love my Mac, but have how two bad buying experiences in the past couple weeks. I am now considering NOT spending a bunch of money getting some new PAC and just going back to Windows.

I have an iPhone and use iCloud for data sharing, but even that has had technical troubles, to be honest.  Apple ID has let me down with log in problems, even the Apple Care seems to have trouble getting to work.

Any advice on dumping the whole platform and just saving a lot of money?

I have an iPhone 7, and intend to keep that. But I am not a power user at all.

I really dislike Windows 10, though. At least when it shows me all this flashing junk in all these different windows.

The new MacBook I bought for $2,400, where I would need to spend another $375 for Apple Care, has this problem where the machine hangs on me. As I use Chrome, the whole machine freezes. That is an ugly issue where I would rather return the machine that try and debug it. Also, it's got all these fancy keyboard option, BUT only three hours of battery life. Just like I told the sales rep, those bells and whistles use up all the juice.

So, I am losing faith in the Mac brand. Anyone want to try and restore it?

Or, what brand and model of Windows machine might be interesting to consider as an alternative?

What kinds of file issues might I have? I have all my data on Time Machine backups. I also use Carbonite.

How do I get my 450 GB of files over to…

Brand New MacBook "Hangs" on web browsing

This was supposed to be a fast computer, but while I browse (Chrome) it hangs and the round Google Tab stops, with the whole machine completely unresponsive to any input from the keyboard or mouse. Then , about a minute later, all is forgotten and it works fine.

I got this machine days ago and it's happened at least 15 times over about 25 hours of use.

If I do not find an answer, this machine is going back to the store where I bought it.

It was on discount since the box was opened.

I really do not know what my next move would be.

Attached are the specs...

What is the best way to do this...Parallels or Boot Camp?   Is there anything  I should be careful with when trying
to do this?

Hi -

I have a client who recently had their Apple mail app crash and i needed to update to High Sierra to sort it because the mail folders had got too large to make it worthwhile to do a Time Machine restore.
The client now has all email accounts back but the messages only go back to last week (despite being on IMAP i dont think it was set to save much on the server).
They have asked if i can restore the emails from 2017 from some of the archives that were made at the end of 2017.
I did not make the archives so i had to search for them. I found a folder with the heading archives 2017 but the folders are several, totaling to 22GB but the one folder called archive.mbox is only 2 GB. The largest one i could find has a long name which does not initially make any sense. I have attached a screenshot.
I have initiated an  import of the folder but being being so large i will have to wait a while before i know if it is the correct one. Could someone explain to me why these folders are created and named in such a way if the secretary who did the archive i assume followed the correct procedure. Why isn't there just one MBOX file?

Thanks

My wife and I both have iPhone 6S phones.  Recently my battery usage has failed to take me through even half a day.   I compared my battery usage to my wife's (she doesn't have the problem).  My phone shows 47% "Home and Lock Screen" usage, by far more than the next most power-hungry app (Messages= 12%).   My wife's phone shows only 4% for "Home and Lock Screen", but I can't figure out what on my phone is accounting for the vastly higher usage.  Our Brightness and Auto-Lock settings seem the same.  What else can account for this?

Thanks,

Phil

What are the shortcut keys or method that can be used on Mac OS X  High Sierra v. 10.13.3 computer to switch from displaying the standard Mac login screen (which displays the usernames & their icons as a list of users to logging on using a User Name and password (so a user can login with an Active Directory account)?

This is something that needs to be done before logging onto the Mac.

The option to display the login windows as: Name and password (instead of list of users) has already been selected (see the screenshot).

For whatever reason when this computer powers up it displays the logins as the list of users. These users are local administrator accounts that only IT should have access to; we don't want the users using or accessing local accounts. The users should only login using their Active Directory usernames and passwords.

So what are the shortcut keys or method that can be used on Mac OS X  High Sierra v. 10.13.3 computer to switch from displaying the standard Mac login screen (which displays the usernames & their icons as a list of users to logging on using a User Name and password (so a user can login with an Active Directory account)?

Let me know if any further information is needed.

A user with a Mac OS X computer says that he doesn't have the option to login to his Mac whenever this Mac is outside of our office. This Mac has all of the latest Mac updates installed.

This Mac is joined to our Server 2016 Active Directory domain and the user logs onto the Mac using his Active Directory account. Our local area network is using an IP subnet of 172.16.0.0.

I have set the Mac so that it prompts the user to login with his account name and password.

This user says that whenever he is outside of our office the only options he has is to login to a local Admin account that I have created our to login using the guest user account.

Is there a keystroke combination (similar to CTRL-ALT-DEL on a Windows computer) the user can press to switch back to the username and password login option rather than the user clicking on the account name he would like to login with?

Also since the user is outside of the office and we don't have a VPN setup will the user be able to login with his Active Directory username and password even though the Mac won't be able to contact the Active Directory domain controller?

Restoring from external drive onto different MacBook.

I replacing an old MacBook with a newer one, and expect to use TimeMachine to move my system.  Both machines have SSD's, the old one has a 500 GB and the newer one has a 1T SDD.

I assume I could:

1) Start a full backup
2) Got to bed
3) Begin restoring to the newer MacBook
4) Go to work

When I come home, I should be 100% up and running on the new Mac.

Does this make sense?

What do I need to know to restore the system onto the new MacBook?

Are there are reboots needed during installation? Might the unattended new machine go to sleep in the middle of this process?

What commands to I need to execute on the new machine?

Thanks.

A company I am working at has Mac laptops that all have local user logon accounts.

We have added a Server 2016 domain controller and the users will now be signing onto Active Directory to log in to their Macs.

What utilities or methods are available to migrate all current settings and data from these user's local Mac logon accounts into their new Server 2016 domain logon profiles on these Macs?

Does Apple have any utilities that enable the browsing of Mac OS X backups to view which folders and files are backed up  and to do things such as perform manual restores of Apple OS backups to original or alternate locations which a Mac admin can perform from a centralized location rather than having to do this from each individual Mac user's machine?

My organization has several Mac OS X laptops which are all backed up using Time Machine to a Network Attached Storage device (NAS).

We are interested in any centralized management solutions for administering the Time Machine backups if possible.

What info needed to show on Ebay when I sell my MacBook?

How do I get the required information besides what is available in the Apple > About window?

I need info on my 500 GB SSD, since it is an older drive, purchased in 2012.

I also need to show the battery's ability to hold a load. How do I do that?

Thanks

What to do about possible apple based hack - An iPhone 6, an iPhone 7, an iPhone X, an iPad AirLight, and a Macbook Air

These were under the same iCloud password, which has been changed since.

Symptoms:

1. When it started, the owner was using his MacBook Air and all of a sudden he lost control and files started moving around and then deleting themselves as if he was being remotely accessed. When it was done, he went into his contacts and there was only one contact left. He restored his devices, and watched for other symptoms.

2. Messages keep going across the screen on the iPhone X, like foreign languages along with the words "delete a" and ",". When he tries to find these messages they are nowhere to be found.

3. Other messages being sent to the devices and then automatically deleting themselves. Some of these messages involved the people he thinks were involved.

... along with some general strange behavior that we're doing updates and cleanup with to make sure they're not related.

He has an idea who might have done it, they have been contacting him and they are a shady character. They haven't admitted anything. The owner's concerned he's still hacked, and he wants to find out who did it and clean up the situation. He is under a secure, hidden network in a remote location and isn't sure if his network has been compromised. We've updated all the devices to the most current iOS, and took off any shady programs. We ran malwarebytes on everything and …

Restoring Windows after reboot,  like my beloved Mac does...

I shut down my Mac, and on restart, everything it the way I left it. Can't Windows 10 do the same thing?

What a pain!

I need to shut my PC each night, otherwise would consider leaving it running.

Thanks

Hello guys, so I have this MacBook Air 11" (Early 2015) in my lab and the main user account is completely inaccessible.

Here's what happens: you input the password, the wheel starts turning and it never stops. After many minutes the password input interface reappears and it's a loop.

Now, I'm not a Mac expert, mostly because here in Italy they're very rare, so I get less than 10 of them a year. But I've always been able to fix them.

This time I've tried all the usual stuff: boot in safe mode, repair system drive, reset PRAM and the like.

Nothing seems to work. I have the option of making a clean reinstall, but the customer would like to recover her files first.

I usually remove the drive and insert it into a PC able to read Mac formatted drives, but this time it's an M.2 drive with proprietary connector and I have no adapter right now.

So can anybody suggest anything more? Thanks guys.
