Microsoft Azure is a cloud computing platform and infrastructure for building, deploying and managing applications and services through datacenters. It provides both platform-as-a-service (PaaS) and infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) services and supports many different programming languages, tools and frameworks, including both Microsoft-specific and third-party software and systems. Cloud Services is a PaaS environment and can be used to create scalable applications and services; there are specific software development kits (SDKs) provided by Microsoft for Python, Java, Node.js and .NET. Azure also has file and storage services, data management, analytics and DNS services.

What are some good heuristics when considering the ratio of total Guest vCPUs to Host Physical Cores(ignoring HT/SMT); 2:1, 3:1?
The more involved followup might be how to measure core contention on a Hyper-V Host

Also when does core count matter more vs frequency, I guess the answer is workload dependent.

Microsoft used to have a set of values for VM counts depending on processor core count and GHz. Those recommendations have essentially been sidelined due to the fact that CPU is pretty much not the bottleneck anymore.

That being said, we go for GHz before core count as a rule because it's just that much faster to get the smaller vCPU count VM's threads through the CPU pipeline.

And finally, a wide core count would indeed be needed for multi-threaded applications like SQL to get through the pipeline as soon and as wide as possible.

Simulator games are perfect for generating sample realistic data streams, especially for learning data analysis. It is even useful for demoing offerings such as Azure stream analytics, PowerBI etc.

I would add that you REALLY SHOULD store snapshots on a separate volume. The reason is that Windows may DELETE your snapshots stored with the parent volume during high disk IO. Imagine you have a large restore to do on your file server, so you do a smaller test restore first. It works, but the act of restoring creates so much IO that the other snapshots get deleted...the same snapshots you were about to use to restore from. Ouch! I have heard about it happening. It's the first best practice Microsoft lists.

"BUT WAIT! Before enabling, if you want to place your copies on a different volume or better still different physical disk (recommended for heavily used file servers), you need to click on the settings button before any copies are created (enabling a volume will instantly create a copy)."

Nice piece of info Geeta, but to export PST files to Office 365, one can use Microsoft azure method. It is definitely a time consuming process but a option if needed.

Alternately Kernel Import PST to Office 365 is available to migrate healthy PST & OST files (any number) with no size limit to Cloud based Office 365 at a very lost cost of $49 single user license only. Many of the companies I’ve worked with have embraced cloud solutions due to their desire to “get out of the datacenter business.” The ability to achieve better security and availability, and the speed with which they are able to deploy, is far greater than traditional on-prem options.


During and after that shift to cloud, though, one area that still poses a struggle for many organizations is what to do with their department file shares.  I’m sure you’re thinking “there are all kinds of solutions,” and most of them are far better than a traditional network share.  I’d agree with you; however, many organizations have a workforce that is accustomed to this old process.  While solutions like SharePoint, One Drive for Business, and Dropbox are nice and have additional features, most organizations still prefer the Windows file share.  


One solution that holds promise is Microsoft’s Azure File Services.  The offering was originally intended to enable companies to move applications that interacted with file shares to Azure, and it was only accessible from Virtual Machines within the same Azure data center when it was first released.  But last year Microsoft released an update that leverages SMB 3.0 and enables users to securely connect to the shares from any location.


There are some limitations if you’re looking to deploy Azure File Services within your organization.  The biggest that I found was that not all internet service providers (ISPs), such as Comcast and Charter Spectrum, will allow port 45 access across their networks.  (Here is a list of known ISPs that do and don’t block this.)


The other major limitation at this time is while you can assign Azure AD permissions to the share, when a user connects, they have to authenticate with the Azure Storage Account and key. This requirement means that everyone is authenticating with the same account.  Microsoft is aware this is a short-coming and is supposed to be addressing it in the future with an update to the service.


These two limitations aside, I see the service being useful for organizations that need to archive data and only allow access from a limited number of individuals or systems.  As Azure storage is a low-cost retention solution, the data at rest can easily be encrypted with Azure encryption services.

If you’d like to try Azure File Services for yourself, follow these steps:

Go to the Azure management portal and log in with your account.


Make sure when naming the resource to use all lower case letters (this is a Microsoft Configuration requirement).  For Account Kind, make sure to select “General Purpose.” For our demo we’ll be using Standard performance disks and Geo-redundant Storage.  We’ve also enabled Encryption to show you how easy this function is.


Once the storage account has been created, browse to it and under File Service click Files. You see a sub screen and the Create File Share Button: click it, give your file share a name, specify how large you’d like it to be, and click Create.


Congratulations – you’ve just created your first Azure File Share.  But wait! You’re asking, “How do I connect to this file share?”


If you click on Connect it will give you the command syntax to connect from either a Windows or a Linux machine.  Remember, your ISP may be blocking port 445.  However once you do connect you can upload files and interact like a normal file share. 


Look for future updates from Microsoft on this feature to add additional security and the ability to assign individualized permissions based on Azure AD accounts.

Is this the end of IT management tools?
Or at least that’s the word according to a new blog from Tech Target on AWS’s new Managed Services (MS) offering. According to the blog, AWS is launching their AWS MS program to expedite the adoption of cloud by Fortune 1000 and Global 2000 companies. The article published last week notes AWS’ belief that companies want:
 

[T]o add additional automation, make use of standard components that can be used more than once, and to relieve their staff of as many routine operational duties as possible.


Further explanation is provided in AWS’ announcement of their new product which they claim is designed to take over system monitoring, incident management, change control provisioning and patch management. Indeed, these are usually functions that fall under the auspices of IT Ops. And as the Tech Target article goes on to note:


After all of this, the only ones left standing could be application developers, despite — or thanks to — Amazon’s vast array of development tools.


So, if we follow AWS’s logic, we might think that they have sunk their claws into the whole IT management life-cycle. The question then becomes, has AWS set the stakes for IT management to meet its maker? Ummmm, not so fast, Cowboy.
