CAD/Architecture Software

Computer-aided design (CAD) is the use of computer systems to aid in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design. CAD output is often in the form of electronic files for print, machining, or other manufacturing operations. CAD software for mechanical design uses either vector-based graphics to depict the objects of traditional drafting, or may also produce raster graphics showing the overall appearance of designed objects. As in the manual drafting of technical and engineering drawings, the output of CAD must convey information, such as materials, processes, dimensions, and tolerances, according to application-specific conventions.

User wants to get a laptop to use with AutoCad.

I looked at BestBuy, and saw the following specs:

HP - OMEN by HP 17.3" Laptop -
Intel Core i7 -
12GB Memory -
AMD Radeon RX 580 -
1TB Hard Drive

Is the Radeon RX 580 acceptable for AutoCad?

Thanks.

I have been asked to develop a prototype hand tool control system for our maintenance engineers using 2 coloured closed cell foam. Apparently the foam can be machined on a cnc mill with the right cutter. My problem is, I want a dxf file of the outline of each tool to load into my cam software. I have been unable to find existing drawings online, so I need to make my own. Does anyone know the best way to do this?. Should I scan them (I have a flatbed scanner and a 3d scanner), or photograph them. which file format should I save the images in? and then how do I convert these images into dxf's. I have spaceclaim 2015 and rhino 5 but no real 2d cad software. Is there something that can convert a scan to a vector outline?
thanks

Dear EE experts,

Good day!
Apologize if we don't know how to explain the subject clearly, we would like to ask for tech advise support on what is the best software program that we can use for our requirement project (simple animate program).
Here's what we would want to happen:
- a software that will show the list of our products (small image only)
- after clicking one product, the image has different parts that can be clicked, including the removing of the product's cover (so the user can see what are the assemblies inside of it.
- inside, will show the parts, and when the user hover to one part, it will show some info such as Date updated, what are the update of it.

Basically, we want it to be animated a bit...

Thank you and hope to hear soon...

We are looking for the best application to measure and make annotations on PDFs for workers we have in the field with tablets/laptops in the field.
We have in the past used Adobe Acrobat, AutoDesk DWG TruView and AutoDesk Design Review but we wanted to see if there is something better?

Any help would be appreciated.

I am creating a drawing register for Revit families in excel, the files are sorted into specific names, ie. electrical, plumbing etc.
My question, is it possible to make the 'sub document names' hidden until the 'title' cell is clicked, for example i want a cell saying 'electrical' with 15-20 hidden document names under that to become visible if you click on electrical or even a down arrow next to it.

Is anyone here using AutoDesk Vault and if so, how are you backing up your Vault instance(s)? I am told that AutoDesk only recommends a particular backup solution (Symantec I think) but we're getting ready to move the Vault instance over from a standalone physical box to a VM. I would really prefer (after the migration) to back it up using Veeam along with all our other VMs in our vCenter. However, because Vault uses a SQL backend, I have been told that I may want to also do something specifically with the individual SQL databases in addition to our normal backup ... and that this may very well be the reason why AutoDesk recommends a specific backup solution for it. So I need to know how others are doing it.

In addition, we would love to be able to share certain files stored in our AutoDesk Vault with a partner or two and we are not quite sure how to even approach that, so if anyone on here has any experience in using the AutoDesk Vault product and sharing Vault files from it, it would also be great to hear how you guys do it.

I have a client who everything was working hunky dory using AutoDesk Design review 2013, then when she tried to open a .DWF file like she does every day, AutoDesk Design Review 2013 crashes.

Since I can't find the 2013 download, I went to AutoDesk Design and downloaded the 2018 version from here: https://www.autodesk.com/products/design-review/download
I also downloaded TrueView from here: https://www.autodesk.com/products/dwg/viewers
So she can edit the files.  Still, the 2018 version crashes just like the 2013

I also turned off Carbonite and Microsoft Security Essentials individually to try to isolate it either one as a potential problem but no luck.

*Keep in mind the Design Review opens without any issue. It's just when you double click on any .DWF file saved on her computer (which would open before)

Design Review Crash
Facts:
>Windows 7 64 Pro
>16GB RAM
>1TB Samsung SSD
>Windows Security Essentials (security)
>Carbonite Backup

We have been battling engineering / CAD software performance problems and observe that this software starts and runs significantly faster when logged in as Domain Administrator OR local Administrator, than it does as any other Domain user.  The software is SolidWorks 2015.
We have checked many obvious things so far such as Group Policy settings (or lack there-of, so non-policy).  Has anyone encountered anything similar?  Thanks.

when you are working with Autocad and suddenly it goes on grid format.
you try to copy your geometry but it gets placed in grid coordinate.
you check your grid in settings and its off...
the trick is to press F9!

Hello Experts - I am looking for software that will allow us to setup custom internal training on AutoCAD and Revit.  We're just now starting to look at various way to do this so I'm not sure I'm going in the right direction yet.  I've seen software in the past where a trainer sets up a session for a specific task in the software but can't recall the name.  A video captures the steps and the user then has to go into the training software and replicate the same steps.  Mouse clicks are captured and the user must follow the same steps in order to proceed to the next lesson.  I would very much appreciate any recommendations on this or other training software that we might use for our intern architects.

One of our employees use AutoCAD (version 2013 or 14 I believe), and sometimes he will have problems connecting to the activation server (powered by LMtools) whenever he is in the office or connected via VPN at a job site.  I restart the activation service, and he can connect to the activation server without problems, but sometimes I would have to fiddle around with the activation server until he can connect to the server, and I can successfully ping to the server, so there must be a persisting problem with the activation service/program.  Does anyone out there have any insight as to of why this problem keeps occurring?

Can any one recommend a free CAD viewer which also allows for very simple editing (just adding labels).  It needs to be able to read dwg files.

Thanks for the help

Dears,

I am to setup a new office network (1 Server + 5 stations) for new company that is in the CAD business.

They are very much security oriented and their requirements are quite strict.

What is the best way to have a closed down environment ?

These are the constraints I have to "abide by"

1-CAD files should not be able to taken out from the company
2-CAD files are usually big files (300MB / 500MB sometimes more)
3-Users should be able to access their files remotely (VPN/RDP) when travelling
4-Users that use their PC have nothing stored on their PC and CAN NOT save anything on their PC

A normal setup with Windows Server and having the files on the servers does not seem to be enough for me.
A user can open the file that is located on the server and then select save as and save it on his local drive.
Locking down his local drive can lead to problems such as not being able to open his email, write a doc, etc...

On the other side, having them remotely connecting to the Server , I am not sure that applications like AutoCAD, PTC Creo ..etc.. can be opened from a server... they require a high end VGA cards.

What to do ?

I am trying to install autocad 2014 with a network license. When I enter the server IP address I get a message saying you entered the name of a server that does not exist or is currently unavailable on the network.

I can ping the server and I can get to the server through windows explorer. Not sure what the issue is? Any help would be appreciated!

I bought a laptop so I can run autocad 2017. It came with Windows 7 Pro but I could upgrade to windows 10 if I want to. My question is there any big difference between using windows 7 pro 64bit with autocad 2017 or using Windows 10 64bit with autocad 2017? Would I get better performance with one or the other? Just wondering what people would recommend?

I am looking to find a good laptop that can run autocad. I have a budget of about $1000 give or take. I have been looking around for a little bit and came across this laptop

 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-envy-17-3-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive-natural-silver/5617100.p?skuId=5617100

It seems to have some pretty good specs for the price. Just wanted a second opinion on how well you think this laptop could run autocad 2d and 3d modeling. If anyone has some recommendations that would be great as well!

Hi Gigs,

I work as ELV sytem designer. Everyday i need to count the data points , ip phones etc from the futnither layout drawings mostly from autocad drawing or sometimes from pdf drawing also.

The problem is that those object are not defined with specific properties, so they apear just as images on the drawings. I have attached the snap of sample drawing.

In the drawing i have put two box in magenta/purple color , one is showing square around the chair , so i can count how many users are there, second is around a table for the conference so to count no. of conference phones. This is just an example to understand my requirement.

What i am looking for is that i select a particular image and i want to know how many of the same images are available on this drawing , i mean the count of that image....

so how many instances of the chairs on the drawing thats what i want to know...

appreciate if you gigs can help me to know exacts steps to count this...

Thanks....

We are receiving the following error in AutoCAD 2017 3D Imperial after just installing it "Unhandled Exception C0000005 (access violation writing 0x0000) at address DB5416B3h".

We have run a repair, checked for a virus, installed AutoCAD SP1 for it, checked the video driver and checked the compatibility version for it and nothing has worked. We can bypass the error but we would like to properly "fix" the issue.

Any assistance offered would be greatly appreciated.
