CAD/Architecture Software

Computer-aided design (CAD) is the use of computer systems to aid in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design. CAD output is often in the form of electronic files for print, machining, or other manufacturing operations. CAD software for mechanical design uses either vector-based graphics to depict the objects of traditional drafting, or may also produce raster graphics showing the overall appearance of designed objects. As in the manual drafting of technical and engineering drawings, the output of CAD must convey information, such as materials, processes, dimensions, and tolerances, according to application-specific conventions.

Dear EE experts,

Good day!
Apologize if we don't know how to explain the subject clearly, we would like to ask for tech advise support on what is the best software program that we can use for our requirement project (simple animate program).
Here's what we would want to happen:
- a software that will show the list of our products (small image only)
- after clicking one product, the image has different parts that can be clicked, including the removing of the product's cover (so the user can see what are the assemblies inside of it.
- inside, will show the parts, and when the user hover to one part, it will show some info such as Date updated, what are the update of it.

Basically, we want it to be animated a bit...

Thank you and hope to hear soon...

We are looking for the best application to measure and make annotations on PDFs for workers we have in the field with tablets/laptops in the field.
We have in the past used Adobe Acrobat, AutoDesk DWG TruView and AutoDesk Design Review but we wanted to see if there is something better?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Experts - I am looking for software that will allow us to setup custom internal training on AutoCAD and Revit.  We're just now starting to look at various way to do this so I'm not sure I'm going in the right direction yet.  I've seen software in the past where a trainer sets up a session for a specific task in the software but can't recall the name.  A video captures the steps and the user then has to go into the training software and replicate the same steps.  Mouse clicks are captured and the user must follow the same steps in order to proceed to the next lesson.  I would very much appreciate any recommendations on this or other training software that we might use for our intern architects.

Can any one recommend a free CAD viewer which also allows for very simple editing (just adding labels).  It needs to be able to read dwg files.

Thanks for the help

Dears,

I am to setup a new office network (1 Server + 5 stations) for new company that is in the CAD business.

They are very much security oriented and their requirements are quite strict.

What is the best way to have a closed down environment ?

These are the constraints I have to "abide by"

1-CAD files should not be able to taken out from the company
2-CAD files are usually big files (300MB / 500MB sometimes more)
3-Users should be able to access their files remotely (VPN/RDP) when travelling
4-Users that use their PC have nothing stored on their PC and CAN NOT save anything on their PC

A normal setup with Windows Server and having the files on the servers does not seem to be enough for me.
A user can open the file that is located on the server and then select save as and save it on his local drive.
Locking down his local drive can lead to problems such as not being able to open his email, write a doc, etc...

On the other side, having them remotely connecting to the Server , I am not sure that applications like AutoCAD, PTC Creo ..etc.. can be opened from a server... they require a high end VGA cards.

What to do ?

I am trying to install autocad 2014 with a network license. When I enter the server IP address I get a message saying you entered the name of a server that does not exist or is currently unavailable on the network.

I can ping the server and I can get to the server through windows explorer. Not sure what the issue is? Any help would be appreciated!

I bought a laptop so I can run autocad 2017. It came with Windows 7 Pro but I could upgrade to windows 10 if I want to. My question is there any big difference between using windows 7 pro 64bit with autocad 2017 or using Windows 10 64bit with autocad 2017? Would I get better performance with one or the other? Just wondering what people would recommend?

I am looking to find a good laptop that can run autocad. I have a budget of about $1000 give or take. I have been looking around for a little bit and came across this laptop

 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-envy-17-3-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive-natural-silver/5617100.p?skuId=5617100

It seems to have some pretty good specs for the price. Just wanted a second opinion on how well you think this laptop could run autocad 2d and 3d modeling. If anyone has some recommendations that would be great as well!

Hi Gigs,

I work as ELV sytem designer. Everyday i need to count the data points , ip phones etc from the futnither layout drawings mostly from autocad drawing or sometimes from pdf drawing also.

The problem is that those object are not defined with specific properties, so they apear just as images on the drawings. I have attached the snap of sample drawing.

In the drawing i have put two box in magenta/purple color , one is showing square around the chair , so i can count how many users are there, second is around a table for the conference so to count no. of conference phones. This is just an example to understand my requirement.

What i am looking for is that i select a particular image and i want to know how many of the same images are available on this drawing , i mean the count of that image....

so how many instances of the chairs on the drawing thats what i want to know...

appreciate if you gigs can help me to know exacts steps to count this...

Thanks....

We are receiving the following error in AutoCAD 2017 3D Imperial after just installing it "Unhandled Exception C0000005 (access violation writing 0x0000) at address DB5416B3h".

We have run a repair, checked for a virus, installed AutoCAD SP1 for it, checked the video driver and checked the compatibility version for it and nothing has worked. We can bypass the error but we would like to properly "fix" the issue.

Any assistance offered would be greatly appreciated.

or better to stay with 2015 version

2) will 2017 autocad, civil 3d files are compatible with older versions like 2015 ,2016

I´m designing a service layer in a multilayerd architecture (Service, Business, Dao). Suposse I need a method like getUserAccounts

This method just return a list of Accounts, but what if my dao layer can´t connect to database, or if I have some error when reading the recorset, a parse problem for example. Or maybe another error in the business layer.

Do I have to catch the exception in the service layer, and map to a error code?
Do I have to catch the exception in the business layer, and the buisness layer return a bean with the error code? Avoiding to have any kind of logic in the service layer, more than exposing the Rest API

Hi, this small business is growing at a pretty good rate.  Therefore, we have a lot of standalone licenses.  Can we take those licenses and place them on a license server to manage the autocad environment?  What are the steps?  Just read this article for license installation issues.  I'm just thinking there's got to be a better way to manage these license issues.

We have a client that has a mixture of Autocad versions 2011 - 2016
For some reason at random times everyone's Autocad slows down (ie panning and zooming or editing)
Access to the file server is not slowing down, but the program itself gets very laggy.
All the users are using different files.

I have a question regarding performance and how game engines handle mesh objects. – For the purpose of this question, let’s assume we have a wall asset within a game. If we make our wall 10 feet tall and 100 feet long, we have a rectangle, which can be made up of two large triangles.

So, our first example is a wall that is 10 feet tall X 100 feet long and is made up of 2 triangles.

Let’s now assume we broke up that same wall into smaller 10 foot sections (i.e. 10 feet tall X 10 feet long each).

So, in our second example we have our 100 foot long wall made up of 10 individual sections, which are each 10' x 10' made up or 2 triangles each, so our 100 foot wall now contains 20 triangles.

In recap:
Example 1 = A wall, 10 feet tall X 100 feet long and is made up of 2 triangles.

Example 2 = A wall made up of 10 sections, each at 10 feet tall x10 feet long and each section is made up or 2 triangles, so our wall has a total of 20 triangles.

My question is which of these designs approaches to our wall is more memory intensive for the game engine to deliver to the scene?

Is it more expensive (in terms of memory resources) to draw 2 very large triangles. Or, is it more expensive to draw 20 much smaller triangles?

Or are they equivalent…after all, we’re producing the same asset which is 10 feet tall and 100 feet long? The only difference is that in one instance we're drawing 2 huge triangles and in the other we're drawing 20 much …

Hi,

I was just wondering if it is possible to use applications like 3D Max, Photoshop or Autocad using a single license hosting on a server through Remote Desktop Services from multiple desktops ? If YES then what would be the hardware/software requirement on server side.

Hi,

I recently built a new workstation to run Autocad 2017.  It has an Intel I7-6700K 4.0 Ghz cpu, Kingston 32 GB memory on a MSI Z170A m/b running Windows 10 Pro.

I ran a rendering base test with the example house in Revit; that took 31 minutes. I then installed a Quadro K4000 graphics card with 3gb memory on it, loaded the drivers from Nvidia's site and reran the test.  The time was the same, and the Intel CPU was maxed out during that period.

I was expecting some difference.  What am I missing?

Thanks!
