Cell Phones

A cellular phone (also known as a mobile phone, cell phone, hand phone, or simply a phone) is a telephone that can make and receive telephone calls over a radio link while moving around a wide geographic area by connecting to a cellular network provided by a mobile phone operator, allowing access to the public telephone network. Mobile phones that offer services such as text messaging, email, Internet access, business applications, gaming, photography and more general computing capabilities are referred to as smartphones.

Phone Battery Life
Subject of the week | Describe past technologies you miss.
Here's something I miss: good battery life on my mobile phone. I remember my old Nokia cell phones and how I'd get to measure battery life in days. Those things could go a week straight with no charging needed! Whereas my iPhone pretty much needs to be charged nightly. Granted, I still think the extra capabilities are a good trade-off, but I keep hoping we can manage to get battery tech improved to the point where modern smartphones can have battery life comparable to older cell phones.

Think we'll get there, or will the demands of smartphone power usage keep increasing such that battery life continues to stay put?

My first was a Nokia and that thing could manage to go 5 days without a charge. It could even play Snake! Sure, I still wouldn't go back to that over my iPhone, but don't you think an iPhone with more than 2 days life would be nice? Imagine not having to take chargers with you for weekend trips!

It would be nice for sure but it has never happened.

I can get by with just a USB cable because my ThinkPad now and the one before (spare) have always ON USB ports so I can carry a 45-watt AC adapter (tiny adapter) and charge both my laptop and phone.

On average, how many apps do you download a month? If your answer is "zero," you're with the majority.

I'm also curious to see how people feel about the top apps used by age range. For my bracket, I regularly use 5 out of the top 8 on my phone, but tend to have a lot more apps installed on my tablet.

I download tons of them so couldn't say with any accuracy how many a month.. but (and that's a big BUT) how long those apps get to stay on my device is a totally different story :)

I'm a bit of a gadget freak, so if I see something on the Apple App Store for my iPhone or Ipad that catches my eye for some reason, I'm highly likely to download and check it out. That said, unless I think I'll be using it very often, it generally won't last on my device for longer than 30 to 60 minutes as my curiosity about it would have been satisfied.  I currently have about a dozen apps I frequently use on my iPhone.. a few more on my iPad.  The most used app on both would have to be Audible Listener (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/audible-audio-books-original-series-podcasts/id379693831?mt=8) App because I'm an avid audio book listener and I buy > 90% of the books I own from audible.com

The next app that will probably get used a lot is Transcend's "JetDrive Go" which gives me lots of options for the JetDrive 128GB additional storage iPhone/USB stick I recently purchased. Movies and audio books tend to take up a LOT of space and yes, my phone is already a 128 GB model 7 .. if they came larger than that I'd have definitely bought that instead. I'm always running low on space! lol :)

When looking for a particular type software to do something I'll probably download 5 or 6 if not more, but most will be deleted within 5 minutes
Apart from that in general maybe 1 a month on average. Generally speaking I know the app I'm looking to download be it a bank app, radio app or whatever.
Now when it comes to games, different story, downloaded so many to be just disappointed by what they are - try Temple Run, frustratingly annoying game but addictive (probably shouldn't be plugging it but it's free)

If you haven't switched to the latest plan with your carrier, you might be overpaying / being gouged.  Earlier this year I investigated what Verizon had to offer and found out I was paying waaaay too much money.  After collaborating with family members we got 5 of us signed up under one plan and are saving hundreds of dollars a month now.  Family plans save $$$ folks.  And the plan differences between each carrier are not that drastic either.  Verizon and AT&T reign supreme.  Yes, more money, but you have superior service over the cheaper carriers.  Whoever is your carrier, do yourself a favor and take the time to see if you're overpaying and switch plans asap.

I think we're paying about $150 for 3 phones on the unlimited plan, but I'd have to double check.  We could be on some old pricing promo, too.

I think AT&T was also advocating for Net Neutrality's removal, but they didn't spend anywhere near as much as Verizon and Comcast.

I usually don't stream videos unless I'm on wifi.  I did this a lot when I didn't have Verizon's Unlimited plan.  Old habits die hard I guess.  I like how this was phrased
But this plan led to more pressure on the network and increased costs. So the company had to do something to turn this great consumer-friendly idea into a viable business venture.
ohshi we messed up and now its costing us too much money!!!! Can we take this back!?  Oh yes, of course we can, we're Verizon and we tell everyone how it is like big cable companies.

Personally, I've loved having the notifications. Even when I mostly do things via the web interface on my laptop, getting the notification on the phone (which will even forward to my watch) has been great! Easily my favorite part. :-)

I talked to Verizon today.  They have me doing the strangest work around to an error I'm encountering through their website.  There is an error displaying when I'm completing an action by trying to transfer other phone lines into my account.  This is generated in an email that is sent to me.  So, to fix what I'm running into, they sent me 4 of the same email and said "try one email link each hour until it works.  Our server should be up by then.  If that still doesn't work, then call us back."

Yeah...

LOL. How silly. Giving you busy work, so that you feel they're doing something for you. Hopefully they get a fix in place soon.

I ended up having to call again. :|

The people who helped me this time realized I'd been put through enough and they had it resolved in a half hour.  So I'm all setup and saving more money on my monthly bill...and I have unlimited data...FINALLY.
