Cloud computing, also known as on-demand computing, is a kind of Internet-based computing where shared resources and information are provided to computers and other devices. It is a model for enabling ubiquitous, on-demand access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources. Cloud computing and storage solutions provide users and enterprises with various capabilities to store and process their data in third-party data centers, relying on sharing of resources to achieve coherence and economies of scale.

I have a very fundamental question, Can I build a cloud infrastructure with Open Source Technologies. Does the concept of Open Source Cloud exists...??? If so how can a cloud of that kind be built.

Hi,

Are there any alternatives to the now discontinued Google Talk client?
I don't like the in built client in Gmail and the Google Talk native client doesn't support group chat.

Are there any options for Google Apps users that have not enabled Hangouts and have not set up the XMPP DNS records?

Thanks.

Where can I get the download for Windows Azure Tools for Visual Studio 2010?
We would like the 2.1 release if we can find it.
We've been googling around and have yet to find it.

Thanks,

I have a production web server with many sites on it, like www.foo.com. I have a development server with IIS6. For testing  foo.com I have set up a site and assigned it a distinct IP address. Seems like I should be able to browse to the test site at http://216.27.xxx.xxx. But instead I get "This page cannot be displayed".

Google Chrome connects to it fine.

But if I connect to the test server with my VPN I can now browse to the web site by IP address with IE11.

I have inherited a couple small business clients.  They all have small single domain controller servers running windows 2000 server still. They have moved most things to the cloud to keep from having to buy new hardware/software/networks as they are small and cannot justify the costs and support.  They have asked me if there is a way to replace their old domain controllers with the cloud as well or some form of appliance.
Has anyone come up with such a solution?  I have not seen a true cloud based DC/AD solution that did not require an onsite DC. I have also not seen an appliance that could do this yet. I know of several appliances that will allow you to setup local users on it or connect to an existing DC/AD but not any that provided basic DC/AD services for user auth/control, etc.  Anyone seen anything?  Thanks.

Our company is separating form it's parent company and (as an interim measure) we are moving to an Azure SharePoint environment. It will be the same environment as our old one (SP2007 on Win2008) but we need to get licensing as our agreement is staying with parent company.  Can we get temporary licensing for 6 months or similar or how best do we do this. Is this simply a case of chatting with Microsoft or has anyone any experiences?

CELLULAR / BROADBAND CONNECTIVITY ISSUES

I have a river house in the panhandle of FL. It’s only accessible by boat. It’s along the edge of a river with thick / dense trees and wetlands. The trees are very large with thick vegetation and leaves as well as being very tall…

Cellphone service down there is very spotty at best. Sometimes you can get a text message to go through. Better service in the winter months when there is less foliage. I have spent a lot of time and money purchasing BDA’s, both 800/1900 Mhz combo’s as well as single 65db 800Mhz / 1900 Mhz amplifiers.

I have placed them at the highest point of the property with antenna masts that still don’t come close to reaching over the tops of the trees. I have used yagi and omni directional antennas. I have worked with both Wilson and Cellphone Mate engineers to verify the equipment was installed correctly and to maximize the systems effectiveness.

I have used antenna search websites and Google maps to verify and locate my nearest cellphone site, approximately 10 miles by the way the crow flies, to make sure I was pointing the yagis in the correct direction.

I have had no luck trying to work with Verizon engineers…I have tried to open tickets with them to discuss possibilities with absolutely no luck. No calls. No emails.

The house is in a remote location. There are other houses along the river. No phone lines have been ran nor will they be. I tried to work with the local phone company and pay at my …

Hello,

I'm finding that I have more and more friends that need help remotely. Teamviewer has been great for me, but I'm getting nag screens about non-personal use.

Is there a free alternative that's reliable?

Users are currently utilizing a dropbox.  This present a security risk as important documents are stored in a cloud and being shared among the other users in organization.
Considering to implement a box.net for Windows/MACs. and mobile devices iPads/iPhone/Droids, etc.

Any opinions on that?   Organization is primarily Windows-based about 50 users.

I like to hear opinions on security, ease of use, anything else..

Thanks in advance.

I need our VPN clients to have an IP in the local LAN range (192.168.1.xxx).  They need to be able to interact with local PC's as if they were on the same LAN.

Right now we have VPN via a Synology NAS, running their VPN Server package.  We are using PPTP but can use IP-SEC or OpenVPN.  The VPN server is assigning clients an IP in the 10.0.10.x range.

Our local IPs in the 192.168.1.xxx range are assigned by a DHCP server on our router, running DD-WRT.  We could also use this as a VPN server if necessary.

How do I do this?  Does the DHCP server have to assign the IPs over the VPN?  Is that even possible?

Hi there I wonder if someone could enlighten me...We are a small school currently running windows 2008 server with a suite of desktops and a laptop trolley. The server is over 4 years old and will need to be replaced soon. I have been looking at virtual servers and a cloud based solution when I came across google education apps. I am thinking about what we actually use our server for - basically storage. Google will give each user 30GB disk space - way over what each pupil or teacher will need. We would then get collaboration tools and all of the other apps for free. My question now is why would I need a server? We use group policy to pump out software and lock down pcs but could I do this another way without the huge expense of a virtual server...If the downside would be loading on the old legacy software on each new PC then ££ wise our savings would be immense. Does anyone have any experience to share? Thank you

1) What kinds of safeguards should an organisation have in place in the unlikely event that a 3rd party hosting your apps and underlying databases (SaaS) model went bust?

2) aside from an organisation going bust, what other events may occur whereby a 3rd party SaaS provider unexpectadly has to terminate the SaaS contract and can no longer host your apps and databases.

1) What kinds of factors and metrics could/should an organisation be monitoring in terms of the 3rd pary hosting their IT applications? What kind of things specific to a SaaS outsourcing would an organisaiton (client) monitor in terms of service quality?

2) What can the client do if the service provided is not aligned with SLA's?

3) What are the risks in not monitoring service quality?

How do you approach disaster recovery for applications outside your infrastructure? What should you have in place in your policies to deal with this, considering you have zero control over the 3rd parties hosting environment? Yet they may be hosting a business critical system for your company?

We have installed Microsoft Exchange 2010 in our organisation for few years now. Recently some employees have reported that they are unable to access their mailbox through OWA. They are getting following error message:

"A problem occurred while you were trying to use your mailbox"

Could you please suggest any solution to this problem?

Hi Guys

Just a quick one.

I have a hyper v cluster that is managed by VMM.

What happens if i dont have this vmm server in a cluster and it goes down. Im pretty sure the hyper v server would still work as normal and you would just need to use hyper v manager to manage the hyper v hosts, the same way vcenter works with esx.

I have multiple logical networks and vnics that are attached to the hyper v hosts. Im sure that these can still all communicate on these logical networks without vmm. I think when vmm creates the logical switches on the hyper v hosts it makes a "road map" of where everything on the logical networks that reside on the hosts is

Just need some clarification on this.

Any help appreciated.

Our organisation has a contract with a 3rfd party to host one of our business critical applications and we access this via a web browser, essentially software as a service.

From a risk angle, what kind of contractual requirements need to be built into the contract with this 3rd party - can anyone from this background give some pointers?

A small software development firm I work with has tasked me with setting up the policies, procedures, and environment for a remote development team.   I am wondering what suggestions the EE community might have for setting this up.

Here are the basics:

- The developers mostly develop in the Cloud
- Some SSH access to Linux boxes at our data center (these are web servers PHP, JS, HTML)
- There is no central office, everyone works from home and Brings their own devices.

How can I setup a shared environment so that each Developer has the tools they need pre-installed and ready to go in a secure way.  We will have some interns working as well, and I don't want them having copies of code on their personal computers.

I had thought about setting up a Terminal Server and having them RDP into the box, but I read several posts saying this is difficult to maintain.  So I am posting the question here in hopes someone who has led a team of Remote Developers can point me in the right direction.

thanks

Hello guys,

I have an ASP application that sends e-mails through my on-premise Exchange Server 2007 without authentication.  Now, I´m migrating to Office365 and I don´t know how to configure my application to send e-mails using an authenticated user.  I have some Oracle procedures/functions that sends e-mails too.  What should I do?  I´m using Dundas Mailer with ASP.

Thank you very much,

Alexsandro Novaes

Hi.

How can I change the datasource to update with new fields in Salesforce?  If I create a new report, I can see the new field, but I cannot update the datasource.

At work there are both mac and windows machines.  We want to block access to the internet via browsers and only allow access via a remote desktop client.  This is mainly due to reduce malware and other security issues.
What is the best way to do this?  We have uninstalled Safari off some machines, however savvy users can reinstall it.

Is there a port we can block or a some way to minimize the install/use of all browsers.
We have considered password protecting browsers.  is there another way?

Our company recently switched from Google docs to Microsoft 365 and will keep google active for a while to enable the transition.   I have a huge number of docs that need to be transferred.   Can someone recommend a way to easily move the docs without doing an individual download and then upload to 365.
