Cloud services are services made available to users via the Internet from a provider's servers. Cloud services are designed to provide easy, scalable access to applications, resources and services, and are fully managed by a cloud services provider. It is a model for enabling ubiquitous, on-demand access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources. Frequently offered cloud services are infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), desktops-as-a-service (DaaS), software-as-a-service (SaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS). Examples of cloud services include online data storage and backup solutions, Web-based e-mail services, hosted office suites and document collaboration services, database processing, managed technical support services and more.

I would like to check if data at rest encryption is turned on in my Isilon cluster.

From what I have read Isilon does it automatically with the use of SED (Self encrypting drives).

Is my understanding correct?

And how can I check if the drives on my system are self encrytping?

Also if we setup cloudpools then how can we make sure that data will be encrypted on the cloudpool side as well?

We are thinking of using cloudpools to archive data to a third party provided storage service.

The third uses Isilon cluster on their side as well to provide storage for use with cloudpool.

I have read that if cloudpool is being used with another Isilon as the archive location then no cloudpool license is required. Following article says "The CloudPools license for using either another Isilon cluster or EMC ECS will be free to customers." :-

What’s New in Isilon OneFS 8.0 | GeekFluent

Also, one of the EMC documentation mentions the same thing.

But the third party vendor is saying we need the license and the config options for cloudpool are greyed out in our system.

Please advise if this is possible without the license requirement?

I work in a medium sized private school in asia. We're planning to get tablets for our students that can be brought home for their use. We would like to be able to enforce our school policies, will filter web content, and be able to control their internet access (to limit their access so they dont stay too much time. Can anyone propose any solutions?

Thank you

Hi

I've asked this question on the dropbox forum but not much response, so hoping someone here may be able to offer some insight.

I would very much like to understand more about what happens with Dropbox when the desktop application encounters a missing root Dropbox directory (using Windows 10 if that is pertinent but my query is about general Dropbox behaviour)

This could happen if one were to install Dropbox - against adivice from Dropbox - onto an external drive.
But this could also happen if for instance the Dropbox root folder on an internal disk were moved or deleted, perhaps accidentally.
(Note I'm not talking about deleting files inside the dropbox root folder - which would of course sync and remove them in the cloud. I'm specifically talking about the whole folder being missing, not just the contents thereof)

Is it true that if the Dropbox application cannot find the root dropbox folder - then it will delete all the files in the Dropbox?

First I would like to be sure that I have understood this correctly, and then if so, I am wondering why this apparently strange design choice has been made?

Many thanks for any input or clarification!

Hi,

We have a SmartThings hub and SmartThings power outlet.

There is a device plugged into the SmartThings power outlet.

Also, we have an Amazon Echo Dot connected with the SmartThings power outlet.

There is also a Google Home in the room.

Ideally, what we would like to happen is that if someone turns off the SmartThings power outlet via the app or Amazon Alexa, that the SmartThings power outlet would turn back on after several hours, example 4 hours.

This would mean the device connected to the smart outlet could only ever be turned off for 4 hours at most.

Is there a way of configuring this via SmartThings, Amazon Alexa or with some other type of smart power outlet?

Thanks,
Robbie

As I have mentioned in one of my previous questions, as a business were are now procuring more and more cloud services.
I’m trying to examine our procedures and governance to make sure that we procure cloud solutions that are fit for purpose and secure.
One of the controls I have thought of is to have a central repository of our cloud providers as we already have numerous different suppliers and I don’t think as a business we have one go to document that shows the provider of the cloud solution hosting our data, an emergency contact, location of data etc etc.  I have been reading through best practice guides and frameworks but I can’t see anything that suggested that this is something that should be implemented.
It seems like a good idea to me but can anyone point me in the direction to any best practice, frameworks, guides etc that support this to take to management as a bit of backup.
Is it something that is done in your own businesses?
Are there any real benefits to this and are there any risks to not implementing such a control?

Unless of course you feel this is not a worthwhile control to have in place, in which please feel free to say.

I’m about to start some work looking at how our business procures cloud services.
We are a large business with many different departments and an in-house IT team.

We already have some of our systems hosted via SaaS and these have followed correct procedures in terms of ensuring data is appropriately secured etc.
My concern is that some departments might be going off and procuring cloud services with no input or support from IT.  This obviously poses several high risk issues, especially when you consider some of the data may be private, confidential or commercially sensitive and as such needs to be carefully controlled.

I have two questions:
1)      How do other businesses mange the procurement of cloud services to ensure that appropriate security and governance issues have been considered and how can you control this to ensure that individual departments can’t just go and do this themselves with no IT/Business input.
2)      How can we determine if we have any data out there in the cloud that we are centrally unaware of and that have had no corporate input.  I’m thinking of analysing our finance system to determine if any payments have been made to cloud providers, this might not be easy as not all providers have obvious names.  Reviewing our contracts registers to identify any cloud providers.  Reviewing corporate credit cards for similar to see if anything has been purchased on credit cards.

The aim of this is to ensure there are suitable frameworks/procedures/policies…

I got a requirement to store some documents and photos into a Cloud service provider.

Just wondering which one should be considered? How much budget should I allocated per annual?

As a startup, I need to have a storage of 2TB. Subsequently, I foresee an incremental growth of storage like 500GB is required for the following years and I also need that cloud service to be available in Asia.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thank you

I am at a company that is trying to sync their local data drive to the google cloud but this is not the problem.

They would like to setup permissions on the files within the google teams to duplicate the MS server permissions so that certain people can have access to these folders remotely and update, edit and keep them in sync.

The challenges are that within folders we need some to be read only others to be modify and to allow a sync back to the client and back up again.

Can you suggest any third party software or advice or alternatives as I can see this getting messy very quickly, mainly from the manual replication of permissions. If there are any tools to help with assigning permissions that would also help.

thank you

Hello!

I have a couple clients that are looking to remove on premises server and go completely cloud server for varying reasons.  While I am reluctant to go this route, the customer wants it regardless of my input so I need to figure out a plan.

They have Office 365, and the files are in a sharepoint, and their E-mail in the cloud.  The server is really only doing DNS and AD functions.   DNS can be offloaded to the router, and that leaves AD and GPO.

With full desktop stations to remain on prem, what is the best approach for domain management, or is it even needed at this point?

Are SMB's setting up a site to site VPN to AWS or Azure, and then using AD and GPO from the cloud?

I really dislike the idea of turning the PC's back into a workgroup, and the headaches that it brings with.

Looking for suggestions, I feel I am missing a simple piece in the middle.

Thank you.

I am currently setting up a training room where I want everything to be automated. I have door style windows on a slanted roof that currently needs to be opened manually. The problem is that the windows are very high, and it is not practical to try and open them manually.

They are side hung escape windows with wooden frames and dimensions 660x1180mm.

I want to convert the windows so they can open automatically, preferably using a remote or voice commands using my SmartThings hub or Amazon Alexa. Would this be possible?

Would you be able to guide me to the type of window opener/actuator that would best suit my window and what else I would need to get to be able to use my SmartThings hub or IFTTT event triggering.

Any solutions would be much appreciated.

Regards,
Robbie

Hello

I have tried a number of times to reduce the size of my EBS volume. I keep running into problems.

I am using Centos 7.3.1611 and Plesk (set up through Amazon marketplace)

I have managed to copy all the files over from the old server to the new using the instructions here (https://superuser.com/questions/1123799/how-to-decrease-size-the-ebs-root-volume-of-the-rhel-instance-in-aws) - as well as similar other guides.

The only difference is because I am using xfs instead of ext4 I was unable to do the e2label

When I attach the new volume to the instance as /dev/sda1 it does not load. I cannot connect to it using SSH and websites do not load.

I am at a loss now. I have tried so many times. I made a mistake making my initial EBS volume size way too big and it is costing me quite a bit of money every day.

I am unsure if the problem is because I am formatting my drive is XFS. This was the format of the original drive when I first set up the instance. I have not been able to find a guide that details how to shrink an EBS volume that is formatted in XFS, they are all for ext4.

If any one could provide some assistance that would be much appreciated.

So we have about 12 cameras at our company that records all day every day.The 1TB drive in the Platinum dvr gets full super fast and we are unable to retreive old recordings from a couple of months back. So i was looking at some unlimited cloud backup solutions like like Crashplan and Backblaze. Now Crashplan is good as it allows me to not only backup all files but also all mapped network drives. is there a way for me to access the DVR hdd from my file server and somehow map it to my server so the backup software can upload all the recordings? Any alternatives? Any advice would be appreciated:)

Hi EE,

I'm trying to replace the paper check-in and manual name calling in our lobbies. I'm looking at http://www.lobbycentral.com and http://www.fmsi.com/lobby-management.

What paid cloud based solution are you using and how do you like it?

Thank you for the feedback!

Hi Everyone,

I am hoping you can help me with this.

We have several cloud servers and are going to purchase more.

The hosting company does offer several options for back up.  One of the options is a server in the cloud to manage all of that but it's being stored in the same place?  My management wants to know our options for backing up in the cloud.

Here is what i don't get.

In trying to work on disaster recovery here, we are looking at backing up to the cloud, these servers I am trying to get more information on now are already in the cloud, so what is the recommended way that we should be backing up our cloud servers?  I can't back them up to here I don't think.

I hope that made sense, just didn't know how others are doing it.

Thank you,

Karen

hi, Whatsapp archives audio attachments as .opus files. I have saved them to a dropbox. Surely there is a way to play them on a browser without going through a complicated series of conversion steps. I need this to work for non-techies who can click on a link but that's as far as I expect the user involvement to go. I can generate the links if there is a site that will stream the opus files.

Can anyone suggest a site? Something like URL WWW.CLEVEROPUSSTREAMINGSITE.COM?MYOPUS=MYDROPBOXLINK

Thanks

Hi all,
I'm looking for truly unbiased (but intelligent) company(ies) who perform cloud assessments.  Specifically, the assessment I am seeking would assess the current IT situation, review both physical data and interview personnel, then present a findings report.  The report would describe the current IT situation, proposed cloud solution, and challenges to achieving that cloud solution.  Challenges would need to consider the expense from both CapEx and OpEx, transition expense, meaning migration, and educational expense of training.

I believe a third-party company needs to be able to provide this type of analysis, since customers cannot make the unbiased view.  I also believe a third-party company cannot offer its own cloud services since their analysis would be biased towards their service offerings.

So, anyone know of any company that provides such a service?
