Hi
For my Python RTS / MOBA server,

I am at a decision where I should either make a class for reading UDP activity updates from the clients over TCP activity ( a failsafe)
Should I have a UDPlistener class and a TCPlistener class?
or should I have a packetListener class with a UDPlisten method and  also, a TCPlisten method? - that are each made into Threads?
I think an all-in-one approach would make linking into the game smoother?

both would work, but which would look best? Is Python better suited to one?

Thanks

I am wondering whether to buy a 240Hz monitor for my sons to use for gaming.  How does fps relate to refresh rate? One has a GTX 750Ti and the other has a GTX 960. Both of them say that they are capable of a 240Hz refresh rate but when they play their games they never seem to get an fps of more than about 170. Does that mean that the graphics card would be able to cause a 240Hz monitor to refresh at 240Hz but that the change in image would actually only occur 170 times per second - a bit like having the monitor sample 240 time per second an image that is changing 170 times per second?

Essentially, does this mean that until they get a graphics card which is capable of an fps that is closer to 240, then a 144Hz monitor would perform in a similar way to a 240Hz monitor?

Thank you

Hi
I have an iDrive subscription, 2TB, with 2 accounts, mine and my mother.
We both need data backing up. me code en masse, 24/7, she paint en masse 8/7 not to mention diary and ladies/book/painting/prayer/garden clubs.

It looks like that having an account means one repository to backup into.
Whenever I backup my MacBook, it is a single entity, It doesn't do date-specific backups, right? I only get one restore data-set?
My mother will get her own one, also..
So, if we just backup whenever we need to, it should all work out?
She'll insist on doing it every night, FYI
I might do it once a week.
I was keeping my Python code files on iCloud. What are people doing? A mix of the two?

Thanks

Hi
I am not certain if League of Legends is an RTS type network server, or an FPS? The player movements are well spaced out, so I'd think RTS

In Summoner's rift, is it only 5 people/champions playing? Is that the practical limit on players, in most network games?

If I port my working Java RTS server that I finished a little while ago to Python, could I expect any performance shift? It is TCP messaging, with UDP duplicates sent afterwards for speed.

Thanks

Hi,
So, it seems that micro-transactions may become the new norm. No more Best-Buy raiding on Christmas Eve. Everything to be bought on-line?
- Free downloads, and pay to play. Riot Games needed no shelf space, or boxes.
Like Logic Pro for music recording, one time payment of $150, League of Legends, free-to-play, /w paying for in-game item/ability purchases.
- buying better Heroes. the start off heroes are decent in comparison to some of the purchasable heroes that can deliver a better game experience.

Thanks

Nowadays, PayPal is one of the most widespread payment systems all over the world. It makes internet payments easy and quite fast. Even online gaming providers which have the premium content option or gaming staff for real money are accepting PayPal in their products. What is more surprising, even online casinos like ones from this list http://free-slots-no-download.com/paypal/ allow you to make payments with it from your account. So I am interested in your opinion about it. How do you think, why it is so popular?

This article begins an exploration into the modern world of gaming in a scope intended to introduce gaming culture and the industry to those who know nothing about it. What's happening in gaming affects us all in one way or another, and this article sets out to show you why you should care.

+1 - Great article on a number of levels.  Looking forward to reading more.

 Just to reassure younger viewers that computer games really did exist pre-July '09.

Nice using Mark Twain for the censorship argument - although it was probably Robert A. Heinlein that quote's based on

Now off to find my Everquest account  :)

Agree with MASQ, I look forward to reading more.

If you don't already you should subscribe to Yu-kai Chou's newsletter he has some great insights as a gamer who turned his passions into a successful profession.

Maintaining an open and honest dialogue about things with our children is the easiest way to foster a respectful and trusting relationship with them, and a hugely important element of creating that bond is being able to connect with them over their interests no matter what they may be.
As a parent and a long time gamer, I 100% agree. I challenge all parents out there to try to understand why their kids enjoy something so much before casting judgement.

31

Good day gentlemen (and any ladies that may also be present among us).

I have a cracking challenge that will tease your expertise.

I have titled this challenge '31' because it is based on a simple game I played as a child.

The game starts with a running total of 0. Two players take turns choosing a number between '1' and '6' which is added to the total. The player who chooses the number which brings the total to '31' wins.

The numbers '1' to '6' are chosen from a pool of four '1's, four '2's, four '3's, four '4's, four '5's and four '6's. Once a number is chosen, it is removed from the pool of available numbers.

Example:

Total = 0

Let's say we have the following numbers available:

1111
2222
3333
4444
5555
6666

Player A chooses say, 5.

Total = 5 (because 0 + 5 = 5)

A '5' is removed from the pool of available numbers so we now have:

1111
2222
3333
4444
555
6666

(Notice there are now only 3 '5's in the pool)

Let's say player B chooses '4'

Total = 9 (because 5 + 4 = 9)

And our number pool now looks like the following:

1111
2222
3333
444
555
6666

If any set of numbers '1' through '6' is exhausted then that number cannot be chosen in subsequent turns.

Programming Considerations

The program must be written using only DOS commands as a .BAT or .CMD

I had this question after viewing What is the best budget gaming laptop in 2018?.

Do we have any members who have recently built custom laptops? Where they for gaming? I've always found it more cost effective to build a tower and don't really need to "game on the go". But now I'm curious if there are better options for building custom laptops as I know my son would strongly prefer a laptop.

My last build is about 6 years old and I'm currently diagnosing an issue with it that makes me want to rebuild. :)

Also curious if anyone has any experience with this company https://www.newegg.com/Eluktronics-Gaming-Laptops/BrandSubCat/ID-131280-3365

I am trying to create a 2D board game.  To move a game piece, you click on the game piece to select it, then move the mouse to the square you want the piece to move to.

I am wanting to draw a "path" as the mouse moves to the potential destination square, showing which squares the piece will move to, taking into account any obstacles the game piece will need to navigate around.

The part I am struggling with most is how to draw the path line.  For example, the line will look different based upon the game piece moving SOUTH (indicated in blue) vs moving EAST (indicated in red).

[NOTE:  I am not sure what this is called in gaming circles (the shape of the lines themselves).  Is it called aliasing?  Anti-aliasing is supposed to "smooth"-out the "jagged" stair-step look of the lines formed (lines drawn at an angle, or circles).  I know that the letters I am typing, when zoomed up to like 800% of normal size appear very jagged. ]

I am just wondering what the algorithm is called and where I might go for help on this (including here on EE, of course).

Blade's Shadow Cloud gaming service ($34.95 /mo) launched in California today:
https://shadow.tech/usen/

They claim to deliver the performance of a high end gaming system, through any old computer you have. They also offer a "Box" ($139) that is supposed to deliver the best experience for their service:
https://shadow.tech/usen/box

This is actually the only way I'll likely be PC gaming anytime soon. Building a rig just isn't in the cards nowadays. Looks like it's the equivalent of a virtual machine with a dedicated GTX card and 12GB of RAM.

I'm gonna need to take this for a test drive.

they've just arrived and on charge.... these were purchased for FPV drone flying, as I already have VR head sets from Oculus and HTC!

So these are NOT VR headsets.

and what I do like, is they can be setup for IPD and can be setup for the correct eyesight +/-... shift like you find on proper bins and scopes!

Hi, I am Developing a game with Unity Game Engine, I can barely code so am learning the ins and outs. The problem is that when the game runs, it glitches now and then, often dropping through the landscape as it does. I have run a profiler within the game engine which tells me that the main glitches are coming from the Garbage Collector, basically the Heap memory is filling up very quickly, and once full the game pauses briefly as it empties, causing the main character to glitch through the landscape. How do I lessen this behaviour as it is making the game unplayable. I am looking for someone who has experience in this field, hopefully familiar with Unity or at least willing to become familiar with unity, as the game progresses I hope to build a relationship with this person with the aim of taking them onboard as a part-time programmer, who would be up for a cut of the final takings, whatever they may acrue to. If someone is up for this role I would give them full access to the game, which is going to take a couple of years to build, and would pay a fair percentage in accordance with how much they helped me, which can be discussed by email. Thanks for any help, I will greatly appreciate it :)

Hi

I've been playing League of Legends with no problems,
and all of a sudden it gets into this 'Attempting to reconnect' mode at the re-spawn altar after my champion gets served
and the game is essentially locked and I cant move my primary dude. I can move the camera, but not my champion.

Is that something I did wrong in my game-play?

Thanks

Hi

In my game, I'd like a platform segment, and a proper dungeon Python data structure.
Is it simply a 1200x400 grid of tiles / terrain blocks,
or do coders also like to do placing of terrain features x,y with x_length and y_length?

How would I do an optimal  grid in Python for this, best?

Thanks

Free Tool: ZipGrep

ZipGrep is a utility that can list and search zip (.war, .ear, .jar, etc) archives for text patterns, without the need to extract the archive's contents.

One of a set of tools we're offering as a way to say thank you for being a part of the community.

I have 3 Amazon Echo's and I would like to live chat with all 3 of them at the same time how do I do that?

Hi
Python array/list instantiation, import and other declarations are confusing me!

In my code attached, I have a main class for holding the data structures for a platform game level, basically x,y, positions and length of the platform, for now,
I don't understand why the 'module' object is not callable - error? It seems it should be trivial. What does that mean? I intend to end up with a list of terrain objects
In platform.py, must I do 'import platform as platform' is that telling me how to call methods, get data from that class?

Thanks

Hi,

I finally got Python images to be plopped on the screen, just blitting, a lonely mutalisk, but not flapping.
To make my mutalisk flap its wings in python, or any of my many animated GIF's, for that matter, must I blit them frame by frame? I was surprised it wasn't automatic flapping, like in other situations.

Here is the blit code that finally worked. . .
here

Thanks

Really have to tip your hat to the developers who do game dev for *nix. I'd think the dev investment would be significantly higher than the potential return.

Linux games are seeing more investment lately. All of the major game development engines support Linux. As long as a developer makes sure their toolkits support multiple platforms it becomes fairly easy to support Linux. I've also heard developers mention that developing cross-platform games on Linux can decrease bugs on other platforms. It helps that companies like Android and Nintendo have Linux based OS and a large target audience.

Sometimes the Linux version is cost-prohibitive to implement but other times it works out alright, especially since Linux gamers are typically starved for good games.

Hi All,

I am trying to pair my Wii remote to and an nvidia shield.  But I don't know the bluetooth pin.

After reading several articles online it says I need to calculate it based on the MAC address.

The PIN-Code is the binary bluetooth address of the wii remote backwards. Following a short piece of C code to calculate the PIN:

Lets assume the Wiimote has the bluetooth address "00:1E:35:3B:7E:6D". If you want the PIN for bluetooth pairing in a simple string, do the following:

char pin[6];
pin[0] = 0x6D;
pin[1] = 0x7E;
pin[2] = 0x3B;
pin[3] = 0x35;
pin[4] = 0x1E;
pin[5] = 0x00;

Now "pin" contains your bluetooth pin that should be used for pairing your devices.

http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Wiimote#Bluetooth_Pairing

Could someone help me work out what the pin should be?  I've tried several online calculator but suspect I'm doing it wrong.

The MAC addresses for my two Wii controllers are;

00:19:1D:C6:EE:61
00:19:1D:B5:57:89

Many thanks

Some of my friends who I play a different pvp game with have been playing Fortnite a lot lately.

I tried it a few times and was really put off by:
1.) The time to spawn into a solo match, from lobby to airbus, wasn't too bad. But when you end up getting shotgunned by someone a few minutes into the match, while you're holding a pickaxe, a couple of times -- it adds up to a lot of time spent for nothing. No respawn... go through the whole matchmaking process again.
2.) If you play with friends and you die early, you either have to sit through 10-15 minutes of boredom, or split out and go find a solo match.
3.) I really dislike games where the most effective technique to out maneuver someone heads-up, is pogo-stick jumping over and over and over. I get that Fortnite isn't supposed to be hyperrealistic, but still.
4.) Minecraft'ing a wall/fort in the middle of combat is pretty OP. I'd prefer if you could only use the obstacles built into the map for cover.

I haven't played PuBG, but I'm guessing it's more my style.

Otherwise, the graphics and battle royale concept are pretty cool. I'll probably give it another chance, but my initial feeling wasn't very positive.
