Gamers,
Requesting advise from you. My son is 6 yrs old and has a liking for PC/mobile gaming just like many other kids his age. While I do not want to him to get hooked to gadgets full time, I do want him to know and experience some of the latest technologies in a controlled way. Also, I believe gaming does make him a quick thinker, which I have observed among many of my young colleagues who have excelled in their technical roles.

Doing some research online, I understand Sony PS4 and MS XBox one are some good choices in the market. Do you have any other suggestions? Do they both require monthly subscriptions? Which do you think have more kid friendly games?

Any comments greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm looking for a non-realtime multi-player Chess app for Android. ie one where each player can take their turn at their leisure, so they don't need to be online at the same time.

Can anyone suggest one? Even knowing appropriate words to search for an app that's non-realtime would be helpful, as this doesn't seem to be a feature offered by 2 of the most popular apps I've tried out.

Hi,
not to sound like I'm drowning u out with game coding Q's (I am)
-I am focusing all my attention on my best idea. My second idea needs a trailblazer game to work, first. Thanks Doug for the original concept orders. Based on my successful Java RTS collaboration here, I am confident this first phone game can get me in the right trajectory.
Contemplating a chess type problem game, drag move might not be best with fingers? or am I wrong, - tap *from* and *to* squares? Maybe people expect drag? - even if fingers obscure the piece? Have a thick pink line from start square to finish-finger-spot?

I see there are Javascript TouchStart and TouchEnd type functions.
There seem to be some method collision/overlapping event complications on some outline pages.
Is there a definitive, javascript - correct graphics setup and touch outline page?
Wordscapes has drag-move when choosing letters.
Thanks

Hi
I notice that all the .io game development YouTube's have similar looking IDE's for development.

I have tried Atom..
But, I think one of them might be especially suitable for .io games. (quick/easy upload, publish)

Which one should I be using for io games?
Thanks

Hi
I'm having trouble  finding a truly awesome royalty free celebrity photos site. Google only gives me photos of the bloody royal family.
Megan, Diana, the queen, Charles, Harry and Wills aren't  the only celebrities.

For an io phone game, I'd like royalty free pics of Natalie Portman - Sarah Michelle Gellar, even Bill O'Reilly and Geraldo, Trevor Noah, Terry Bradshaw, Hillary and Obama  and Bill Nye. etc

AOC ! ! !

If I use them in a trivia type game, is that fair use?

Ideas?
Thanks

Hi
I am having trouble getting the chess window to happen on my Javascript networking client.
My chess server is in Java, and my client is ready to fire up a .js chessboard after the handshaking is done.

I have become aware of anonymous scope.
I am fairly certain that it is why I cant instantiate this window, in the Git-Hub code below.
How might I change it to work?

Hi I have a spectrum 210 recorder, there is a place for apps and it already has NetFlix, but I wanted to add another to it, so I can get rid of my Roku if possible.  Question how to I add another app?

Thanks all

Hi
My Java server chess is going okay.
The rep on the phone said I'd be able to run the server on the Godaddy system. Is that right?

I also think I should test it with a Javascript app, not just a Java JFrame client.
Where would I look for good Javascript phone game type GUI examples, w image lookup from online, TCP to my server..
Is there a good chess GUI code outline waiting out there?

Thanks

I was given the attached Xbox 360 : never used it before.
Can Win10 alone be used to play with this item or will need
additional accessories/gadgets to be able to play.

Can point me to links for additional gadgets if needed.

Dear Experts,

I am a part of a team that developed an iPhone/Android game.  We are in a unique position because the sponsor of the game is willing to pay a lot to get this app marketed by an experienced digital game marketing company.

My issue is, I am not familiar with the gaming industry at all, and not sure how to find such marketing company.  The 2 contacts I found through my professional networks did seem qualified, but as soon as we start talking budget, they stop responding.  (I was told to start from 20k, but my sponsor is willing go pay quite a bit.  He wants this game to be popular.)
Perhaps they are not willing to work with such small team of developers?  I am thoroughly stumped to how I can proceed with this problem.
Please advise.

Hi

I think my .io game might benefit from the main landing page being a blog / sign-in
before playing, so my gamers need an account to participate in contests that I'm anticipating.
Players will be able to practice, no matter what.
Will I be able to plug a Wordpress account / logins/ features into my game?
The account will be needed for participant info. I can also pop in ads on the blog aspect.

Would Wordpress be okay for this?

Thanks

Hi
I'm anticipating decisions ahead for my .io game, both phone and browser.

I think most .io games do in-game purchases, but I'd like to know if that is avoidable, and still practical. One of the marquee .io game creators said he was averse to micro-transactions. I'm inclined to agree. A game like slither only does personalized graphics? Games like slither just crank it in. Let's discuss chess, as an example, for my game and situation. It isn't chess, but slightly similar in play speed, etc. How could that be monetized, most effectively? For my game and its circumstances, I am expecting good traffic. - certainly not just my friends and family.
I thought of a video ad popping up after each 8 moves, or something. As hideously annoying as that might be, what are my options? On a phone, the board need only occupy the top half, or so, leaving good room for ads below?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I think I might have got myself into something more involved than I imagined.

I know a family that is quite poor and they have two young children 5 years and 7 years old. They cannot afford anything as far as toys go. I found two toy guitars and thought that they would be a nice gift. When I got them home I found that they are not self contained items. It showed that a dongle with a usb plug was needed. I was able to locate the dongles. I assumed (incorrectly) that they simply plugged into a windows 10 machine and they would be useful "funwise" for the children.

As it turns out I am fairly sure that they MUST be used exclusively with a Nintendo Wii gaming box. I will buy a used Wii box if needed but I am wondering if there is any possibility that they can be used with appropriate software with a windows machine. Or, must I buy a used Wii box? I am determined to see a smile on the faces of these two boys if I can get these "guitars" to function.

Nintendo named them "Fender Stratocaster" guitars. I don't now how they got away with that, but it does identify what items I have to work with. Does any expert have any bright ideas on how to implement these two items without any further major expense? Suggestions most welcome. Note: I am NOT a gamer and have no experience with any sort of gaming box.

Hi
I am having no trouble generating legal moves on the board state in my experimental Java chess server.

I'd like to know how best to send the legal moves list byte[] to each client.
My move struct constructor looks like this:
public ChessMove (int _x1, int _y1, int _x2, int _y2, char chPiece) {
              //chess characters are upper-case white, lower-case black, RNBQKBNR and rnbqkbnr, PPPPP and ppppp
		x1=_x1;
		y1=_y1;
		x2=_x2;
		y2=_y2;
		pieceChar=chPiece;

Open in new window

I can convert integers to 2 bytes, no problem...
cast integer to (byte) and then
byte SecondByte(int x) {
			return (byte) ((x & 0x0000ff00) >> 8);
		}

Open in new window

and then [] to int:
static int intFromBytes(byte firstByte, byte secondByte) {
			if ((secondByte&0x80)==128) {
				//negative number
				return (int) ( (firstByte&0x000000ff)| ((secondByte&0x000000ff) << 8) | 0xffff0000 );
			} else {
				//Positive number
				return (int) ( (firstByte&0x000000ff)| ((secondByte&0x000000ff) << 8) );
				}
		}

Open in new window

I'm not worried about cheating, because the client sends back the index of the move in the move array list they want to play to the server.

What is the most efficient way to encode my list of legal moves for each client on the client-server messaging?
Do I not need to bother, and have the move generator on the client as well?
Cheating, altering data in memory won't help/matter. If they don't send back a decent Legal move's index to the server, it's their fault!
There are many ways to approach this, but I'd like "approval." My RTS server happened, and I'm certain this plan sounds good.
?

Vizio P55-F1

Connected HDMI direct to Dell laptop (e5590)
WD15 port replicator usbC connection
laptop Windows 10, 8gb, SSD 500gb
TV is extended display

When moving windows to the TV, the lag is very noticeable especially in the mouse trying to click on objects like menus or links.

Tried all HDMI ports trying to match Hz I/O
Tried multiple HDMI cables
Vizio Picture setups - tried all - standard, vivid, game, computer and tweaked options within these in the advanced options.

Tried to change the display properties in display settings to match the screen refresh rates.  Window 10 does not recognize the actual device thus Windows uses a generic Dell driver.  Only 2 options for refresh rates.

Any ideas or experience with this?  Do it all the time with other TV sets and never experienced it.

after all i've tried, my options are:

Find a setting in the "Picture" settings on the Vizio that matches and fixes issue.
Bypass the WD15 port replicator and directly into the laptop
Load a compatible driver in Windows that gives more screen refresh options or force the generic to other Hz values (option is checked in windows to "Not show options not supported..."

Thanks for any help.

Hi
My moth (er) said in an email this morning that she's been watching some older movies lately, and that the dated look is annoying.
She said so, concerning the game I'm making. I think she might be correct.
My game isn't Nintendo 64, giant pixel, but in my opinion, all the modern games with tetris like brick horizontal/localized annihilation look likewise, unoriginal. - tho they are fun
But are they making big bucks? They must be. It must just be the gameplay that matters? I can't imagine that everybody expects NBA 2K GUI experience on every phone game? Aren't phone games in a category of forgiveness for simplicity, as long as it's fun?

Thanks

Hi
I've been flicking my eyes on this agar clone server, and it is just a simple, in my opinion, TCP iostream / javascript game.
I'm glad that the agario game state / universe is centralized.

Do you agree? . . . here

Where do you suspect they house their server?

Can there be any downsides to making my game-server in Java, not .js? I have my first game ideas ready to be cranked.

Thanks

Hi

I've already angered some experts w legal questions :D - not - I know I shouldn't hope for such binding certainty w, basically, friends!
If I put in a game, a character, npc called Brad Pitt, I'd get in trouble, but how strict are they on similar names,

like, Bradd McPitt, or Ranakin Slywalker? How does a similar character look factor. Space Quest III had the Vader v Obi-Wan duel in their hangar, briefly. I'm sure Sierra got legal permission. I think I saw that if you make a character that is in all black, helmet and laser sword, that is a no-no. What about a dead ringer for an Alien? (xenomorph)
What should I know!?
Thanks

Hi
I'm trying to get javascript to work in eclipse

I have this code from a youtube, but eclipse won't run it, saying

"The selection can not be launched, and there are no recent launches"
that sounds like I never had it set up correctly.
It used to say that it couldn't find a JRE.

Here is the javascript from the example: both html and javascript below
do I need a static void main

index.html
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset = "ISO-8859-1">
<title> JSPO title</title>
<script type = "text/javascript" src = "firstjsp.js"> </script>
</head>
<body>

<script type="text/javascript"> alert(add(200,100))</script>

</body>
</html>

Open in new window

simple Javascript:
function add(a,b) {
	return a+b;
}

Open in new window

What might I be missing?

Hi
My last Disney question concerned their ruthlessness protecting their IP.
This one concerns how seriously they take criticism.
They sued an elderly couple in Florida for $1000,000 for using an image of Mickey on their kindergarten wall.

Obviously, if they were super sensitive about criticism, Youtube would be buried in lawsuits concerning fan mega-criticism of Star Wars.
Would they be as ruthless concerning an inconspicuous site criticizing their Star wars decisions and plans?
My dad said it's just free-speech and they cant do anything (no IP infringement) I won't use any images on the site.

I am trying to use a ASUS M5A78L-M Plus/USB3 motherboard along with Wirecast and was told that my built-in graphics card, the Radeon 3000, will only support DirectX 10.  I need at least DirectX 11 to run Wirecast, so I just want to make sure that I understand this correctly.

It seems the only expansion slots on this machine are:
1 x PCIe 2.0 x16
1 x PCIe 2.0 x1
1 x PCI

Is there even an external PCI graphics card that can run DirectX 11 or do I just build another computer?

Hi

I run a VRBO in Bethany Beach, Delaware and it gets decent traction, adjacent to the Salt Pond
Do you know or think if I made it a golf-VRBO, ie if you stay here, you get total access to the Salt Pond golf course?
Or do you think people only go to VRBO's to go to the beach? - The golf course dude phoned me and said as much.
There is a deal on summer packages tomorrow that I could capitalize on. Golfers could make it a visit?

Thanks

I plan to start recording my gaming sessions. What would be a good internal HDD (or SSD, whatever) for that? I only have one drive slot left in my desktop computer. I imagine that write speeds and write durability would be the main criteria for that task. I don't plan on keeping the recorded sessions for very long so I don't think I need tons of space. This drive would be exclusively used for this purpose.
