Blade's Shadow Cloud gaming service ($34.95 /mo) launched in California today:
https://shadow.tech/usen/

They claim to deliver the performance of a high end gaming system, through any old computer you have. They also offer a "Box" ($139) that is supposed to deliver the best experience for their service:

This is actually the only way I'll likely be PC gaming anytime soon. Building a rig just isn't in the cards nowadays. Looks like it's the equivalent of a virtual machine with a dedicated GTX card and 12GB of RAM.

I'm gonna need to take this for a test drive.

its cheaper to just pay for a gaming rig because a monthly subscription I may not even touch one month, not use it at all.

You can turn off a monthly subscription.

For example, this month I could pay $34.95 to play games on a high end machine at max settings with no struggles with drivers, etc. Next month I could turn off the subscription if I'm not going to be. Extremely low investment, if the experience is actually good.

Alternatively, if I shelled out $2k for a gaming rig and don't use it for a month. That's a depreciating asset that I'm effectively losing money on, by the day. No way to turn that loss off without selling the entire rig.

Not to mention, at $34.95 a month, I'd be using the top of the line gear every single month. It would take 57 months (almost 5 years) before I would reach the $2k that I'd have paid for a gaming rig -- a rig that would be outdated 5 years later.

Remeber before Netflix when we had DVD players? Then Blu-Ray players? Now you just stream through your TV/Phone/Tablet. Companies like Blade and Nvidia are doing the same thing to the pc gaming hardware industry. The writing is on the wall. The days of massive, power sucking PCs in your home are numbered.

Imagine being a parent with a kid who wants to play a new PC game but doesn't have a PC:

Option A - pay a couple grand for a rig, hope they don't get bored with it (side bonus, power bill spike if they love it)
Option B - pay $35 for a subscription, cancel if they get bored

I'd take B every time.

@Andy my issue/concern is with the network latency (lag) between all of the users and the game servers -- coupled with the added latency of using a virtual machine that most of the people you are competing with, wouldn't be dealing with.

Getting shot when you're standing behind cover (lag) will be twice as frustrating if your attempt to go behind cover is delayed (due to latency between you and your VM).

I think you will be surprised, if there is lag - then their service is very poor!

Latencies in virtual machines - sized correctly no issues!!!!

Not heard of Shadow, but this is an area we work in Commercially for Commercial Simulators!

I'm not going to call it a game! But they have a Sister company which is a Game!

Hi, I am Developing a game with Unity Game Engine, I can barely code so am learning the ins and outs. The problem is that when the game runs, it glitches now and then, often dropping through the landscape as it does. I have run a profiler within the game engine which tells me that the main glitches are coming from the Garbage Collector, basically the Heap memory is filling up very quickly, and once full the game pauses briefly as it empties, causing the main character to glitch through the landscape. How do I lessen this behaviour as it is making the game unplayable. I am looking for someone who has experience in this field, hopefully familiar with Unity or at least willing to become familiar with unity, as the game progresses I hope to build a relationship with this person with the aim of taking them onboard as a part-time programmer, who would be up for a cut of the final takings, whatever they may acrue to. If someone is up for this role I would give them full access to the game, which is going to take a couple of years to build, and would pay a fair percentage in accordance with how much they helped me, which can be discussed by email. Thanks for any help, I will greatly appreciate it :)

Hi

I've been playing League of Legends with no problems,
and all of a sudden it gets into this 'Attempting to reconnect' mode at the re-spawn altar after my champion gets served
and the game is essentially locked and I cant move my primary dude. I can move the camera, but not my champion.

Is that something I did wrong in my game-play?

Thanks

Hi

In my game, I'd like a platform segment, and a proper dungeon Python data structure.
Is it simply a 1200x400 grid of tiles / terrain blocks,
or do coders also like to do placing of terrain features x,y with x_length and y_length?

How would I do an optimal  grid in Python for this, best?

Thanks

Hi

On our last RTS we did, Java, the networking worked perfectly and the GUI worked seamlessly in time w it.
Will a Python GUI handle  a game window adequately? - as well as possible
What about with TCP and datagrams underneath it all?
Another question already suggested I keep the server in Java, for now.

Thanks

Hi
Python array/list instantiation, import and other declarations are confusing me!

In my code attached, I have a main class for holding the data structures for a platform game level, basically x,y, positions and length of the platform, for now,
I don't understand why the 'module' object is not callable - error? It seems it should be trivial. What does that mean? I intend to end up with a list of terrain objects
In platform.py, must I do 'import platform as platform' is that telling me how to call methods, get data from that class?

Thanks

Really have to tip your hat to the developers who do game dev for *nix. I'd think the dev investment would be significantly higher than the potential return.

Linux games are seeing more investment lately. All of the major game development engines support Linux. As long as a developer makes sure their toolkits support multiple platforms it becomes fairly easy to support Linux. I've also heard developers mention that developing cross-platform games on Linux can decrease bugs on other platforms. It helps that companies like Android and Nintendo have Linux based OS and a large target audience.

Sometimes the Linux version is cost-prohibitive to implement but other times it works out alright, especially since Linux gamers are typically starved for good games.

Hi All,

I am trying to pair my Wii remote to and an nvidia shield.  But I don't know the bluetooth pin.

After reading several articles online it says I need to calculate it based on the MAC address.

The PIN-Code is the binary bluetooth address of the wii remote backwards. Following a short piece of C code to calculate the PIN:

Lets assume the Wiimote has the bluetooth address "00:1E:35:3B:7E:6D". If you want the PIN for bluetooth pairing in a simple string, do the following:

char pin[6];
pin[0] = 0x6D;
pin[1] = 0x7E;
pin[2] = 0x3B;
pin[3] = 0x35;
pin[4] = 0x1E;
pin[5] = 0x00;

Now "pin" contains your bluetooth pin that should be used for pairing your devices.

http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Wiimote#Bluetooth_Pairing

Could someone help me work out what the pin should be?  I've tried several online calculator but suspect I'm doing it wrong.

The MAC addresses for my two Wii controllers are;

00:19:1D:C6:EE:61
00:19:1D:B5:57:89

Many thanks

Co-op two player Battle Royale is great fun, really enjoyed this. Did you notice the slowdown following the Meltdown patching of the Fortnite servers?

Some of my friends who I play a different pvp game with have been playing Fortnite a lot lately.

I tried it a few times and was really put off by:
1.) The time to spawn into a solo match, from lobby to airbus, wasn't too bad. But when you end up getting shotgunned by someone a few minutes into the match, while you're holding a pickaxe, a couple of times -- it adds up to a lot of time spent for nothing. No respawn... go through the whole matchmaking process again.
2.) If you play with friends and you die early, you either have to sit through 10-15 minutes of boredom, or split out and go find a solo match.
3.) I really dislike games where the most effective technique to out maneuver someone heads-up, is pogo-stick jumping over and over and over. I get that Fortnite isn't supposed to be hyperrealistic, but still.
4.) Minecraft'ing a wall/fort in the middle of combat is pretty OP. I'd prefer if you could only use the obstacles built into the map for cover.

I haven't played PuBG, but I'm guessing it's more my style.

Otherwise, the graphics and battle royale concept are pretty cool. I'll probably give it another chance, but my initial feeling wasn't very positive.

Free Tool: Site Down Detector

Helpful to verify reports of your own downtime, or to double check a downed website you are trying to access.

One of a set of tools we are providing to everyone as a way of saying thank you for being a part of the community.

I got hundreds of small rectangle image pictures of a words that I cut open from a letter-page.
Question is  how to allow User to rearrange images visually to reconstruct a original or alternative story?

All kind of extras as game-like % to see how near constructed is to original would be good also, with print out option of final work.

First i can just copy them all in to Word-Blog and start re-arrange in there, but this ended up with a freezed session.

Also was thinking about some image gallery scripts that would randomize images  and would fill a page by adding  the rectangle images after each other in flat view (there would be no option to re-arrange but at least would be able to display the output some-kind in readable format).

Notes:
(image rearrange platform, web-script, flash puzzle like game where people can randomize images and then one by one order them up and down, after each other.  )

the requirements for the game is :

a single player playing against the computer.
The computer automatically generates its fleet locations
The single player enters via keyboard the location of her or his fleet.
Fleet components:
Battleship: 5 spaces (1 battleship)
Crusier: 4 spaces (1 cruiser)
Submarine: 3 spaces (1 submarine)
Destroyer: 2 spaces (1 destroyer)
Trawlers/spy ships: 1 space each (5 trawlers)
The board size: 10 spaces x 10 spaces
The human player starts by guessing a location. If a miss, the computer tells the user it was a miss. If a hit, the computer tells the user it was a hit. If a hit sinks a ship, that ship type is identified. The user's shot display is updated with the location of the hit and/or miss.
Both the user's screen and the user's guess screens are displayed for the user and updated during game play.
The game continues, alternating "shots" on the opposing fleet.
The game is over when either the user's or the computer's fleet is totally sunk.
User interface requirements:
two fleet screen matrixes
User's fleet positions
user's shot record (and hit/miss pattern)
a running count of number of shots, number of hits, and number of misses.
May be either text-based or GUI
Program requirements:
All course standards met, to include internal documentation
All variables validated and no out of range errors experienced during gameplay
method calls, parameter passing and returns to main(), properly prototyped and called.

Is there any game that is similar to sim tower 1994 computer game 25 years later?
I clicked on wikipedia page and saw 2008 portable game consule.
Probably not an actual sequel.
And I have heard of "the sims".

Andrew - based on an average amount of play the beta looks like 50MB/month.  Because of the design traffic is minimal with most of the processing at server.

Hi
All of a sudden, my battle.net is saying

Your connection will be run through a proxy server because of your network setup"

This is new.
Things seem to be hinky. I cant join or create games (that are seen by others).
I cant think of anything I've changed
What might be causing this?
Thanks

Hi
Installing Pycharm w/ a Youtube vid suggests I'll need 3.6.2 interpreter. I couldn't find an automatic update in the sections.

Is that necessary? It seems to be so. in the vid   ( here )

In preferences, there is no Pygame in the easy install type list - should it be there?
Thanks

Hi
Every one of the last 3 or 4 credit cards I've had, I've had to close due to fraud and purchases I didn't make.
I think the first few test to see if I notice, and then they don't hold back.
I was lucky that today, I decided to see if anything suspect was occurring.
I got billed by the Freedom Road Socialist Organization. !

How are they breaking me?

I strongly suspect Uber of being massively hackable, I use them almost every day.

I was asked to set up an aris game server. I am not sure where to start.  Here is the git hub page I was pointed to. I assume this is supposed to run on linux?  I know how to set up a linux server, create users, install apps, and a few other things.  Can anyone give me some direction with how I can get this up and running?

Here is the git hub page I was pointed to.

Hi all, have a Windows 10 Lenovo with an issue with Minecraft for Windows 10. Up until a couple of days ago everything worked just fine.. But now, when launching Minecraft, I see the 'Mojang' white screen, then it disappears. I have the version installed from the Windows store.
So, I find the app in "apps and features" and removed, rebooted, re-installed, but still the problem persists. I then took the drastic action to reinstall Windows 10 from scratch. I figure, time for a clean re-build anyhow. I did just that, re-installed Windows, patched, put McAfee and Office 2016 back on - perfect clean build. Installed Minecraft and OMG I get the same problem!!
I can't be the only person with this issue, must be a MS patch or something? Anyone, any help much appreciated as I need to get my 8 year old off my back ;)
ps. I did kill AV and Firewall but problem persists! Everything else is working normal.

Hi

I'm lined up to record my music at a quality studio.
A few bars in my songs are pretty tough to play, and a software instrument would nail it, I'm sure.
The producer said her assistant would load her software instrument kit in to Pro Tools.
As luck would have it, hers is a little old. My Software instrument everything (Native Instruments Komplete) doesn't work in Pro Tools, but does in Logic.
I cant imagine the assistant's suite is a let down?
Anyway
Do you think software instruments are glaringly soulless and lame?
I could make the protools incompatibility irrelevant, if I record the S.Instrument backing in Logic to the correct beats
Anyway, she has worked with tier 1 artists, and I don't want to have a >0 coefficient of clownage.
