Digital Audio

Digital audio is technology that can be used to record, store, generate, manipulate, and reproduce sound using audio signals encoded in digital form. Following significant advances in technology, digital rapidly replaced analog audio technology in most areas. Digital audio systems may include compression, storage, processing and transmission components. It is important to distinguish between the audio coding format, the codec performing the encoding and decoding of the raw audio data, and the container file. Common file formats include .wav, .aiff, .au, .m4a, .mp3, .wma, .ra and .raw.

Hello everyone,
We have a ShoreTel VoIP system at out site and we use the Softphone in our board room to make calls, have small teleconference calls and calls into Spiderphone for larger teleconference meetings.
We ran into an issue during a teleconference meeting using ShoreTel Softphone to dial Spiderphone for a larger group.  When a video file was played on the same computer as the ShoreTel Softphone the participants on the other end of the teleconference could not hear the audio from the video being played.
Is there a way to fix this or do I need to just start using GoToMeeting?

I don't think there is any such software since I've been searching for days but I thought I'd ask on here as a last ditch effort.
I am looking for music management software (that runs on Windows) that supports both streaming from an Android device over the internet (ideally it has an Android app) and synchronizing an iPod.

My current set up:
  • iTunes as music management software, in order to synchronize my iPod.
  • CloudPlayer to stream from my Android device (all of my music is on Google Drive).
  • iSyncr to synchronize select playlists from iTunes to my Android device.

This set up isn't terrible but CloudPlayer does not feature all of the playlists I have in iTunes nor does it allow me to sort by iTunes fields (date added, etc.). I could technically just sync all of my music to my Android device as well but I don't really want to use up 40GB on my device for this purpose when I have a data plan large enough to support streaming on demand.
How to fix that error in chrome?
My receiver will only play output on one mode. If I first ask the Echo Dot to play high quality music from an internet source it plays through the receiver. Then when I change mode on the receiver over to TV and ask the Echo Dot a question, e.g what time it is, it won`t answer over the receiver.

I am thinking of connecting my Echo Dot to PC speakers and the receiver using an audio mixer that has multiple outputs. Will it play over the Hi-Fi system or just play over PC speakers?

The problem with my receiver is that it needs to be on a certain mode for the Echo dot to respond. I want the Echo dot to respond no matter what mode the receiver is on.

Thanks for all your help,
I am currently setting up my home cinema room, where I want to control everything using my Echo Dot. I have set up Sky Q, Amazon Fire TV stick, Blu-ray player, etc.. to my  receiver, where each device has its own channel. All of that works perfectly.

As I`ve mentioned, I want my Echo Dot to control everything. Because of this I want the Output from the Echo Dot to come through the receiver, no matter what channel the receiver is on,  i. e. if I am using Sky Q I still want to be able to talk to and hear the Echo dots.

Does anyone have a solution I could apply?

Do you know how to convert a file that is AIFF-C Audio to MP3?

I have an audio file that I had recorded about 20 years ago, but need it updated to MP3.
An online reviewer downloads tens of thousands of video and music files and it is a real mess with no organization. Additionally they have some on their laptops, others on their PCs and then some on several servers, with a few on MACs. Fortunately the MACs are few in number so I can manually move all those files but for the rest I would like to be able to take all the files, use their file names and create folders with the name and then move all the files with matching names into the matching folder. Looking at the video files (most of which are TV shows) they have a fairly consistent naming convention which I hope will make automating this process possible. Generally speaking the name of the video files are "name of the TV show then season number then episode number", example "Americas Got Talent S02E07". So would it be possible to take all of the name but not the S02E07 and create a folder "Americas Got Talent" and then move all the files that match that name into the newly created folder. The MP3's (mostly music but some are podcasts) do not have this "consistent" naming convention so not sure what to do here -- but if I can get the videos organized I think switching them to Media Monkey for future podcasts and music should provide the organization needed. Thanks!

Alas I've never lived in a place large enough that a Sonos system would be a better solution than turning up the volume loud enough to be heard in the few small rooms I have.
Yeah, pretty much the same here. It would have been handy for a few parties, but at only ~1/year, it was hard to justify a Sonos vs. the "good-enough" approach of turning up the volume.

One of the perks of moving back East, we can actually afford real estate now ;)
I recently tied to start another band,
and connected with a very experienced drummer on craigslist, she drummed for the Peppers in Raleigh when Chad was in rehab.
I attended that show and remembered her well, for an elderly female drummer to be with them.

Anyway, I Messed it all up. I said initially, that of all the 40+ songs I had written, we could try 'em out at my house.
I suggested I put them all to sheet music (regular staff notation) as she had some neighbors interested in playing with us.
Anyway, I couldn't find time to do the songs justice on sheet. I thought staff would be good, for the melody being solid there,
Maybe with bass notes, and chord/tab signatures. It really infuriated her and she jumped ship.
For my piano songs, sheet music would be ideal. - as I can sing Phantom front to back, and have the full score from my voice / choirmaster coach.
To connect with new musicians/people, I don't want them to turn up and I have nothing on sheet, to prove I am not a clown. I want a few dozen songs on sheet.
Do you think competent musicians will be okay with just the full lyrics with chords above the words? In my first band, we just had chords and assumed/learned the melody as we got to know the song.

What is the best play here?
I'm also considering creating the band out of just millennials, as nothing else has any traction these days. Just for them to play my music. I can be a semi- manager. Would that revolt millennials? I don't care about fame or …
Hi experts

I saw this boombox at Best Buy.

The important features that I need are am/fm radio.

The reviews I read on this are mixed. Sound reviews said this boombox doesn't sound good.

Do you guys know a boombox similar to this one but that sounds good? It must have am/fm .
Even if it costs more.

One of a set of tools we're offering as a way of saying thank you for being a part of the community.

I was in a band in late nineties college,
am 39 now, single, set up financially, don't want to sneak into the decimated music industry now. I'm not going to sing for a 90 second trial in front of Simon, etc for AGT. I am of the Nirvana/Pearl Jam, don't care about clothes and 80's hair band superficiality. Online song submission venues still mention to bare in mind your image and personality. Hah! It never dies off. If I dye my hair pink like Kurt Cobain, the old bastards I have wings-night and watch football with won't be impressed.
Playing live 'round town now is more invisible than playing at an old age home, which I did once with my Novell colleagues, btw, and also at a metal institute!
But, it's the millennials that comb these sites for new music. How? Where? How can I insert my music into the millennials' radar?

If I'm not myself a millennial, is music a waste of time? It feels like it. As a 19 year old, I digged DMB, but he was all over the radio, and TV. I can handle doing it for myself and satisfaction of live play. Is that all there is for non-millennials? Dave Matthews was 36 and the others in DMB were old like me, too.

Currently some of my coworkers are using individual streaming sites to listen to internet radio on their computers. As responsible IT-admin I'd like to reduce bandwith-usage of these kind of streaming sites by providing my coworkers with a different solution.

I was thinking about a server that broadcasts one or two radio stations and a tool/website/device on the client side receiving them.

I am excited to hear your suggestions!

When playing MP3 audio files in VLC media player, how do you use hotkeys for [Pause only] and [Play only]?

In VLC media player, going to Tools > Preferences > Hotkeys results in the following window:
As can be seen, pressing {Space} is the default setting for toggling between [Play] & [Pause]. This hotkey works great.

Also shown however, are the hotkeys (Browser Stop & Browser Refresh) for the actions, [Pause only] & [Play only] respectively.

What do the latter hotkeys refer to? In other words, why would you even need to have a browser (eg Chrome) open in order to play MP3 files using VCL?

(Note: My understanding of the above two actions is that unlike toggle, which changes Play/Pause to the opposite of its current state, [Pause only] will pause the recording if it is currently playing but if currently paused, will leave it unchanged. And similarly, [Play only] will begin playing the recording if it is currently paused and if already playing, will leave it in that mode.)

The following two screenshots show how hotkeys can be modified:
 2017-08-22f_EE.png 2017-08-22g_EE.png
And the next screenshot displays the results after changing the hotkeys for [Pause only] & [Play only] to {Alt+s} & {Alt+p} respectively:
The problem however, is that when VLC is active, pressing either of those hotkeys has no effect.

What would prevent those hotkeys from working and what other shortcuts are available for activating [Pause only] & [Play only]?

It's certainly possible, with MIDI notes,

but has anyone developed virtual guitarists for DAW's that can play a melody, solo as well as a Brian May or Stone Gossard? Queen, Pearl Jam - I had 'virtual guitarist' for one of them, but it could have been better, maybe I hadn't explored enough..
What might I consider? For strumming, as well? I have Logic Pro, Cakewalk also.

I need to make a movie of my desktop with my own audio narration.

I have used Audacity and love it.

Is there a simply to learn tool that would let me record my desktop and either edit the audio with this tool or just let me edit the audio in Audacity?

There will be periods on no activity on my desktop, so I can adjust the age views to fit the edited audio.

Is Adobe Premier overkill? The cost is very high.
Client has audio files from town meetings that need to go on website.  Site is due to launch as early as next week.  Largest file size is 341MB.  Website is being built on Wordpress.

Can someone recommend a software or plugin we can use to reduce the file sizes.  They are not tech savvy so it would need to be something pretty easy to use since they do not want to have me do it for them on a weekly basis.

They might be ok with a free trial and then pay afterwards if it serves their needs.
Is there any good software (free or with minimal one time fee) can you introduce in composing some commercial standard music?

Also just curious what software are used by those recording companies?

Thank you.
I installed Audio Hijack and and SoundFlower.

I see SoundFlower in both MicroPhone and Speakers for Skype...

Which do I use?

How do I configure:

Audio Hijack

I use Audacity and have been recording my audio at 44.1 kHz. As far as bit depth, I have no idea, but have used the defaults.

I need to find the ideal for the best quality sound on my videos and podcasts, and find if my gear is up to it.

I have a MacBook:
2.4 GHz Intel Core 7
8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB

And my microphone is:
Blue Yeti
Ultimate USB

purchased a few years ago.

Can you tell me the best sampling rates, bit depth, etc. for my recordings and also the maximum values my current gear can support?

Is this microphone sub-standard to give a professional sound?

Suggestions on improvements?

I am pretty good at recording my own voice and editing it to make it sound (almost) professional. So, I have not had to deal adjusting the volume of the whole track or a part of the track.

Now,I need to import MP3's and WAV files and integrate them into my audio script.

Aligning the start times is easy, but it would be nice to import the whole track and have the ability to MUTE the parts of the track I do not audible. This would enable me to have the entire track in the one Audacity file.

But more important, how do I adjust the volume of an entire track as well as boost and reduce the volume of certain parts of the track?

What is the simplest or quickest way to convert wma to mp3 files in Windows 10?

It seems like many places want you to download an app but is that necessary/advisable?

Hello Experts!!

I am in the need of creating an automatic process that automatically extracts the audio of an 60 minute long MP4 video stored in a folder, converts it to AAC format and then stores it in blocks of 5 minutes.

I wonder if there is an already-existing tool that I could implement to automate this process?

Thanks a lot.
What technology do you think is a fad that won’t last?
I like Apple products but Airpods and the touch bar on their latest MacBook are those fads that won't last.

I'm totally speaking hypocritically because I like my Apple machines. I understand their need to stay relevant but I have a feeling it will catch up to them if they don't come out with something revolutionary.

Yeah, I hear you on that! For such a long time they were the underdog and that helped them be really scrappy and daring. But now that they're such a powerhouse, there's a lot of fear that they could become like the Microsoft of old...
After tuning in to the first podcast I made, I found the intro slow and my voice muffled. Yet I know there were some stellar moments I need to share.

It's on Speaker .com

I will get the MP3 to slice and dice it into small chunks where I would assign each snippet a name: an interesting name what would entice a listener to hear that short piece...

Am I thinking about this the right way?

I would like to offer up a side-bar on my website with podcast events of mine, and when you click an event, you see the snippets that can be listened to for that event.

Are there WordPress plug-ins for this?

I have heard that Audacity is the program I need to learn. Prior to getting too deep into it I am wondering if it has the following capability.  If I input a one or two hour stream of music that has 20 different songs on it, does Audacity have the capability to recognize that one track has ended and then another begun? I know that one long stream can be manually split up and named but I do not need the tracks to be named anything past track 1, track 2 etc. Every recording I wish to put onto a dvd does have a minimum two second pause between tracks. Will Audacity do this for me or must I do it manually?
