Digital Audio

Digital audio is technology that can be used to record, store, generate, manipulate, and reproduce sound using audio signals encoded in digital form. Following significant advances in technology, digital rapidly replaced analog audio technology in most areas. Digital audio systems may include compression, storage, processing and transmission components. It is important to distinguish between the audio coding format, the codec performing the encoding and decoding of the raw audio data, and the container file. Common file formats include .wav, .aiff, .au, .m4a, .mp3, .wma, .ra and .raw.

Do you know if "The Gonk" from "Dawn of the Dead" soundtrack, is in public domain?

Thank you
Hi, I've recorded a 10 minute video that I want to save in Windows Live Movie Maker.  When I hit the Save As  button it starts the process then gets to about 40% and stays at that percentage for ages.  I've been waiting over an hour at present.

Please could you let me know if there is a way to speed the process up?

Many thanks

Hi everyone

So, I discovered that there doesn't appear to be any software for the Zune that will run on Xp 64 bit.  Has anyone found a way to get the software to work on it?

Thanks much.
I use Winamp synchronized across multiple computers to handle all of my music and playlists, but Winamp will not synchronize with my iPod Touch because I have IOS 4 on the device.  Is there a way to automatically synchronize all of my winamp playlists with iTunes so that I can add my music to my iPod?  I understand this can be done manually by importing and exporting playlists, but I change my playlists very often and have very many of them, so this would be extremely time consuming to do every time.

Is it possible to synchronize my winamp playlists with iTunes?

Thank you
Years ago Limewire offered downloading for a set fee per year.
Anyone still use it?
What about this potential issue?
I heard Limewire has viruses, but it was suggested that the viruses are only on shady .exe files. Would "excellent quality or good quality" be ok?
what about the user number saying something like 35, are those files infected?

This is paid download site.
Hey, I downloaded a movie in MKV file format and was wondering what options I had if im trying to transfer it over to a Mac. The Mac is not connected to a network.
Also if there is a way to transfer it to a mac...what program can I use to play the MKV file on the mac? Does VLC work for Macs?
The MAC is running snow leopard I believe.
what are some good option for audio playing feature in a car for wmp or real files that could be downloaded from internet. right now there is no audio devices in the car. so it will start from scratch. prefer loud rather than ear piece.

I've got a client that purchased some training videos from ACT (they make contact management S/W) And the videos won't play on any PC in the building. They are streaming videos off of a web site. The file extension is.wvx. It's supposed to play in Windows Media player.

What happens it it opens Media player and says buffering. Somethings it stops at 3% and sometime other percentages but never plays. I can play these videos on my home PC and any {C at my office and pretty much anywhere but this clients.

They can watch you tube videos and any other type of video. They had a T1 internet connection and I'm not blocking anything on their firewall that I know of that would restrict these videos. It never gives any error just stops buffering.

I can't think of anything else to check as it plays everywhere else.
My iTunes "Genius" makes mixes that rock. I would like to be able to somehow "save" these into a playlist of their own and store a few mixes together. Also, I would like to be able to burn the songs onto a CD in mp3 format. I'm now seeing how this is possible. Is it?

I am at my wits end trying to get this collection in shape.

I need a software program that not only allows me to rewrite the tags, but actually moves the files based on the tags.  I have totally freaked out because I have deleted songs when I thought I was just removing them.  Thank god for backups.

I am trying Tune UP, however it may save the tag, but it doesn't rewrite the file name or move the file where it belongs (Artist > Album > Track-Song Title.

There are just so many different software titles which I have used and I haven't been able to find one that does it all.  Tried ITunes, WMP, etc....

Hey there, Here is my setup

Server 2008 on a box running HyperV and in it's own workgroup
1 HyperV  instance of SBS2008 running as domain controller
1 HyperV instance of server 2008 running with terminal services for clients

A typical setup of a SBS2008 unit would map shared folders to users such as 'install' and 'public'.  THese folders would beon the sbs2008 bachine.

Is this safe to do in a HyperV environment, have the shares in the sbs2008 instance as usual?

Thank you
I was wondering if they have software that allows you to record a bunch of questions and answer and combine these into an audio file you can listen to--something like an excel for audio.

I know I could take something like audacity and just pause and record over and over but there are a few problems with this:

1) What if I want to edit (rerecord) one of the questions in the middle of the file (or select a portion of my questions)

So you might say, "Just record separate files" Well that the other thing:

2) I don't want to do as little saving and editing as possible and saving 100 files is not really what I'm looking for.

I'm sure I have other requirements I can't think of at the moment.  But like I said--excel for audio--that will allow me to have complete and easy control of many very small audio clips.
The Problem; I have an account with GoToMeeting.I cannot edit any of the audio video content I record for meetings easily. I am posting a document they sent me to deliver a result so that I can edit the file which can be set to auto convert directly to a WMV file. The issue is the file coming out of GoToMeeting seems to not be a true WMV file so the file is not easily editable in Camtasia Studio 7 latest version.

Citrix -GoToMeeting technical support sent me the instructions on how to do this. Since Windows Media Encoder is not available any longer I downloaded the free version of Microsoft Expressions Encoder 4. If I need to buy Pro I will. However, I am not convinced I need to do that yet. The instructions are not clear as the version of the Encoder is new and my lack of audio video terminology is weak. So I have not been able to get this done properly.

Step 1 - Encoding the file
Ensure that the recording is in the Windows Media player format AND NOT the GoToMeeting format. You will need to have the file in the Windows Media Player format before you continue. If you have neglected to convert the recording, use the Windows Media Encoder to get the file out of the GoToMeeting format.
Use the Windows Media Encoder on the File Here are the steps to download/install Windows Media Encoder, then how to process a video with the original settings.
1. Go to
2. Click 'Continue' on the …
I have a sound distribution system for my house using an XP pro machine running WMP10.  To control it, I use notebooks as 'remote controls' by going in via Remote Desktop.

There are two strange things:

1. It all  works as expected when I RD in from an XP machine - the tracks play on the host, and the sound gets round the house nicely.  But if I RD in from a notebook running W7, I get the same interface showing up, but the playback is on my notebook, not on the host.  Any ideas?

2. I suspect that this is just a feature of WMP, but if I break the RD connection(from my XP notebook), the track stops playing, although WMP remains open on the host.

I have an IBM T40.  I have tried to boot it from three separate HDDs.  In EACH case, I get a screen that includes this message:  "PXE - E61: Media test failure, check cable."

It then says "Operating System Not Found"

I get the EXACT same message when I remove the HDD!

Two of the three HDD's I tried are bootable.

I went into teh BIOS earlier and I think I messed up the boot order.  I'm hoping someone can help me diagnose the problem and, presumably, reconfigure BIOS.

Thank you for your help.

Windows XP Pro, by the way.
I have an IBM T40.   The computer will not boot from either HD I install.   Is this a motherboard or BIOS issue,  assuming the HD's are good and properly installed?   If it's a MB issue, is there anyway to verify the IDE controller is bad?
I need to edit a WMV file that comes out of GoToMeeting. I tried using TechSmith's Camtasia Studio 7 and it has proven useless. I cannot render any of the files after editing with a wmv from out of GoToMeeting and many other versions converted through Format Factory etc.

So I was told about Microsoft Expression Encorder 4 downloaded the free version and now I cannot find the solution for silencing a section of audio. It appears I can delete an entire section of audio and video but that will not help me. I need to replace the audio with an overlay of narration from myself explaining what is happening in the video.

Can these two things be done with the free version of Expression Encoder 4.
Silence a section of audio without removing the video and can narration be added where needed. Embedding audio content to explain the video.? Please advise. Thank you.

My sister has a Salon and would like to install ceilng speakers in the suspended celing for playing backround music.  What i am looking at purchasing is:

4 Eagle 3" White Ceiling speakers 100v line 6W
30W P.A. Amplifier (4, 8, 16 Ohm and 100V speaker outputs)

Is this the sort of thing i should be looking at (her salon is not that big)?  Do i have to use 100v or could i just wire them up using the 4,8,16 Ohms connections?

What quality of sound would this setup produce?

Hope someone can advise?

Kind Regards,
I'm loading a brand new HD from scratch.   IBM T40.

To begin, it won't recognize the HD.   How do I change this in BIOS?  Will a T40 take a 250 gig HD?
I usually download most of the videos using "VideoHelper" plugin for firefox. It works for almost all kind of videos and audios.

However, when some video streams then it doesn't work.

Is there any good software (free or paid) you can recommend which can let me download the streaming videos as well as let me pause/resume the downloads.
Is there a software application or tool that will convert a flash presentation swf file to a media RSS feed?
I would like to convert existing videos recorded at real speed to videos that will playback at a faster rate.  What applications are best?  Most of my videos are WMVs, but they could be in a different format if absolutely necessary.

I understand that several players have features to play a video back at a faster rate, but my Zune does not and that is why I want new videos.

Please tell me how well these application features have worked.

Is there a way to do this in VLC?
How do I burn mp3 to a DVD-Audio format
