Setting the Media and Overwrite Protection Levels in Backup Exec 2012
This tutorial will walk an individual through setting the global and backup job media overwrite and protection periods in Backup Exec 2012.

1. Log onto the Backup Exec Central Administration Server. Examine the services. If all or most of them are stopped, then more than likely there is a login or account authorization problem.

2. Click on the Backup Exec symbol in the upper left corner, select Configuration and Settings, then Backup Exec Settings

3. Depending on the environment, the global overwrite settings choices can vary. Unchecking the Prompt Before Overwriting Imported Media will prevent the jobs from stopping and prompting for permission to overwrite. Selecting None will allow the settings on the job to control the overwrite periods.

4. Depending on the number of USB drives, change the Disk Devices disconnection state to the desired number of days. Higher for a larger number of USB drives, and lower for a smaller number of drives.

5. Once the global settings have been configured, the job protection periods must be set. On the job properties page, select Edit for the backup.

6. Select Storage on the left side, on the right side select the desired period of protection under to the desired hours, days, weeks, or years. Ensure these settings exceed the time period until after the next backup.

7. From the storage drop down, ensure the desired storage location is selected to protect. In the event of multiple USB drives, this should be a storage pool.

8. Once all of the desired settings have been selected, click OK

Backup Exec 2012 Configuring Multiple Backup Folders on One USB Drive
This tutorial will show how to configure a single USB drive with a separate folder for each day of the week. This will allow each of the backups to be kept separate preventing the previous day’s backup from being overwritten.

1. The USB drive must be shared off of another server. BackupExec 2012 does not allow job pathing to various folders on a USB directly attached to the media server.

2. Be aware that the backup jobs must me full backups. For each day, so ensure a drive with sufficient space is used.

3. On the USB drive, create a folder for each day of the week in advance of configuring the storage in BackupExec

4. To simplify adding the storage, path from the media server to the first folder on the shared USB drive and copy the path

5. Select Configure Storage, the All Storage (if necessary)

6. On the Central Administration Server click Next

7. Select Disk-Based Storage and click Next

8. Select Disk Storage and click Next

9. Name the storage. Select the name to match the day of the week for the folder being configured. Include an additional description if desired and click Next.

10. On the location, select Network Share and paste the path to the USB folder, then click Next

11. The path is validated, the click Finish

12. Repeat steps 4 through 11 for a folder on each day of the week until all of the necessary storage is configured

13. Configure backup jobs for each day of the week

14. Click Backup and Restore at the top of the page

15. Select Backup

16. In the first job, select the necessary files and folders for backup

17. Click Edit on the job properties screen for the Full option, and change the schedule to match the day of the folder that is being configured and the appropriate time for the job to run.

18. On the left, select the Storage option and in the Full option select the appropriate backup-to-disk folder for that day of the week and the correct retention period.

19. Delete the Incremental job since it cannot be configured separately.

20. Click OK twice and the job is configured

21. Repeat steps 15 through 20 for each day of the week. The Friday job is built in by default and will simply need to be edited.

22. Launch one of the jobs and ensure the backup is running and that data is being properly written to the USB drive. Select a job, right-click, and select Run Now.

Moving the Backup Exec 2012 Database to a New Server with a New Name
This tutorial will show how to configure a new Backup Exec 2012 server and move an existing database to that server with the use of the BEUtility.

1. Install Backup Exec 2012 on the new server and apply all of the latest hotfixes and service packs. Then, update the existing server to these latest versions to ensure they are on the same versions. The licenses will have to be moved, but this is a separate process.

2. Stop all services on both servers. This may take several minutes.

3. Locate the BEUtility. Typically, located in <drive letter>:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\”. Once located, double-click to launch it.

4. Highlight All Backup Exec Servers, then right-click and select New Backup Exec Server

5. Enter the name of the new Backup Exec Server. It may take several minutes for the server to appear.

6. Right-click the new server and select Copy Database

7. Browse the to the location of the database bedb_dat.mdf. This is typically located <drive letter>:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Data.

8. Next, browse the to the location of the log file bedb_log.ldf. This is typically located <drive letter>:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Data.

9. Once these two files have been located, click OK, then answer Yes to acknowledge the existing database will be overwritten.

10. The utility will then copy the files and restart the services on the new server. Once completed, the message will indicate the process was successful.

11. If the environment is running under a domain services account, the application will launch successfully. However, if this is a workgroup environment, the service account needs to be changed to the local server. To do this, launch the BEUtility on the new server.

12. In the utility, select either Change Database Service Account or Change Database Access and enter the credentials of the new server

13. Launch Backup Exec 2012 to verify the launch is successful. There will still need to be some configuration on the new server such as storage to address the specifics of the new server.

Installing and Configuring Windows Server Backup Utility
This tutorial will walk an individual through the steps necessary to install and configure the Windows Server Backup Utility.

1. Directly connect an external storage device such as a USB drive, or CD\DVD burner

2. If the device is a USB drive, ensure it is formatted as NTFS

3. From the Server Manager Management Console, select Features, then select Add Features on the right side

4. On the Select Features Screen, scroll down to the bottom and select Windows Server Backup Features, then click Next

5. Click on the Install radio button. The installation can take between five and ten minutes depending on the system. Once completed, there will be a message that the Installation Succeeded, then click Close. The system is now ready to configure backup jobs.

6. Click Start and select Administrative Tool. From the application list, select Windows Server Backup.

7. Select Action, then Backup Schedule in the Windows Server Backup administrative console

8. On the welcome page click Next

9. From the drop down menu, select the time of day for the backup to run. If multiple times of the day is desired, then select the lower option and the necessary times. Once this has been selected, click Next.

10. Select the destination device for the backup job, view the warning, and then click Yes and Next

11. Review the label of the backup destination and click Next

12. Review the backup configuration and destination. If changes are needed, select Previous, otherwise select Finish. Windows Backup Server is now configured.

Configuring Storage Pools in Backup Exec 2012
To efficiently enable the rotation of USB drives for backups, storage pools need to be created. This way no matter which USB drive is installed, the backups will successfully write without any administrative intervention.

1. Multiple USB devices need to be connected to the server, assigned individual drive letters, named, and formatted (although BE will format the device if it is not already done)

2. In the home screen, select configure storage

3. Select Next, choose Disk-based storage and click Next

4. Choose Disk Storage, then click Next. Provide a name for the USB drive. The description is optional.

5. From the local disk drop down, select one of the configured USB drives and click Next

6. Review the configuration and if everything is correct, click Finish

7. Repeat steps 2-6 for each additional USB drive connected to the system

8. Once all USB devices have been configured, select Storage from the options at the top of the main screen. Then select Configure Storage and click Next

9. Select Storage Pools and click Next

10. Select Storage Device Pool and click Next

11. Provide a name for the storage pool, a description if desired, and click Next

12. Ensure Disk Storage is selected as the type of storage pool that is being created and click Next

13. In the storage device selection screen, place a check in the box for each of the USB attached drives and click Next

14. Verify that the pool is configured as desired and click Finish

15. The pool is now ready to be assigned to any backup job

Configuring Backup Exec 2012 for VMware Image Level Backups
This tutorial will walk an individual through the steps necessary to enable the VMware\Hyper-V licensed feature of Backup Exec 2012. In addition, how to add a VMware server and configure a backup job.

1. The first step is to acquire the necessary license to enable this feature

2. Click the Backup Exec symbol in the upper left corner of the screen to launch the settings window. Then go to Installations and Licensing, and Install Options and Licenses on this Backup Exec Server.

3. On the licenses page, enter the purchased serial number and click Add (warning, not adding a serial number will enable a trial for 60 days), and click Next

4. On the options screen, locate and check the box for Agent for VMware and Hyper-V, and click Next

5. Select any additional languages other than English if desired, and select Next

6. Review the installation summary and look for any errors that will prevent the installation of the product. If everything is correct, click Install. The installation takes approximately 10 minutes.

7. Once the installation is completed, select Backup and Restore at the top of the home page and select Add VMware Server

8. Enter the name or IP address of the ESXi server and provide an optional description if desires, then select Next

9. On the system logon account, select either the root name or service account for the ESXi server. If you do not see it, then select Add/Edit and add the account. Then select Finish.

10. Double-click on the new server, and then click Test\Edit Credentials in the tool bar to verify the account can properly access the server

11. To add the first backup job, select Backup from the menu bar. The Backup to Disk (or to the other destination of choice).

12. Enter the desired name for the backup job. Click Edit under the job properties and remove the incremental backup. VMware image backups should only be full backup jobs.

13. If the selection of certain virtual machines is desires, then click Edit on server side of the backup job and uncheck any unneeded machines. Once the job has been configured as desired, click OK

14. Perform an initial test backup by selecting the newly created job and then choosing Run Next Backup Job Now from the tool bar

Changing the Backup Exec Service Account and Password
This tutorial will walk an individual through locating and launching the BEUtility application to properly change the service account username and\or password in situation where it may be necessary or where the password has been inadvertently changed.

1. Log onto the Backup Exec Central Administration Server. Examine the services. If all or most of them are stopped, then more than likely there is a login or account authorization problem.

2. Locate the BEUtility.exe application. This should be located in the installation path, which is generally in the <Drive Letter>:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec folder. The quickest way to locate it in the folder is to type “BEU” in the quick search bar.

3. Once the BEUtility.exe file has been located, double-click it to launch the application

4. Read the warning message about utilizing this utility with technical support. If you still desire to proceed, click Yes.

5. Select All Backup Exec Servers in the middle of the screen, and then select the server where the database is located. The question mark indicates the services are down

6. Right click the selected server and select Change Service Account from the list of options (generally the third option down from the top)

7. Enter the name of the user or system account and the password twice. Then click OK and then Close.

8. Right-click on the server and select Start Services

9. Once all of the services have successfully started, launch Backup Exec and ensure that the application launches successfully

Backup Exec 2012 - Configuring B2D Folders
This tutorial will walk an individual through the steps necessary to configure their installation of BackupExec 2012 to use network shared disk space.

1. Verify that the path to the shared storage is valid and that data can be written to that location

2. In the home screen, select Storage in the upper center of the screen

3. Select the server where the storage will be configured and click Next

4. On the type of storage screen, select Disk-Based Storage, not Network Storage and click Next

5. Select Disk Storage as the type of storage, unless the system has been upgraded and there are legacy folder versions to import and select Next

6. Give the disk storage a name. The description is optional.

7. Select the network share and either type or paste the path in the field and select Next

8. BackupExec will validate the path, then click Finish

9. The folder is created and now ready to be configured for backup jobs

Backup Exec 2012 – Repairing the Database with BEUtility
This tutorial will walk an individual through locating and launching the BEUtility application and how to execute it on the appropriate database.

1. Log onto the server running the Backup Exec database. In a larger environment, this would generally be the Backup Exec Central Administration Server.

2. Locate the BEUtility.exe application. This should be located in the installation path, which is generally in the <Drive Letter>:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec folder. The quickest way to locate it in the folder is to type “BEU” in the quick search bar.

3. Once the BEUtility.exe file has been located, double-click it to launch the application

4. Read the warning message about utilizing this utility with technical support. If you still desire to proceed, click Yes.

5. Select All Backup Exec Servers in the middle of the screen, and then select the server running the database in the right panel

6. Right click the selected server and select Repair Database from the list of options

7. Click OK to confirm the operation, the Yes on the screen warning that all Backup Exec services will be stopped

8. If successful, the screen will indicate that the repair is completed with no errors showing

9. To determine if the problem has been corrected, launch the Backup Exec application. Once successfully launched, test by executing the failing process to see if the problem still exists.
