Hi Friends,

Just a short note to explain why those of you who have been following me may be curious as to why I suddenly disappeared from EE all of a sudden and apparently started ignoring all of your messages for the last couple of months.

Without going into too much detail, I've basically been in and out of hospital with a rather serious condition. My last stint in hospital was 4 1/2 weeks and I'm finally now home again on a "Hospital in the Home" program where district nurses regularly visit my home and I go back into the hospital once a week for doctors reviews.

The situation I'm in isn't about to change real soon, but I'm confident I'll beat it eventually  :-)

So that's my story gang.. My apologies for the lack of replies and if I do seem to disappear, please know it has nothing to do with Experts Exchange forums, which I continue to thoroughly enjoy.

Best..

Andrew

Hello, Apple Geeks & EE Experts!

Please update your Apple devices when you get home (iOS 11.1 & macOS High Sierra 10.13.1). This update is to fix the WPA2 KRACK vulnerability (the Wi-Fi issue). Kudos to John Hurst (one of EE's top Experts) for sounding the horn.

Thank you for your very gracious comment. I appreciated it. IOS 11.1 is working just fine on both our phones here. IOS 11.1 is also supposed to protect against KRACK Wi-Fi attacks.

I seem to recall that it is possible to get instant help from an expert via Experts Exchange.  Is that still the case?  What I need is MSAccess VBA and SQL.

Hello, EE Experts!

I wanted to make sure that all Apple users understand what's going on with the new Wi-Fi (WPA2) vulnerability "KRACK."

Apple is working on a fix to roll out as soon as possible to all its users. They've stated that there is a fix for this vulnerability in the beta versions, but that the fix is not in the latest update you have on your device.

So, what can you do?

Don't connect to Wi-Fi at hotels, coffee shops, or anywhere outside your place of business or home. Even at your house or area of work use a VPN.

Wait, even at my house?

Yes. Essentially the attacker can read all the information that is being transmitted wirelessly throughout your home. That said, if you use a VPN you're making an encrypted tunnel around the information you're sending and not relying on the WPA2 protocol that should keep your data safe. So, even if the attacker is looking at the data on your home network, the VPN is making it unreadable.

Also, if you're out and about, please turn off the Wi-Fi capability on your iPhone or iPad. By turning off the Wi-Fi, you're making your iPhone or iPad solely dependent upon cellular data, which is not susceptible to this attack.

Where can I get a VPN?

I use Encypt.me because it's fast, simple, relatively cheap, and works on all of my devices without In-app purchases. However, there are free VPNs that you can grab …

Hello, EE Experts!

If you haven't already updated your iOS devices to 11.0.3, please do so. I've tested it out (it's only been out two days), and it seems stable. That's it! Take care everyone.

Side note: Be on the lookout for my article on the Apple Watch 3 Series with LTE, since my wife and I are pushing them to the limits to give you the best information on whether or not you should buy one.

Oh, here's another technology I'd like to learn: Google Apps Scripting. There's a lot of common things I do with Google Docs & Sheets on a regular basis and being able to automate some of it seems pretty handy. I know EE has a ton of great stuff about VBA scripting for Excel, Word, and such, but I mostly work in Google Apps and I've had no info at all about scripting for those products. (I honestly expected the Google apps might not have been mature enough to support scripting, but I was completely wrong about that!)

Just looked up Google's documentation site for it, and the whole thing is based on JavaScript (I'm not good at JavaScript, but I'm at least familiar with some basics). That also means I've got plenty of experts in-office and on the site for when I need help :-)

Will have to start experimenting with it this weekend!

Good morning, EE Experts!

I read an interesting article about both Macs & PCs being vulnerable to a firmware attack. To sum up the piece, some Macs weren't updating their firmware when their dutiful owners were performing common updates. Once notified of the issue Apple immediately jumped on it and fixed the problems. In short, if you update to macOS High Sierra your Mac will automatically check every week for firmware updates. As for you PC enthusiast, I recommend that you check your manufacturer's website for any new firmware updates. Have a great Monday everyone and take care.

iOS 11Good morning, EE Experts!

Apple released iOS 11.0.1 yesterday, which fixes the pesky Exchange bug that was stopping users from emailing out. This does not squash all bugs or problems found with iOS 11 since its release, but that doesn't mean it's still not a solid update from iOS 10. That's it for the big Apple news!

Side note: I'll be submitting my iOS 11 tips and tricks article to the EE gods and goddesses soon, so be on the lookout for it.

UpdateGood morning, EE!

Today is the release of macOS High Sierra, the OS that many of us Apple geeks want on our Macs as of yesterday. It will be available for download at 1 PM EST, so make sure that you have your ducks in order before you make the switch.

Here is a short list of things to consider before upgrading:

1) Update your antivirus application and perform a full scan. What? Your Mac doesn't have an antivirus? Well, then you might be carrying malware with you to the new OS. Even if your Mac hasn't been showing the classic signs of being infected, you might be smuggling Windows viruses into your new operating system. (No, Windows viruses don't infect Macintosh computers, but that's no reason to keep them around.)

Side note: It's important to know that malware is growing for Mac with no end in sight. While some purists believe that it's still fine to run Macs without antivirus, there are more of us security guys/gals sounding the alarm that times have changed and Macs are no longer impervious. Lastly, if you use your Mac for any business related functions, you're more likely than not sharing documents with your colleagues who are using Windows systems. Meaning that you don't want to be the person who hands them a work altering piece of malware.

2) Make a Time Machine backup.

3) Manually move significant folders onto an Ext HDD in case your Time Machine backup fails at some point in the future. This extra step ensures that you're …

Question Hijacking:  The Experts in EE are professional and polite.  Sometimes maybe too polite.  What is the reduction in response rate if a question has already had but ONE response?  Is it diminished?  It must be.

I'd hate to blame striving for "points" is a reason for responding; so I won't.

Yet, we sometimes get responses that miss the point (don't answer the question), are tangential, are patronizing.  These responses, if early in the hoped-for responses, reduce the likelihood of getting a good response that *is* on point.  So, a few suggestions:
- if you don't know the answer, wait for other responses before you post.
- if you don't know the answer, say so.
- if you think you might be responding to a neophyte and your intended answer reflects that view, re-read the question.
- Focus on answering the question and not on "THE PROBLEM" that may only be there for background.
I'm sure there are others suggestions that folks could add.
The value of EE to all of us is helped by encouraging responses.

I think that is a perception but not entirely reality
Well, I've sure had answers and threads that had but one responder.  So I rather have to say this is more than perception.  I may be biased by other venues where it's MORE prevalent.  I end up that it's more than perception and worthy of consideration.  Thus the suggestions.

If we are posting too much background information, that just really gets in the way.
Yes.  Examples can be misleading as well as possibly helpful.  Over time I've tried to do less.  Over time I've tried to make the actual question clearer.  When one does that then it's particularly frustrating to see the bandwidth used up.

If there is an answer you don't like or understand, take a step back, close the browser and come back to it later.
You're right of course.  My baggage is when clear questions are ignored or sidestepped.  My favorite baggage boils down to: "Is that a Yes or a No?"

The original post wasn't so much a complaint as a set of suggestions for more positive interaction.  I hope it was taken that way.  But the title *was* intended to get some attention.

We are planning on some updates to the question workflow to address some of these concerns. Some Experts are too polite, not wanting to add a comment unless they *know* they have the best solution. Others will try anything, presumably in an effort to help. Many Experts skip over questions that already have comments with the assumption that the user has already been helped.

We are looking at how we can improve ways for authors to indicate their solution hasn't been reached yet and for Experts to be able to indicate they need more information from an author.
