File Sharing Software

File sharing is the practice of distributing or providing access to digital media, such as computer programs, multimedia (audio, images and video), documents or electronic books. Common methods of storage, transmission and dispersion include manual sharing utilizing removable media, centralized servers on computer networks, World Wide Web-based hyperlinked documents, distributed peer-to-peer networking (P2P) and cloud-based file syncing.

I'm thinking that one approach to protecting files is to make them write-protected most of the time.
- One idea would be to use a User Profile that has no write privileges - but then there's really no need for a User to be logged into the computer anyway.  But maybe it could be done (i.e. logged in) as a default.
- Another idea would be to switch the permissions on the drive (but propagating that might take too long).

The idea is to switch the capability, write some files and switch back.  Thus, minimizing the write window in time.
Probably a scheduled task.  Perhaps a Powershell script.

I'm looking for ideas.

I would like to convert this script, which is meant for CuteFTP, to work on with Windows 10 ftp, without any special software.
Is this possible?

Set MySite = CreateObject("CuteFTPPro.TEConnection")

' Initialize remote server host name, protocol, port, etc.
MySite.Host = "xxxx.xxxxxxx.com"
MySite.Protocol = "FTP"
MySite.Port = xx
MySite.Retries = xx
MySite.Delay = xx
MySite.MaxConnections = 4
MySite.TransferType = "AUTO"
MySite.DataChannel = "DEFAULT"
MySite.AutoRename = "OFF"
' WARNING!!! SENSITIVE DATA: user name and password.
MySite.Login = "xxx"
MySite.Password = "xxx"
MySite.SocksInfo = ""
MySite.ProxyInfo = ""
' Connect to remote server
MySite.Connect

MySite.RemoteFilterInclude = "*.csv"

MySite.GetList "/out", "", "%NAME"
FileList = MySite.GetResult
FileArray = Split(FileList, vbCrLf)
For Each FileName In FileArray
    If FileName <> "" Then
        MySite.Download "/out/" & FileName, "\\xxx\xxx\xxx\" & FileName
        If CBool(MySite.LocalExists ("\\xxx\xxx\xxx\" & FileName)) Then
            MySite.RemoteRemove "/out/" & FileName
        End If
    End If
Next

MySite.Disconnect
MySite.Close

I guess I missed it... but:
We've been using Guest account share permissions and security in certain small offices where the internal trust level is high.
Not the best security but not a topic for discussion here....

Until now, I'd not noticed that the "Turn off password protected sharing" wouldn't "stick".
Yet, I've read that this is a result of the Guest account being disabled or missing.

I have an installation of Windows 10 Pro 64 with the latest updates: Version 64 OS Build 14393.969.
The Guest account does not show in the list of user accounts.
It appears that Guest Sharing and Security settings don't allow access to file shares.

I have another installation that's the same version.
The same things apply.

1) is this a correct observation?
2) when did it come about?

I can but wonder why it hasn't caused us trouble until now......

On my windows 2012 r2 server I turned on the file object access to success within the local group policy. Without setting any auditing on the folder, everything is being audited on the server for file additions and deletions and therefore filling the logs quickly.

Every article I find says to set the security settings under auditing to specify what should be log. Why is everything getting logged regardless and how do I fix it?

I'm comparing & evaluation between using sftp & SendThisFile  to transfer files containing
sensitive data between our organization & a trusted vendor.

Any comments & comparisons and queries on how to enhance SendThisFile is appreciated.

My concerns of using SendThisFile is

a) yet another party & they may have access to the files (though they may certify they don't
   access the files) : so just like Accellion, wouldn't such 'secure files transfer' vendors have
   access to the files, esp if they do take backups?

b) sftp is controlled by us & we are the sftp client while the trusted vendor is the sftp server
    so we can verify their encryption, patch levels etc, isn't it?

c) with our own sftp, we plan to still encrypt the data file (but our trusted vendor may have
    difficulty processing it), so at this feasibility study stage, we may ultimately go the way of
    not encrypting the file : so if this is the ultimate decision, would using sftp be better?

d) in terms of turnaround time in delivery the data files, I think sftp is faster as less parties
      involved, isn't it?

e) what about backup of data files?

We are sending over public Internet.

Below are some write-ups of SendThisFile:

Sendthisfile.com is a secure site and transfer using 128 bit SSL encryption.
It enables a confirmation email to be generated when a file is sent and downloaded, and allows you to send to multiple recipients (by using the "enter" …

Is there a way to effectively block file sharing sites for a limited # of users.
I imagine if I wanted to block for everyone I could change some firewall settings or use filtering software but what about for only one user?

I need to set up 3 WinSCP sessions which will monitor and when new files arrive they are automatically transferred to a remote server and then delete the original archive files.

I have set up one connection but getting confused with all the different options and references to commands.

I have now chosen the option to 'Keep remote directory up to date' but can not see an option to delete the original local files once they have been copied OR the option to archive them to a folder called ARCHIVED for example & how to create another 2 instances for different locations.

Hi All

I have posted previously about a automated FTP program of which I am going to use WinSCP however I have a number  of different directories that I need to transfer files from.

Firstly I do not understand the arguments and technical side of running multiple instances of WinSCP and secondly to make things tidier I was hoping someone could recommend a simple program that monitors these directories and as files arrive moves the files from each directory into 1 single folder for WinSCP to then pick up.

Any recommendations will be appreciated

I have the latest version of the VUZE client.  All of a sudden, I am no longer able to download torrent files.  When I download a torrent file and attempt to open it, VUZE no longer automatically opens...  If I open VUZE then click on the torrent file I want, nothing shows up in VUZE.

I uninstalled VUZE and reinstalled.  This did not fix the problem.

It should be noted that I did download Express VPN like a month ago.  Is there something that I need to change in VUZE to use / not use the VPN client?

Hi Experts,

I know when someone has an Access app open with one version (lets say A2003) and another user has a different version (A2010), then it will not open just by double clicking on the shortcut of the file, the only way is to open Access and browse to that file.

Wondering if there is a way to create a shortcut that will allow that, perhaps performing the above, meaning should open access and then open that file?

PS. when an app is heavily used I have each user have their own copy, however this is a simple file with only one form and usually not used very much.

Hi All

I would really appreciate if someone can advise how I can automate SFTP transfers using FileZilla

I do see various tools on the internet claiming to do this but as not heard them of I don't to install adhoc programs due to security risks.

The reason I would like to use FileZilla as it allows me to connect to remote servers which other FTP clients I have tried are failing to connect due to some sort of SSH config / security protocols

Ideally I am looking at a free solution (aren't we all)

I'm looking for a recommendation for a clean, user-friendly way to share larger files in an enterprise environment.  These files would be uploaded by users not in the organisation.  We've hosted an SFTP server in the past, but I could never create instructions simple enough for most users to access it without issue.  Solutions like Dropbox and One Drive work great when sharing small files via the web interface, but I've found that most users struggle when using the desktop app or mapping a drive to these services for larger file transfer.  In my personal use, Mega has been a very clean solution, but I'm hesitant to use this in a business setting.

What do you think is the best solution to this problem?

Thanks

Hey guys

We have a 7 person office and we use Dropbox to share files. We are concerned about security. What's a better alternative solution to collaborate on files? We are a law firm if that helps.

I want to know is there a way to map a SMB share across the internet with a different port via windows for a NAS or a Linux server running SMB.
If there is no native way in windows is there a way with an application?

Is there a way to use dropbox to share a file to allow anyone with a link to edit the excel spreadsheet?
I want to send a link to like 70 people and I don't want to manually add email addresses for everyone.

Hi Experts,

I'm trying to create an ADE on the server and gettinng the msg "File is in use.." (See attached).
However when I check the server under manage open files, I see nobody have that file open.
Is there a way to release the lock without restarting the server?
Or if I can at least see who is posing the lock, that would also be of a help.

Thanks

I had this question after viewing DFS Incorrect Referrals.

Randomly (it seems) some workstations connect to a remote DFS target when accessing the namespace "corpfiles" folder "IT".

We have three folders in the namespace:

IT
OfficeInstaller
Fileshare

I caught one in the act today and checked the DFS tab on a folder in the IT folder.  The local server was listed but not active.  I installed RSAT, rebooted and ran dfsutil /pktinfo on the workstation (stationary system).  After rebooting the target showed correctly in the properties however the following results seemed odd.

C:\Users\admin>dfsutil /pktinfo

I installed Cerebrus ftp server and using FileZilla and FTP Voyager as clients.
I can connect and browse the server over port 21 without any issue.

When using SSL/TLS connection over port 990 I can connect (Port open in firewall), but the ftp client cannot retrieve the directory listing.
I tried over active and passive connections with no luck.

Is there any other configuration on the firewall that could prevent directory listing over secure FTP ?  If not is there anything else on the ftp client I have to setup in order to get the directory listing to work ?

Hello and Good Evening Everyone,

          I am needing step by step instructions for pairing via Bluetooth a Visual Land Premier 10 tablet running Windows 8.1 with an Acer laptop running Windows 10.  I wish to send files via Bluetooth on the Visual Land Premier 10 tablet running Windows 8.1 and to setup the Acer laptop running Windows 10 to receive files via Bluetooth.  My main concern here relates to the hard drive of the tablet because it is almost completely full.   Most likely there will be a certain amount of free space required for successful transfer of files.

          Any suggestions for carrying out file sharing via Bluetooth will be greatly appreciated.

          Thank you
