Home Security

Home security includes the hardware and software in place to monitor and protect property, and personal security practices. The hardware can include the doors, locks, alarm systems, lighting, motion detectors, and cameras systems; the software can include applications connected to smart systems in your home or business or electronic surveillance systems provided by vendors. Personal security practices would be ensuring doors are locked, alarms activated, windows closed and many other routine tasks which act to prevent misfortunes.

No security measures warrant 100% as a "silver bullet". The truth is we also cannot assume anything but a defensive and vigilance posture. Adopt no trust by default and reveal in assumption. Only assume anonymity or invisibility in the reverse. Safeguard your privacy!

A few customers have recently asked my thoughts on Password Managers.  As Security is a big part of our industry I was initially very hesitant and sceptical about giving a program all of my secret passwords.  But as I was getting asked about them more and more I decided to trial one so I could offer a better opinion.  The one I decided to trial was called 'LastPass'.  It came highly recommended from a couple of my Web Developer friends who now use it for every website that requires some form of login!

In addition to the recommendation I did some research on the program to give me a little more confidence and understanding – I suggest reading a few reviews prior to jumping into anything.

What is a Password Manager?
A password manager is a program that helps a user to better manage and organise their passwords for online accounts.  Most Password managers store your passwords and then encrypts them.  The programs then require the user to enter a Master Password to decrypt them before they can be access.

What is the benefit of having a Password Manager?:
If you’re anything like me you will have lots of online logins, then over time this can become difficult to manage.  I found myself trying multiple login credentials on sites before finding the one that works, eventually getting there but sometimes I would have to do a password reset.
Using a Password Manager takes away this problem.  All you have to do is remember the one password and the program …

Anti-virus software today is fairly sophisticated, but virus writers are often a step ahead of the software, and new viruses are constantly being released that current anti-virus software cannot recognize.

The key to anti-virus software is detection. Once an infected file has been detected, it can sometimes be repaired. If not, the file can at least be quarantined so that the viral code will not be executed.

The difficulty here is that generic virus detection is inadequate for current and new viruses, and so anti-virus software must be constantly updated with new lists of viruses. Currently, when a new virus is discovered (unfortunately only through execution,) samples are sent to virus analysis centers. These centers analyze the virus and extract a unique string from the virus that will identify it. This and other information about the virus is added into a database that users can then download. However, should generic virus detection ever become 100% effective, then the other steps (removal/repair) should be greatly simplified.

Virus Detection Methods

There are four major methods of virus detection in use today: scanning, integrity checking, interception, and heuristic detection. Of these, scanning and interception are very common, with the other two only common in less widely-used anti-virus packages. Unfortunately, while scanning is very effective against known viruses, it is completely incapable of dealing with new viruses, forcing anti-virus …

This should be mentioned that the only companies benefiting new viruses are Antivirus companies.
They make viruses and release the update a few days after.
An AV company also has the trouble of adding other viruses from other companies to the database :D

They must have the people who do the alien cover ups in charge of virus writing too, they are the only ones who can go this long without anyone finding out (for sure). I loved that rumor in the 90's too.

This article is to help the many people wanting to know what security systems the pros use and the ins and outs of a basic security system.  I have seen so many questions and made so many comments on this subject so I though this article would help.  As a sales rep for security systems for many years I can tell you the basic equipment used and what not to use and why.  I am trying to keep this brief, so keep in mind there are going to be many things I don’t talk about such as partitioning a security system, wireless sensor detail, zone detail, and so forth.

First, the most popular question is what to use.  I am not trying to sell any equipment for anyone (I am just trying just give you a starting place), but here are the facts from my knowledge.  The most widespread security system used for home security systems is the Ademco brand (made by Honeywell) and has been for the past 10 to 15 years.  Just do a search on the internet for Ademco it should take you right to their site.  Next in line would be DSC Brand (made by Tyco who also owns ADT security systems).  Most nationwide and local security companies will usually carry and install one of the two systems.

Next, which product and why.  By far the most commonly used residential system is an Ademco Vista-15P control panel with the DSC PowerSeries 8-32 being next inline.  There are many other choices from Ademco and DSC, but the main difference will usually be as follows:
•      Does it support wireless sensors (needed …
