Illustration Software

Illustration software is distinguished from photo-editing software in that the result is an original construction, rather than the manipulation of a photograph. Illustration software uses vector-based tools such that the content is stored digitally as resolution-independent mathematical formulae describing lines (open paths), shapes (closed paths), and color fills, strokes or gradients. Vector paths are constructed of anchor points and path segments. Illustration tools typically create precise lines, shapes and patterns with well-defined edges and are superb for working with complex constructions such as maps and typography.

I was given a logo in the form of an Adobe Illustrator (.ai) file.  I have Illustrator CS5 and I can open the file but the logo itself is centered and has a bunch of empty space around all sides.  When I save for web as jpeg or png the space is preserved there as well.  I don't know Illustrator very well but I would like to know how to remove the extra spacing.  I hope this makes sense to an Illustrator guru.

Thank you!

I wish to have a drawing that I can print out on two 8.5 x 11.0 inches and have them taped together to make one physical 8.5 x 22.0 inches. This drawing will be the basis for assembling an electrical wiring harness that will fit the project pre assembled and without a hassle.

The size of the end project is just fine at 8.5 x 22" but I wish to use the dimensional tool to illustrate in INCHES the various lengths. The actual length of the project is around 50 feet. I don't want a 50 foot blueprint obviously. How do I accomplish this so that the actual printout is the size I want BUT the dimensions show as inches or feet and inches or any unit that I know are representing inches?

My problem is trying to determine how to depict dimensions that are a great deal smaller than the actual printout will be. So, basically I need to know how to indicate to Corel the size of the drawing, the units I should use and really basic type questions. I obviously am far from proficient in Corel but simply do not have the time to learn Corel for this single mini project.

Please ask any questions you need to have answered for clarification.

The issue I am having is when I "select all", it selects the art-board. Using the direct selection tool on the the artwork, it selects the art-board.   Using the selection tool on the the artwork, it selects the art-board.  I guess I am overlooking something. Thank you for your help.  --  Joe

I placed text with a white background on the image in Photoshop. Then I used the magic eraser to remove the white background.
But white remains within some letters, such as O and d.
Is there some quick way to remove the white from the letters?

Hi.

For background information, the initial requirements and my selected solution, you will need to refer to my previous question at:
https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/29021535/Strategy-for-developing-proprietary-project-information-on-a-secure-computer.html

From what I've understood so far, and from my further investigation, I will need to then upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for encryption and better control of whitelisting and blacklisting.

My additional requirements are:

Windows Pro upgrade.
Microsoft Office 365 subscription and a limited set of application software (TBD).
I want to eliminate all unnecessary pre-loaded application software and bloatware (when should I do this).
(I will avoid using admin account as default user account.)
I want easy control of whitelisting and blacklisting, hopefully, without needing a lot of additional technical knowledge.

With those additional requirements, today's question is:
Suggest the necessary implementation strategy with sequence of steps, and any other utility software that might be required.

Thank you,
WaterStreet

Hi.

I'm proposing a consulting engagement for a client with a proprietary project, which requires that I keep the project's work away from the Internet, due to confidentiality requirements.

I have two windows 10 computers (always updated) that I use on the Internet, and do not want to use any of them for this purpose. I'm thinking of buying a new laptop computer to be used exclusively for the new project.  I use McAfee Total Protection, Malwarebytes, Hitman Pro, and Epic Privacy Browser (proxy mode) on the two computers connected to the Internet.

I'd prefer to use Microsoft Word and Excel, though I'm not attached to Microsoft products. I'll also need some specialty software (such as 3-D illustration software, and flowchart software), all of which I hope to load via CD/DVD, or transfer the downloaded installation files via flash drive from one of my online computers.

I will create, update, encrypt and store all the proprietary information files on flash drives that will never be inserted, if or when the new computer needs to connect to the Internet.

What what do you think of this strategy for keeping the proprietary project information secure?

Thanks

I am opening .eps files created from a CAD application that contain Helvetica.  My computer clearly has the font installed because other applications can use it and read it.  Adobe Illustrator does not see the Helvetica family nor does it show up in the list of available system fonts (within Illustrator).  The Windows/Fonts folder does show the Helvetica font.

Hello, I'm trying to reproduce the text you see in the uploaded image.

This is the text I'd like to reproduce as closely as possible.
I can't find a font similar to this one and most of all I don't know how to create that sort of indent effect on the right of each letter.

The tools I have access to are Photoshop and Illustrator.

I hope somebody can help me.

Thanks.

I may be delusional, but I am facing an issue that I personally do not see as a fair policy regarding upgrades. Am I being scammed by a manufacturer or is this normal: I just purchased an upgrade from Coreldraw X7 to what was the new iteration of Coreldraw. X8 I have only had the product approximately two weeks. By chance I discovered that they JUST came  out with a new version: Coreldraw 2017. I phoned inquiring how I could get the latest version (free I expected) and was faced with a demand for $25.00 for a download key!! $25. to upgrade to a new version after only two weeks??? ?They additionally wanted $15. for a physical CD of the software which I did get with my new purchase. This, to me, seems like a very harsh money grubbing policy that came as a shock to me. I could certainly understand if I had used the product for even several weeks, but less than one month? Am I being ripped off by the manufacturer or is this a normal situation for software manufacturers? I naturally am extremely disappointed by what I am being told by the company. I have paid for EVERY upgrade to Coreldraw for the past 15 years or so and never faced this type of issue.

Just as an aside: I believe in paying for ALL the software that I use. I also realize that there are many hackers out in the world that do not pay for all the software that they use. I wonder what percentage of these hackers essentially steal the product solely due  to perceived outrageous and unfair policies such as I …

Thanks

In inDesign by holding command and clicking I can select the element behind the other. In illustrator I have to lock the top item to select the one below. It works but is time consuming and can become confusing. Anyone know a short cut?

I'm on a Mac running CS6. Thanks in advance.

I have a number of pngs of detailed photos such as the one attached with transparent backgrounds. I need to outline each one with a line around the perimeter of the photo that is a PATH. I can add a stroke effect to the PNG in Photoshop that looks correct, but because it is an effect it does not seem that I can convert that stroke to a path (I need the path for laser cutting). I have available to me and a working knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, and Inkscape. The best solution would be in Inkscape if feasible since I hope to share the process with others who may not have access to Adobe software, but any (hopefully relatively straightforward) solution would do at this point.

I'm driving myself a bit nuts trying to do something that I think should be simple. Help! Please. Thanks so so much.

Hi
Does anyone know of a good tool to do benefit logic mapping, which is visual (flow-chart type) mapping of activities with objectives.
I use visio at the moment but its slow going when doing in a workshop, and its only provides 2d info.  A good tool would have extra features such as allow extra information about each box to be provide in another layer.

Thanks

See this screenshot:

The artist made a whole bunch of pages. They aren't on individual artboards.

Notice the white rectangle. That's the only art board in there

When I "save as"  to PDF, I basically get only one blank page.

I'm using Illustrator CS6. I believe the artist did this in a previous version.

The artist was able to export this as a PDF, so I don't quite know what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks for your help!

Hi,

I am looking a vector format for the attached image, note that this is slightly unusual version to normal world maps as I am applying it to a sphere. Would anyone know what this is called (this version against other versions) and has anyone come across any stock library for this particular texture map

Regards

Using Notepad++ Version 6.4.5 is there a way to make the first character of each row of data an "Open Parenthesis" and the last 2 characters of each row a "Close Parenthesis" followed by a comma ?

In other words:

BEFORE

'   ABC Bank', '0180','PAYROLL'

AFTER

('   ABC Bank', '0180','PAYROLL'),

Interactively Combine Shapes with the Shape Builder Tool in Adobe Illustrator
Illustrator's Shape Builder tool will let you combine shapes visually and interactively. This video shows the Mac version, but the tool works the same way in Windows. To follow along with this video, you can draw your own shapes or download the file I use: www.flisser.com/classfiles/shape-builder-exercise.zip.

Please check out the steps I've listed below.

1. Technique 1: combining two adjacent objects - Select two adjacent objects.

Several overlapping shapes
Before combining two objects, decide what fill color you want and make that the fill color in the toolbar. One way to do this is to select an object that has a fill and stroke already applied.

color-boxes.jpg
Two selected overlapping objects

2. Click the Shape Builder tool in the toolbar (or press Shift + M).

3. Roll the mouse over the selected objects. Notice the shading, which means the objects are ready to have the tool applied.

Object with shading

4. Drag from the first object to the second object.

The objects are now combined, and the fill is the color in the toolbox, and the stroke is the color of the first object’s stroke.

5. Undo (Ctrl + Z in Windows or Command + Z on the Mac).

6. Now drag from the second object to the first object.

As before, the objects are now combined, and the fill is the color in the toolbox. But this time, the stroke is the color of the second object’s stroke.

After dragging over two shapes
So the stroke color of the object you start dragging from becomes the stroke color of the combined object.

7. Undo, then go on to the next technique…

----

1. Technique 2: overlap of two adjacent objects. Again, select two adjacent objects.

2. Roll the mouse pointer onto the overlapping area, and notice just that area is shaded.

Overlapping area selected

3. Click, and that area becomes a new object.

After clicking the overlapping area

4. Click the Selection tool (or press V).

5. Drag the new shape out of the way so you can see.

There is now a hole where it used to be, and the new shape has a single stroke color. The stroke colors around the hole match the stroke colors of each object.

New shape dragged away----

1. Technique 3: using an object as a cookie cutter - Undo about three times so you get the original shapes back, and go to the next technique…

2. Select the same two objects as before.

With the Shape Builder tool active, hold the Alt key in Windows or the Option key on the Mac, then drag from the overlapping area into one of the selected shapes.

The overlapping area and the shape you dragged onto now disappear.

Removed circle

3. Undo, then Alt + drag or Option + drag from the overlapping area onto the other object.

You get a similar result.

4. Undo so you get the original shapes back, and go to the next technique…

Dear EE experts,

We would like to ask for some photo expertise on how to create image similar to the attached photo, I'm not used to Adobe Illustrator, but I'm used with Photoshop. Or any programs that can create image like that?

Thank you and hope to hear soon...

Hi, i have received a few graphics (vectors) from a graphic designer.

The graphics are the full size of the canvas in Illustrator.

I want to export the graphics to a certain height in .png format. Is this possible?

In Illustrator, I've resized my artboard to a final size. Now I need to resize everything inside the artboard. I want to highlight all of these elements and then drag the size up to a certain point. This means the elements need to stay proportional as I drag them.

The problem is that when I highlight all of the elements, the artboard keeps highlighting as well. How do I highlight just the elements so I can drag and resize them?

I'm trying to create a rope style brush in Illustrator. I'm following the tutorial at: http://vectorguru.com/tutorials/012-drawing-vector-rope-in-illustrator.html. I'm getting varying results. In one of my efforts the Pathfinder/Unite appears to work, but when I do an Object-->Path-->Outline Stroke, all three pieces get outlined. When I'm able to get by that part and apply the Pathfinder/Intersect, I lose all the strokes. Is there something wrong in the tutorial or, more likely, what might I be doing wrong? The attached file is how the project looks after Object-->Path-->Outline Stroke.
