Illustration Software

Illustration software is distinguished from photo-editing software in that the result is an original construction, rather than the manipulation of a photograph. Illustration software uses vector-based tools such that the content is stored digitally as resolution-independent mathematical formulae describing lines (open paths), shapes (closed paths), and color fills, strokes or gradients. Vector paths are constructed of anchor points and path segments. Illustration tools typically create precise lines, shapes and patterns with well-defined edges and are superb for working with complex constructions such as maps and typography.

One of a set of tools we are providing to everyone as a way of saying thank you for being a part of the community.

In this article I share how to make a vector texture from a digital image.

Vector textures are useful because they are scalable without losing in image quality. I'll be using Adobe Photoshop to adjust the highlights and contrast of a digital image, then I will use Adobe Illustrator to create the vector texture using the image trace feature. You should be able to use any version of Adobe Photoshop to adjust the brightness and contrast.

For the second part, we will be using the Image Trace functionality in Illustrator CS6. Image Trace used to be called Live Trace and was introduced in Illustrator CS2. With the release CS6 the people at Adobe changed the name to Image Trace. On inspection the tool looks different but the concept is the same. The trace option makes an attempt at tracing the different parts of an image. The images used in this article are provided by our good friend, Morgan Finley (morganfinley).
FinalOutcome.pngStep 1: Choose a photo
When choosing a photo look for something that has a lot of texture packed into a small area with a good amount of contrast. Images I've used before could be a close up shot of a stucco wall, tree bark or rusted piece of metal. In this case I'm using a picture that Morgan took of our cinderblock wall here at the office.

I decided to focus on the center of the bricks and cropped out the cement …

In this article, I’ll explain how I make a clipping mask out of several separate vector objects by using the Compound Path option in Adobe Illustrator. A compound path in Illustrator allows grouping of separate objects into one set of vector paths to manipulate. The Adobe help site has some useful information here on what a compound path is.  I will use text to create a clipping mask over some stars in this article.
Finished.png
Step 1. Write Your Text
In this instance I use a big bold font face. Something that will easily show the masked images underneath.

Step 2: Create Outlines of the text
When working with fonts, to make a clipping mask you will need to Create Outlines of the fonts. Select "Type" in the top menu > select "Create Outlines".

Note: I usually will duplicate the font before creating outlines. That way I have a quickly editable font to rework from.
OutlinedText.pngStep 3: Create items that will be masked
I created stars by using the star generating tool (found by clicking and holding the rectangle tool). Then I grouped them and copied them a few times.

Stars.pngStep 4: Overlap items
Select the outlined text and drag it over the stars. I look to try and fill as much of the letters with the stars. Next select the outlined text and bring it forward so that it sits on top of the stars. Select “Object” in top menu > Select “Arrange” > Select “Bring to Front”

Because of still there more are people in the world using Adobe Illustrator older versions like CS & CS2 I wish to forward this article..

Since a long time Adobe Illustrator CS, CS2 has released, sometimes that there was a problem when someone trie to save the illustrator file it returns a message and that says "An unknown error has occurred" (especially when text has been used).

This is a headache to graphic designers because they are unable to save files they designed and to technicians because there is no solution. They might have to clean reinstall the whole operating system and Adobe software to resolve this issue.

I have not seen yet this error in Illustrator CS3 & CS4. However there are questions in the internet it is in CS3 & CS4 also. There are more questions & inquiries regarding this issue in adobe web site and many of other references.

http://forums.adobe.com/message/1265720
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Photos_Graphics/Illustration/Adobe_Illustrator/Q_24017274.html

Since present there is not the solution made by Adobe. Others also haven't been identified the problem yet. They are advising to resolve by installing updates, installing distiller, deleting configuration files, etc...

Problem is, anyhow deleted the content of a folder called "CMaps" in
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts\Reqrd

lllustrator complete uninstallation & reinstallation is also not success.

1. Choose and Re-size an Image For Better Performance

See image 1 for reference
Open an image in Photoshop to resize it. You will want to reduce the image size so Illustrator can handle the effects without freezing up or taking forever. I chose an image size of 500px for the width, 72ppi for the resolution. Then I chose save for web and devices and picked jpeg high quality to reduce the image size even more.
"once you figure out the procedure you can pick a higher resolution image, I am picking a smaller file size so you can experiment without having to wait as long for the effects to take place inside Illustrator"

2. Open or Place Your Image in Illustrator

Open Adobe Illustrator. Choose File>New from the top toolbar. I chose a document size just a little larger than the photo we saved from Photoshop. Now go to the top toolbar and choose File>Place, and navigate to the Photoshop jpeg you created.

3. Flatten Transparency

jeremyjared7,
Thank you for taking the time to put this article together.

This makes what could be quite a complex process in Illustrator very simple.

Well done.
