Hello. I have a couple of questions to ask you regarding the 'nature' of the two popular Open Source office products OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice 3:

1. What are the differences (major issues and minor discrepancies) like features, functions, settings, and reliability between the latest versions of OpenOffice.org 3and LibreOffice 3 to date? (Yes, I am being highly technical here.)

2. Along the same ideology as question number one above, which one of two Open Source office products has 'more features' versus the 'differences' as I have asked above?

3. What Open Source office product came from the other product? ...or which one came first and which product is a derivative of the other regarding the release to the general public?

4. Along the same ideology as question number  three above, when was each Open Source office product 'initially' released to the general public date wise?

Please reply to my questions.  If necessary, please provide your own best possible well written, detailed and documented website links in your reply.

DO NOT USE LMGTFY.com or similar-like web links in your reply. I consider its use very unprofessional for EE experts. If you do, you will not get acknowledged and receive no credit.

Please reply.

Thank you!

Hello. I have a question to ask you.

Regarding the open source office products/programs like the two popular programs, the latest OpenOffice.org 3 and LibreOffice 3 and specifically their subprogram for OpenOffice.org 3 called "Text Document"/"OfficeOffice.org Writer" and LibreOffice 3 called "text Document"/"LibreOffice Writer", how does a user set the default font a user wishes to ALWAYS HAVE SET WHEN A USER OPENS *NEW* text document in BOTH popular programs (whether or not their methods to set a default font are different or not)?

Please provide your own detailed steps with suggestions, hints, and tips; and/or the best possible well written, detailed and documented website links hopefully with images and demonstrations along with the instructions.

DO NOT USE LMGTFY.com or similar-like web links in your reply. I consider its use very unprofessional for EE experts. If you do, you will not get acknowledged and receive no credit.

NOTE: This is applicable to my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit operating system.

Please reply.

Thank you!

This used to work just fine - but recently we can no longer open an Excel file (.xls) from our in-house web page. Our managers use these XLS files to assign worker tasks, so the worker pulls up a locally hosted webpage then clicks the links to the Excel files.

Server = Windows 2000 Server  (SP4)
Clients =  Win XP sp3   IE8.0  (but also will not work with Mozilla or Chrome)   Some have Microsoft Excel 2003 locally installed, others have Open Office.

If i mouse over the links they are correct.  I have tried changing to a different host folder and server with no luck.  The users ARE able to access the XLS files via a mapped drive within My Computer, but that is not how we want it to work.

This all worked up until about 2-3 weeks ago.   Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I am having trouble getting a visual basic macro to run in LibreOffice Calc (OS is Ubuntu Linux 11.04 running on a typical new Intel x86 machine).  This exact macro runs just fine in OpenOffice with Ubuntu Linux 10.x.  I am looking for language that performs the same function as the below but works in LibreOffice.  The below macro excerpt is contained within a .xls spreadsheet and is written in windows-style visual basic.

    row_val = wb2.Sheets("inputs").Cells(2, 3).value
    col_val = wb2.Sheets("inputs").Cells(2, 4).value

    wb2.Activate
    Sheets("inputs").Select
    Range(Cells(1, col_val + 1), Cells(row_val, col_val + 1)).Select

The macro execution fails on the last line shown above, though execution of this line works just fine when run under OpenOffice.org Calc / Ubuntu 10.x.   The error message received is:

BASIC runtime error.
'1'

Type: com.sun.star.uno.RuntimeException
Message:  unsatisfied query for interface of type
ooo.vba.excel.XWorksheet!

Please suggest alternate language that will accomplish the same range select and will work in LibreOffice.

Thanks

Hi
I have a some data in text files and I need to create a report in OpenOffice Spreadsheets  from this data using CLI, GUI or macro script.
The data files are 10 csv files and 1 text file has formulas.

Also it would be nice to add some decorations like colors of cell and tabs of sheets, different size of fonts and borders.

OS: Ubuntu 10.04

Thank you.

For example,, when I point to this file on my computer for the lookup, it works.  When I email the file to my client, it will not look on their computer for the file.  Can I set it to look in the same folder as the file that they are working on?

This is probably a very simple answer, but I am pulling my hair out trying to figure it out. I am doing a spreadsheet (in OpenOffice) in which I want to calculate the sum of the last 12 months. Every month we will need to add a new row, and I don't want to have to reset the formulas each time.

Now before you all start talking about absolute cell references, I have tried that, and as you add a row, the "absolute" reference stays with the cells originally defined, so despite the new month being added, the formula still reference the old data. Now that makes a certain amount of sense to me, but I need a way of fixing the formula to a specific cell, regardless of any rows of columns that may be added to the rest of the sheet.

Named ranges move as well, so that's no use. At the moment the only thing I can see working is to cut the data and paste it one row down, which as the data set is growing by one row a month, is not a fixed target either.

Any ideas?

Marco.

Okay, this is what I'm trying to do, I want to install OpenOffice 3.3 silently with a batch of other programs included.  I'm trying to add it to my current batch file, but I wrote it seperately at the moment.

This is SUPPOSED to install OpenOffice 3.3, then disable the registration wizard, and also change Writer, Calc, and Impress to default save as Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.  However, after it installs, I cannot open the program.  I get the following error.

OpenOffice.org 3.3 - Fatal Error
The application cannot be started.
A general error occured while accessing your central configuration.

Any suggestions please? :)

In Impress I use callouts to add comments. The text doesn't flow to keep inside the callout box. When I press enter for a newline, write a word and press space, Impress capitalizes the first letter of that line. Is it possible to disable that, and if so, how?

Experts,

Try as I might, I have lost the ability to minimize, maximize and close LibreOffice writer from the titlebar.   It has just gone!

If I open a new Window from the program, the titlebar is back.

However, the first instance of the program fills the entire screen.  Nothing to move it with.

How can I get the titlebar back?

hello experts,

i'm looking to align my style level_2 on my open office document,
the problem as you can see in the picture, attached to my post, is that the text has a constant space between the number, here numbers are "i", "ii", "iii", "iv" and the begining of the text.

i'd like to have same space from the begining of left margin page, indepent if its a "i", "ii", "iii" or a "iv".

thank you in advance for info concerning this matter.

Hi,
I've Converted a Doc to PDF in Java using Open Office.
Below is the command to be run after installing Open Office:

cd "c:\Program Files"
cd "OpenOffice.org <Version>"
cd program
where "<Version>" is the version you installed. Do include the quotation marks shown in the cd commands just listed. Start OpenOffice at the command prompt by typing the following on one line:
soffice -headless -accept="socket,host=127.0.0.1,port=8100;urp;" -nofirststartwizard

Now I'd like to create a service that starts automatically when I restart the server Windows and when I restart the application server tomcat.

Have you any idea?

In Office 2003, there used to be a binder feature where related word documents, excel files, powerpoint presentations could be kept, and I believe there was a way to assign page numbers across the entire binder, regardless of file type.

I have the sense that Binders were eliminated in 2007, but I don't understand what the alternative is.

HELP!

We are presently using a typwriter to create page numbers: yes, I know that's crazy in 2011.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi All,
I am just starting to play around with Open Office as an alternative to Microsoft Office, but I'm getting some errors.

Dim oSM As Object = CreateObject("com.sun.star.ServiceManager")
That line gives me:
An unhandled exception of type 'System.Security.SecurityException' occured in Microsoft.VisualBasic.dll

Attached is sample code that I am trying to use.

...Also if anyone has any opinions on alternatives to Microsoft Office, feel free to share.

Thanks!!
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim oSM As Object = CreateObject("com.sun.star.ServiceManager")
Dim oMM As Object = oSM.createInstance("com.sun.star.frame.Desktop")
        Dim arg(-1) As Object
Dim objCalc As Object = oMM.LoadComponentFromUrl("private:factory/scalc", "_blank", 0, arg)
Dim objSheet As Object = objCalc.Sheets.getByIndex(0)
Dim oCell As Object = objSheet.getCellRangeByName("A1")
        oCell.String = "MyTest"

        Dim lngColor As Long = RGB(255, 125, 50)
        oCell.CellBackColor = lngColor

        objCalc.storetoURL("file:///E:/EETest/vbtest.ods", arg)
        objCalc.Close(False)

    End Sub

I'm looking for pointers to a site/service similar to ShutterFly.com, but one that does not steal your rights to your photographic works.

Specifically, the ToS for ShutterFly says that, for anything uploaded to their site, you (meaning the person using ShutterFly):

....hereby grant us and our designees a worldwide, non-exclusive, sublicenseable (through multiple tiers), assignable, royalty-free, fully paid-up, perpetual, irrevocable right to use, reproduce, distribute (through multiple tiers), create derivative works of, and publicly display and perform (publicly or otherwise) [the pictures you upload]....

I don't mind paying ShutterFly for their services. What I object to is them granting themselves such a license to my work. Basically, the terms of that license destroy any commercial value my photographic works may have.

I'm looking for pointers to other websites/services that are similar to ShutterFly, but which don't steal my pictures for themselves when I'm paying them to print them for me.

One of the columns of a table I am querying contains a listing of identifiers, they are string and contain one numeric. The strings are varying lenghts. The numeric can occur in the 2nd or 3rd position of the string, such as K1AB, LL4A, W1AQ, JJ2QWE, etc.

I am trying to select from the table, one of the columns of my query I want to contain the alpha characters before the numeric, one column to contain the numeric, and the other to contain alphas after the numeric. So using the examples above, I wish to have three columns that contain K 1 AB, LL 4 A, W 1 AQ, JJ 2 QWE.

On my PC, when I use "New Database Query" from Excel 2003, I can make a query with a CSV file (semi-colon delimited).

When I use the same method on an another PC, MS Query can't recognize the semi-colon delimiter.  It sees only  one field.  The regional settings are the same (separator value = semi-colon), the versions of the ODBC driver are the same.  How can I resolve this problem ?

FYI : I have also made a test with an ODBC connection with Open Office Base and I have the same problem. On my PC it's OK and on the other PC not !
