i need two passive finger printing programs.

i've tried p0f, but the results i am getting are not consistent --maybe just wrong ...

i load up p0f, and use the line p0f -f p0f.fp log1.log

then i either use netcat to try and open a connection or a browser to open a connection, but, i get all sorts of results, but not the ip of the target i'm shooting for

i need to identify the target(yahoo, google, microsoft, whatever) operating system through a passive program

so, i dig the domain name or ping the site and retreive an ip address, and then wait for it to populate in p0f, but
i never actually see a packet come back from that site identifying an OS

this is for an ethical hacking class

thanks

I have a customer that I inherited running Red Hat Linux ES 3 that wants to send email from the Linux side.
I need to be able to send email using port 587.

cat /etc/redhat-release
Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3 (Taroon)

The Windows support person says smtp must use port 587.

SMTP: smtp.emailarray.com  Port: 587
Login: info@computerohio.com

/etc/services
smtp            25/tcp          mail
smtp            25/udp          mail
submission      587/tcp         msa             # mail message submission
submission      587/udp         msa             # mail message submission

Since 587 is used by submission can smtp also be changed to 587 in the /etc/services file?

netstat -tanp | grep send | grep LISTEN
tcp        0      0 127.0.0.1:25            0.0.0.0:*    LISTEN      483/sendmail: acce

The Windows support person also says the following:
The Windows server is running DNS, so you may want to change the DNS servers to:
10.10.10.176
8.8.8.8
It should resolve "smtp.emailarray.com" to 69.28.212.198.

cat /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 10.10.10.1
nameserver 68.10.16.25
nameserver 10.10.10.176
nameserver 8.8.8.8

I have a Microsoft DNS environment and Im introducing BIND as secondary servers.

I have added the new BIND servers as Name Servers on one of the Forward and one of the Reverse Lookup Zones on one of the Master Microsoft DNS servers. By doing this the BIND servers should replicate through to all the other Microsoft DNS servers within the environment. I have 20 different Forward Lookup Zones, 15 different Reverse Lookup Zones and 10 different Conditional Forwarders.

My questions are:

1.   Do I need to add the BIND servers to ALL of the 35 zones that I have within the environment? As BIND are secondary servers they should have all the zones as Microsoft DNS servers do, correct?

2.   Do I need to enable Zone transfers on ALL of the 35 zones that I have within the environment or being that I added the servers as Named Servers, the BIND servers will get the zone info for all 35 zones that way?

2a.   If I need to enable Zone transfers on ALL of the 35 zones, should I configure it to go to ALL the Named Servers or just the Master servers that I have listed for BIND to get zone info from?

Thank you in advance!!

7. Highlighting the search using GREP_OPTIONS

As grep prints out lines from the file by the pattern / string you had given, if you wanted it to highlight which part matches the line, then you need to follow the following way.

When you do the following export you will get the highlighting of the matched searches. In the following example, it will highlight all the this when you set the GREP_OPTIONS environment variable as shown below.

$ export GREP_OPTIONS='--color=auto' GREP_COLOR='100;8'

$ grep this demo_file
this line is the 1st lower case line in this file.
Two lines above this line is empty.
And this is the last line.

how to get different color when search match comes?
