Mac OS X is the desktop operating system from Apple Inc., found on Macintosh computers. OS X consists of a Mach/BSD-based kernel, operating system interfaces primarily based on FreeBSD and additional frameworks (written in C, C++ and Objective-C providing user interface and application-level services.

I have a friend who found an old mac in the trash.  It looks like it turns on but its slow as Moe.  So I plan to throw an SSD on there and then purchase an OS for it.  The only question is what operating system do I get?  I'm not a Mac guy so does it matter what I purchase or do you have any suggestions?

Need to create a Mac Based Image Library

I have thousands of photos of all sorts, and need to build an automated search where I can add attributes and pull up images which satisfy my search criteria.

These are not modern photo's of people, so face recognition is not relevant. Photos are of buildings, maps, historical details, and a few faces, but even those are not usually photographs and tend to be paintings.  So, no face rec.

Also, these are my own private images and do not warrant a cloud solution. Privacy and being able to protect my datas is more important to me. BUT, I would consider using an Azure solution, IF I also had total access to my images with no Internet connection. (I do want some exposure to Azure, as a .NET Developer)

What tools exist that are configurable for this?

I need to add as many attributes as I would like. I need the search tool to reconfigure to include a new attribute.

I am a .NET Software Engineer, so a bit of coding would not scare me.

I would not be afraid to use a cloud solution IF I could also be able to ensure I have the ability to run it locally on my MacBook. My images are controversial, and could cause the master of the universe to try and cut my account...

What about a WordPress plug-in? I would host WP on my Mac if required for this.

I am trying to find a tool (or tools) I can use that will save me a world of work.

Thanks.

I am in the throes of trying to secure some of our home users and their Macs.  I really don't know where to start to be honest since I'm not a Mac guy.  What type of firewall does a typical Mac have?  Does it need to be enabled?  Also what are some other security features that a Mac has that I would want to take advantage of?  Do I really need to consider virus protection or is there one by default similar to Windows defender?

I have a couple of Mac users that are on OSx Mojave.  They connect to a Windows 2008R2 server via SMB.  The issue is that when a user renames a file the file disappears,, only to reappear with the new name later if the disconnect and reconnect.  Also, if a user is trying to copy files to a folder, they will not show up, but if the user again tries to copy the same files and folders, they will receive a warning that files with the same names already exist.  Again if they disconnect and reconnect the files appear.  This does not happen all the time, and is kind of random in nature.  Does anybody have any ideas what could be causing this?

Hi - Are there any good options for backup utilities to Clone a drive on Mac OS X, other than Drag & Drop & Time Machine?
I have data on 3 external hard drives, a 4TB, a 5TB, and an 8TB. I also have the New empty 4, 5, & 8 TB to use for backups.
So far I have been plugging into USB3 both drives (Orig & backup) and using drag & drop, but there must be a better way! Especially when the backup fails after 2 days of copying!
I don't want incremental backups like Time Machine uses. I'd like to "Update a Backup" but have it end up as a "clone", not a set of multiple incremental folders.
All are personal drives, nothing 'fancy' (no disk lock, no passwords, etc) and the file systems are all Mac OS X Extended Journaled.
Thanks all in advance!

Finder and deleting old Mac Thunderbird emails

I have deleted a handful of old email accounts in Thunderbird. But, I forgot to always check the checkbox to remove the associated emails.

Now, I am asked to compress the emails, which are ~275 GB.

Is there a way to find these folders and delete them manually?

Thanks

Affinity Photo: How to add and edit ClipArt image to current Affinity document

Attempts to add/edit ClipArt image to current Affinity [1.7.1] document have not been successful. I added a ‘New Layer’ from Layer  menu, then copied ClipArt [CMD-C] from Swift Publisher available Clip Art. Then pasted [CMD-V] on what I thought was new layer.

Following, I was unable to move or edit the ClipArt image from pasted position upper left corner of page,

What I expected [and wanted] to happen was the ability to edit [resize/add text] to the ClipArt ‘Layer’, including relocation of image.

The pasted ClipArt was a clipboard to be used to convey information to the viewer by adding a text box to the Clipboard image.

How do I accomplish this?

Need a secure iPhone/MacBook Password program

I use 1Password, but heard that DropBox files can not be secured. So, even if opening the app on my Mac or my iPhone might feel secure, a hacker could get in.

True?

What is a good alternative?

Security if obviously important.

I guess the only advantage of using 1Password is if I somehow forgot that password, I suppose tech support at 1Password could crack it. But, I assume that means ANYONE at 1Password could crack it.

Suggestions?

Thanks

I have an older Mac that I'm trying to refresh.  I'd like to buy a solid state drive and then install the OS again.  Is it like installing a new hard drive and OS on a PC?  What do I need to do and where do I get the OS?  Can I just keep the license from the previous OS somehow and install again?

I recently replaced Mac mini late 2014 with Mac mini 2018. After some time on a learning curve, I started to import user data from 2014 to 2018 Using Migration Assistant. My goal was to import Apps/Data without duplicating Apps/Data on 2018.

Mac mini 2014 HD is 797.48 available of 1TB, Mac  -  mini 2018 HD is currently 2i3.01 GB available of 250.69 GB.

As I could eliminate some of the data & Apps before Migration (as most Apps are already on 2018 or apparently available at n/c with same Apple ID).

How do I work this job to realize minimum GB migration? Ie. import data only to apps?

Is drive encryption possible on a mac?  If so, what do I need to do to set it  up.  If its not available, do I need a third party software in order to accomplish it and do you have any recommendations?

MacOS Disk Eject Hanging

I did not pull out my hard disk after an overnight backup with Time Machine. But this window popped up and shows the spinning wheel when I cursor over Cancel and Force Eject...

I tried relaunching Finder and can not Restart MacOS, since this hangs.

I hate doing a hard restart of my MacBook.

What are my options?

Thanks

MAC OSX and Exchange connectivity problems.
I have a few OSX clients, newest version having mail connectivity issues.  I host my own exchange 2016 server, and none of my windows users are having this issue.
I have mac is hard wired and the other is using wifi, and both are having issues sending or receiving emails.  Looks like the mac mail client has issues connecting.
I can ping my exchange server just fine from the work station and since my PCs are not having this issue, it leads me to believe it's something with the OS client?
The Exchange server and the macs are on the same network.

When trying to send an email, it just sits  in the outbox until it goes out by itself later.
Or there's an error message stating to select a server.
It's random throughout the day.

If anyone has experienced this before and knows what is causing the issue, I would be so appreciative to figure this out.

I have an old Mac running Quark version 6. The MAC is slowly heading to the grave yard. Some times you have to wait several days before you can boot to a desktop - YEP, it's failing. Unfortunately the company relies on Quark 6 to create business cover pages, and we don't have the original software.

So, I went to Quark and downloaded version QuarkXPress 2018 on a Windows Pro 7. Yep, I'm about to be hit with all types of compatibility, file format night mares. The first problem I got past related to version. I downloaded/executed QuarkXPress Document converter tool. I was successful in bringing old files up to date, yet I received the following error:

Please note that any web or interactive layouts will be removed during conversion!

These layout types are no longer supported in QuarkXPress 10 and later. “New C-4908_9X.qxp” uses fonts not installed in your system.

      Helvetica
      Helvetica 95 Black
      Helvetica Extra Compressed
      Future Book
      B Eurostile Bold
      Futura Condensed

I  was able to open up the files from the MAC PC via Quark. Unfortunately, the format/font was not correct. I need to be able to recreate the same cover pages as I have done in the past. Is there anyway of recreating this environment?

I have done some research, It appears I'M not the only one trying to copy over MAC fonts to a Windows environment. I understand they are written in a different format (DFont). Has anybody had success with this?

MAMP Expires in one week?

I got a message that the full-working demo will expire...

Expiration
What does that mean?

I really do not want to pay $69 for an installation I made as a simple test-bed for WordPress and PowerPress. I plan to host the podcast in a few weeks.

What will I not be able to do once this demo has expired?

Can I simply register?

Thanks

Let me present a scenario.

A small company has 6 mobile users that have 6 laptops spread across the country.  Two of the users use their personal laptops and the others have company issued.  There is no physical location for this company.  Some users have Windows and some have Macs.  They don't have a central server.  The 3rd party applications that they use for their data is Salesforce, dropbox and another one.   They constantly email each other with sensitive items in excel and also use slack to communicate.  The concern is data security and making sure there are no compromising behaviors with a need to utilize best practices.

What are some ideas to make sure data remains safe when emailing one another and sharing information?  Would it be a smart idea to utilize Office 365 in this scenario and keep all documents in One Drive or SharePoint?  Should I consider Enterprise Mobility + Security E3?     Or are there other methods to utilize security considering there are Macs in the picture?

I have a apple laptop running their MAC OS X 10.13.6. For some reason neither shift keys nor caps log is working. Everything else works fine, except that I can't get any form of capitalizing of letters. I'm about to say that I need to take it to an apple store. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Steps I've taken thus far:
1. Rebooted
2. Powered off and left off with battery out for 30 sec.
3. Verified the "Speak selected text when key is pressed" was deselected
4. Verified "Enable Slow Keys" was off
5. Verified "Enable Mouse Keys" was off
6. Verified the correct US keyboard layout was selected
7. Deleted com.apple.keyboardtype.plist

How can I recover a forgotten  password on a Mac Mini?   I have forgotten the master password for the file vault.

Merge 2 old Mac Mini to Current 2018 model.

My plan is to upgrade 2 Mac Mini (Late 2012 & Late 2014) to a single Mac Mini (2018) to take advantage of SSD, More RAM and faster processor. I will then use 3 non 4K monitors (eg: DELL 1907FB)

Moving OSX Mojave Apps (+Data) from Mac #1 to Mac #2. Both are OSX 10.14.5

“Mac apps are great in the sense that they are mostly portable—all you need to migrate an app is drag it from one computer to the other” - Is this true?

[Mac minis are connected with Thunderbolt cable - but System Preferences/Network shows Thunderbolt Bridge not connected .]

I expect the resulting configuration to be considerably faster than current setup which is s-l-o-w, eg. Boot time for Late 2012 model to access Kiwi for Gmail is 4:18 minutes!

Does above plan seem doable?
