Due to my continuing disparity with OS X i am CONSIDERING switching back to windows. I have been on a mac now for the better part of a decade. I do a a lot of Linux sys admin work, light to medium pen testing, basic productivity, etc. I’m not opposed to going with a Linux distort, probably Ubuntu with a KDE de, but it’s not ideal. I do most of my work on a laptop that’s docked with monitors but I am mobile a lot too so I’ll be looking at a high end Lenovo or Dell laptop or an ultrabook and a ballsy desktop. The big questions are with Windows 10, I know anti-virus is still an absolute necessity with anything Windows (BOOO!) I also know Windows 10 transmits the machines public and private keys to MS. Is there a way to prevent that? Aside from that I do most things in terminal, which I know I lose with windows in favor of “command prompt” but I can ssh with putty so im not too lost. Are there any other major issues id have with Windows? Or am I better sticking with OS X in its continued attempts to lock power users out, or bite the bullet and switch to a Linux distro? I need experiences and opinions based on that experience. Thanks guys.
We now have two instances of MACs connecting to a Sonicwall (TZ Series) and getting slow internet performance.  We had Dell support on the Sonicwall and they have given the first unit we were having trouble with a clean bill of health.  However, the customer just couldn't put up with the degraded speed so we put in a cheap Netgear router temporarily and the issue with poor MAC browsing speeds went away.  It doesn't seem to matter whether ethernet connected or wirelessly connected.  Now a second account is complaining of the same scenario....mixed use of Windows and MACs connected to wireless and the MACs experience terrible response times.  any suggestions?
We have an iMac on our AD network (DCs are Windows Server 2012).  Whenever it boots up we get "Network accounts are unavailable."  The mac is joined to our domain.  It pulls an IP address from our DHCP server and registers on DNS.  The hostname is set to the FQDN, we use the Ethernet connection not Wi-Fi, and the date and time set automatically from the NTP server.  What am I missing to get this to work properly?
Hello experts,

I have a fat32 usb drive that says I only have read only permissions to it.  It has all my music on it which was backed up from my pc.  Is there any way, either from terminal or any other way I can adjust the permissions without wiping it?

Thank you, Karen
I plug my disk into my El Capitan MacBook and it starts backing up, with no request for passwords. So, I need to find if I have none assigned OR if there is none.

And if I want to remove the pw from the keychain, how do I do that?

I have in this screenshot a list of installs and beautifulsoup4 is one of them.  But when I try to import it I get an error.  Please help.

I am trying to import into MacPorts html5lib as you can see it is active and you can see the syntax I tried.  Please help me get this imported.

I was using Apple remote Destkop to connect to my XP computer, then the hard drive died on my Apple. I don't recall if I had El Capitan or Yosemite, but now I have El Capitan. I don't know what I am doing wrong but I can't connect to my XP computer. Nothing has changed on my XP computer. In ARD it shows that the XP computer is ready for a connection. When I try to connect I get the following error:

The error I get is:
Connection failed because Remote Login is not enabled on "Windows XP"
Disable the "encrypt all network data" security settings or try enableing Remote Login in the Sharing Preferences on "Windows XP."
see attached picture.

I am using the most recent version of Tight VNC on the XP computer
and the most recent version of Apple Remote Desktop.
Here are my Macbook's specs.
  • Macbook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2012
  • OS X El Capitan
  • Processor 2.3GHz Intel Core i7
  • Memory 16GB
  • 240GB  SSD
  • Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB (Nvidia graphics card too)
  • Disc burning, HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS41N

I have a lot of DVDs that I would like to discard, but I want to copy them first.  Ideally, I would like to copy the DVD to file format MP4 (so it can be used in iTunes Home Sharing via my Apple TV) and I would like to keep the file sizes 2GB and under.

What are my options?

Earlier this year I purchase an iMac computer for my mother who lives out of state.  I am not much of a Mac person - my experience is limited mostly to iPads.  I am going to visit her next week and want to finish setting up her home office and give her training how to use her computer.  She currently does NOT have a printer or fax machine.  I am looking for advice on a single multi-function machine I can get her that would meet these needs, be easy to use with the Mac, and be easy for her to use.  I have a strong preference for laser over inkjet.  I have purchased many Brother MFCs over the years, but am open to other brands.

There are a few complications.  First, my mother lives in an older home that is not wired for cable and has limited phone jacks.  There are two cable outlets downstairs, one of these is used for their Comcast ISP.  Last year I got them set up with UPB devices so she now has high speed internet in her office (that is located upstairs).  She does not, however, have a phone jack in her office.  The multi-function device I want to get her should be sitting on her desk near her iMac.  I live three time zones away.  Ideally, I should be able to send her a fax any time of day or night and it should print out without her needing to do anything.

My first idea is to find out if there is a UPB like solution that will enable me to add a phone jack in her room via the power lines.  Any suggestions?  My concern is that something like this…
I recently created Guest Network [Guest 'Name'] with Apple Airport Extreme Time Machine. The existing local area wireless network ['Name' Network] works OK - connections are fast and stable for 3 iMacs and iDevices.

However, the Guest Network will not connect, as reported by iPhone 6S. The iPhone 6S readily connects to the The ['Name' Network] and signal strength for both ['Name'] networks is 3 "bars" as as reported by iPhone 6S. I waited several minutes for the connection [a few feet from Airport Extreme Base Station], but it never happened.

Airport Utility returns the messages

"WI-FI Self-Assigned IP"
"Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet"

What am I missing to get the connection working? Different/None IP Address?

Will this work?

A address is usually not self assigned. Self assigned would be addresses, which appear if a computer could not complete DHCP. It could mean that the computer is not using DHCP, but is instead set up with a Static IP in this case.
Check to make sure DHCP is enabled by going to System Preferences > Network > select Wi-Fi / Airport > select Advanced. From here, select TCP/IP, and make sure "Configure IPv4" and "Configure IPV6" are set to "Use DHCP" and "Use Automatically" respectively. Then, go to the DNS tab. Clear out any servers you see here by selecting their IP Addresses and clicking the Minus sign.
We coded a website containing listboxes, but on a Mac they don't appear. Is there something in the Mac OS that doesn't show the up and down arrow on list boxes? Is there a way to use CSS or is there a Mac OS setting we can pass along to the client to tell them how to get listbox arrows to appear?
Note: The scrollbar appears, but not the up and down arrow that normally appear on a listbox on PC.
I'm setting up a VPN at my work to route to OSX Server.  I think that I've got the router/everything else properly configured - because when I attempt to login to the VPN I see results popping up in the logs.

One thing I can't do, however, is log in.  I keep getting authentication failures - and in the logs it says:

CHAP peer authentication failed for <username>

I've attempted using variations like username and domain\username format - to no avail.  I was reading somewhere that the VPN user list is different than the normal user list?  Any idea what might be happening?
We have OSX Server running on a Mac Mini over here at the office, and would like to grant employees VPN access to it.  We also have an EDGEMax router.  I know very little about routing beyond the basics - and am having some difficulty getting it running.

Here's the port forwarding/firewall rules I've set up in the router:

Port Forwarding and Firewall Rules
...and I've set up OSX Server per these instructions.

--- but every time I attempt to log in to the server - it either says that the connection failed, authentication failed, or there was some error in the connection negotiation.

Am I missing something?  :)  Thanks in advance!
I have Yosemite and MacPorts installed along with Python on MacPorts.  I need to create a program with Python but it seems all the directions on the internet discuss using Python without MacPorts.  I had to use MacPorts because I couldn't get Python to load outside of MacPorts.  I posted that question yesterday and no one has offered to help so that's why I went the MacPorts route.
I am updating a PDF created with a different (more professional) tool than Adobe Acrobat Pro, which used Lato font. I can not insert a missing word, as a result.

I have a Mac.

What are my options? I need this ASAP.

Hi Guys,
We are going to start using a web application that only runs on IE.
Oddly enough we have around 30 users that use Mac computers.

So I have been tasked with a project to come up with a solution to solve this puzzle.

I have a couple of ideas but I want to hear some from you.

How can I have a user in a Mac running IE?

I ran these commands to install pip - and this is the first time I have done anything with python

    Install easy_install

    curl -o - | sudo python

    Install pip

    sudo easy_install pip

 and got this output

Installing collected packages: regex
Running install for regex ... error

Hi All - I have a folder full of about 10000 files, with a couple of levels of sub-folders.
(If it matters, they happen to be a web folders, copy on my local hard drive of a MAC OS X, websites are live on a Linux/Apache server).

Someone made changes to some of those files, and now I have a copy of that folder with those changes (as well as a copy of the Original folder)

What is the easiest way to do a comparison to see what files have changed between the two folders? (Presumably based on File_Size and Last_Modified_Date)

Note that I do not care what the content of each file is. I just want to know which file(s) were modified.

I just installed Windows 10 on a i5 15" Macbook Pro (2014) running with 16GB of RAM

The disk performance indicator is practically always at 100%

I followed the various recommendations :
- disable system compressed memory
- adjusted Windows for best performance
- disbaled Windows Search
- disabled Superfetch (registry and services) and prefetch : both set to 0 in registry
- disablesd app notifications
- disabled 'Show me tips about Windows"
- set custom memory paging file size : 23040 MB
- Set MSISupported to 0 for StorAHCI.SYS
- Disabled Windows Defender
- Set Write permission for ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES on Skype.exe

The only other thing I can't really manage is Dropbox, which at boot up indexes files - tried pausing the indexing to see if it made any difference : not a great impact
Now that the indexing has stopped and the files are up to date - Disk is at 97% (small impovement !)

Just downloaded Diskmon and executed it, but can't make heads or tails of the data that is streaming uninterruptedly

Any ideas ?
Hi -

My clients have asked whether i can export 30 or so distribution lists setup in Outlook 2010 to Outlook 2011 on the mac.
Importing the pst doesn't seem to show the lists  so is there a compatible bridge between the two? Even a 3rd party app would be acceptable if anyone has working knowledge of one that works.

Our office Macs are various flavors (Yosemite - El Capitan)

Soft reset: Perform this reset if you have forgotten your password.  A soft reset resets your password and disables security settings (Access Control and RADIUS settings are temporarily interrupted). Forgetting the password would normally prevent you from connecting to or configuring the device. If you make no changes within five minutes of doing a soft reset, the device will revert back to its former state. All of the device's settings will be available after it has restarted.

Soft reset: Resets the device password and disables security for five minutes so that you can join the network to make changes.

I want to be sure that if I change Airport Extreme password with above procedure, current users (that is, before reset) when logging on after password reset will be to gain access to their accounts by entering current UserName (that is, before reset) and new password (that is, after reset).

This may seem a trivial question, but I will have *many* upset users if they cannot have full access to all files with current UserName and new password. If it helps, I have an administrative account (that is, before reset) on one of the El Capitan macs.

This comes about because of a personnel change and loss of Airport Extreme login password information. I have Monday of each week with no users in office.

As an added feature, I would like to create a 'Guest' [Internet…
I have a MacBook Pro running El Capitan. Here I run Windows 7 with VMWare Fusion 8.1. There's a small icon at the bottom left of the screen urging me to upgrade to Windows 10. Can I do that while I'm in my virtual Win 7 and not lose all my settings and installed software? Will VMWare Fusion recognize the new virtual OS?
I am new to MAC and have a question about Office for MAC.

I have OS is X EL Capitan 10.11.5 on my work MAC PRO.  I need to Microsoft office.

Is this the product I should get?

Once I get the product key, where do I go and download?

I am new in MAC and have a silly question.

I need to create my own user folder on a Mac Book to save my report.  How do I navigate to the Users folder?
