We recently procured a refurbished (Early 2015) MacBook Air with macOS Sierra 10.12.5 for our client.

They are in a very saturated 2.4Ghz area so we have a 5Ghz network for them with their leased Comcast modem.

However they have an odd issue with the MacBook Air.  The 2.4Ghz works fine on the MacBook Air (yet is slow and saturated which is experienced on other devices) and the 5Ghz performs flawlessly with all the other devices except for this MacBook Air.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  Sometimes it is slow and non-responsive, sometimes it is decent.

This is a new copy of macOS and have tried to delete and re-add the access point and has strong signal and all other devices work great with this 5Ghz network EXCEPT this MacBook.  Thoughts?

The Eight Noble Truths of Backup and Recovery

How can IT departments tackle the challenges of a Big Data world? This white paper provides a roadmap to success and helps companies ensure that all their data is safe and secure, no matter if it resides on-premise with physical or virtual machines or in the cloud.

We have a mixed Mac and PC environment and we are hosting files on a Windows 2016 server. We have Mac OSX computers ranging from 10.6 to 10.12 connecting to the file share on this server. They use Excel 2011 and 2016. Whenever they open an XLSX file on the file server and then try to save the file, a temporary file (on Excel 2011) or temporary folder with FILENAME....RANDOMCHARACTERS (on Excel 2016) gets created and the Excel client sits for a while. Then eventually it comes up with "File rename failed. Retry?"

This doesn't happen with XLS files.

What I've tried so far:
-Gave EVERYONE full permission and ownership of all folders for testing
-Tried mounting the share as CIFS:// instead of SMB:// with the same results
-Turned off auto save features in Excel
-Blocked all Mac hidden directories such as .TemporaryFiles from being created on the server with File Screening on the file server
-Tried only enabling SMB 1 on the file server (which kept all Windows machines from connecting, and no change with Excel)

All Mac computers are bound to active directory and the users are using their own active directory credentials. I did notice that when this temporary shared file/folder is created, if I check the file details on the file server, it shows "Administrators" as the owner of the file. I'm not sure why, as the users are logged in using only their AD credentials and connecting to the SMB share using their registered credentials as well. Does anyone have any ideas on …

I am not able to receive or send email on my imap account.  This is the error message that I get.

Cannot Send Mail
The user name or password for "patmoell@bellsouth.net" is incorrect.

Is the user name "patmoell@bellsouth.net"?

If so, the passwords must be wrong.  What can I do to change the passwords?  I don't know the current passwords.

Here's more information about the servers.

Incoming Mail Server

Host Name  imap.mail.att.net
User Name patmoell@bellsouth.net

Outgoing Mail Server

SMTP  smtp.mail.att.net

Other SMTP Servers

smtp.mail.yahoo.com
outbound.att.net

Since I can't receive email, can you answer this another way?  <email removed>

Thanks.

Hi Guys

I need some help with MAC and Synology NAS.

The data for a user is sitting on a Synology NAS and we have a 3rd party backup software that is being used for backing up the NAS

So the way it works right now (actually it doesn't work properly) is that the folder that is storing data on Synology NAS is mounted on the MAC as AFP volume.

The backup application then backups this volume to the cloud.

But from time to time, the AFP volume drops out and that causes the backup application to think the folder containing data is deleted so next time the AFP volume is back, the application starts backing it up all over again.

The issue is definitely between MAC and the NAS because the user also loses access to the volume.

So here is what we need.

A connection to the folder on the NAS drive from the MAC that is CONSTANTLY on and doesn't drop.

Once we have that, the backup will work fine because the backup IS working fine for a folder that is on MAC's own internal hard drive.

I am open to using NFS if that's better for stable connection compared to AFP. But not SMB because it doesn't work with the backup software.

My Apple mouse moves fine horizontally across my 30" Thunderbird monitor, but I have to lift and move it too much for vertical motion (e.g., to move the pointer from the bottom to the top of the screen). This isn't a problem when I use my Logitech mouse. I've researched online and found virtually nothing about the issue.

I've made every available change to the mouse configuration, including maximum acceleration, but nothing affects helps.

Does anyone know how to resolve this?

HI

I am getting the following error when trying to run gdb on my Mac OS, on an executable.

Unable to find Mach task port for process-id 469: (os/kern) failure (0x5).
(please check gdb is codesigned - see taskgated(8))

I followed the instructions online to get a certificate set up. Then I ran
codesign -fs gdb-cert "$(which gdb)"

Still getting the same error.

As of this AM, I'm unable to upload photos to Facebook, either in the News Feed or via my own page.

When I click in the "posting box" at the top of the News Feed,  the colored background options that usually appear don't; when I click on the nearby photo/video "lozenge" my pictures folder opens, but chosen images don't upload when I click on them.

On my own page, when I click on photo/videos I don't even get my picture folder.

I can do a walkaround by uploading photos via the photo/video album option, but this is cumbersome.

Using Firefox 53.03 in both Mac OS X and Windows 10
Am unable to post pictures in Chrome 59.0.3071.86 in Mac OS X BUT can do so in the same version of Windows 10.

Wha?

I suspect that this is an FB issue about which I can do nothing, but I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks.

Looking to help a friend who uses a mac - I only know windows.

He says it's running really slow.  Where would you start to troubleshoot?

Is there an equivalent task manager to show what's running / what's taking processor power?

How do you tell if the hard drive is full? (is it the same as windows - you don't want the hard drive near full because of temp files /  etc?

How much RAM would you want on a machine these days? What mac would you say is just too old for casual business use these days?  Me, I don't like celerons or any other processors others than i5 or i7 (maybe i3).  Yes, core 2 duos run windows, but sevearl year old windows PCs just crawl with all the patches / updates / etc on a windows machine.  same for a mac?

And for windows, I'd want 8GB+ RAM.  4 would be the lowest I'd deal with.

thoughts?

I am trying to develop a package installer of Sophos 9.6.2 for Mac OS X - and having a bit of a nightmare doing it!

I've followed the latest updated steps for configuring the installer with the server details using the command line CreateUpdatePreconfig which correctly creates the plist needed.  I'm upsing packages to create the package, and using the pre and postinstall scripts as details in the derflounder article (https://derflounder.wordpress.com/2015/06/17/revisiting-sophos-enterprise-anti-virus-for-mac-9-2-x-deployment/) - all goes well until I try to install the package, at which point it gets to about 30% and fails with an "Install Failed" error.  looking through the install.log file I can see "couldn't posix_spawn: error 8" and it fails.  I've tried changing the patchs to the files, recreating the preconfig scripts to add single quotes and quotes roung the password and username as detailed, but still no joy.

Can anyone offer any advice here - any pointers appreciated!

I have a MacBook and the the other person (let's call him B) has a Microsoft. B can download the file from Google Drive and edit the data and graphs. However when B uploads it back onto Google Drive and I download the file, I am no longer able to edit the data. The graphs in the powerpoint returns to me as a picture.

Migrating Your Company's PCs

To keep pace with competitors, businesses must keep employees productive, and that means providing them with the latest technology. This document provides the tips and tricks you need to help you migrate an outdated PC fleet to new desktops, laptops, and tablets.

Its a Mac pro its 1 year old. When you boot it up it goes directly to a white screen then a folder icon with a flashing question mark in it. I did some digging and booted to the disk utility which is where I'm having an issue. When I choose the start up disk that is encrypted I click the unlock and type the password in and the password box goes away but the disk never appears to unlock I let it sit over night like this and no change. When I type the incorrect password in the password prompt just comes back as you would expect with a incorrect password entry. After I enter the correct password if I click unlock again nothing pops up I see a flash of a window but so quick I have no idea what it states.

This machine was upgraded to 10.12

When moving emails from the inbox to cloud based folders I came across a discrepancy in syncing with my iPhone.

In the gmail browser I can see many emails in my inbox which I have filed into folders.

It's as if Mac mail let me move the emails butt didn't update the cloud structure.

A clever soul suggested disabling the account in internet accounts, and re-enabling, no difference.

Have spoken to Apple, no joy.

thanx
db:)

How do I setup, install OpenVPN for MAC OS to my own private VPN server. I am not using any VPN service like TunnelBlik or Viscosity.

I have number of Windows users already setup to access our router which is running as an OpenVPN server.

I need to know where to place my private OpenVPN client configuration files on a MAC OS.  Are the config files the same for Windows and MAC?

Hi,

I am not an Applescripter and I would like some assistance trying to mount my drive without getting the error dialogue box that the drive is not available.

I have a NAS on my network and when I restart the NAS it takes a few minutes for it to be available. During that time I have an AppleScript that tries to run to connect a network shared drive, but when it can't see the NAS it throws an error that I have to click 'ok' on before it will continue to check. My script works fine for mounting but I need help in figuring out how to mount the drive once the NAS is available so I can avoid the error message. Here's some info:

> The NAS is IP address 192.168.2.181.
> The network share I am trying to mount is at 192.168.1.181/fileserver.
> I am using Hazel by Noodlesoft to run this code.

So basically,

If this condition is met
:
if [ -d "/Volumes/fileserver" ]; then exit 1; else exit 0; fi

The go the following:

Here is my script that mounts the drive:

tell application "Finder"
if not (disk "fileserver" exists) then
		mount volume "afp://192.168.2.181/fileserver"
	end if
end tell

Can I do something like ping the network drive to see if it's available and if it is mount? Not sure exactly how to accomplish this.

Any advice?
